I drank this wine several times in the past few years (I was lucky to buy it before the Chinese did, and no, I am not selling it...). I have sold all vintages of overpriced Lafite but kept the 96 and 03. The 1996 to me is the most classic example of Pauillac. Cedar wood, cigar box etc. Light and dense at the same time, never too heavy, never too fruity, never too acidic. You open a bottle with a good friend...wow..., before you know its gone, so drinkable/delicious is this wine. You drink this and say to yourself, why in the world do they make those heavy syrupy wines. No matter how impressive they are after one sip, one sip is enough. The Lafite 96 is the opposite. Just too bad that the current price makes it unaffordable for almost all of us - but that is globalization. 98+

11/24/13, 12:45 PM - Love your review. I bought a single bottle, back in 2003 on WineCommune for $275, and I thought that was expensive. Like you, I sold off all my Lafite except for two bottles (1996 and 1998) during the bubble, but was able to try a bottle as a reference (2002). I am saving these for a very special occasion. I would love to taste a 100 pt Screaming Eagle along side this wine one day.
