2013 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero Nebbiolo
Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting ***
Glass: Gabriel Gold
Decanted about 30min before. Clear, medium, glowing ruby-garnet color. Clean, medium intense and youthful nose with lots of wild strawberries, some floral notes and some fresh roses. Round, soft and nice, but still lacks the complexity of great, ripe Barolo.
On the palate it has everything a great Barolo needs: High, ripe and well-integrated acidity, medium+ ripe, not fully integrated tannin. Very elegant and round, beautiful texture. Lots of wild strawberries, only a hint of oak, some herbs and extract sweetness. Drinks nicely now, very approachable. But for me still far away from the deep complexity of great Baroli. But it has all it takes. Will try my first bottle in about 10+ years time 92-93++

Weingut Keller annual vintage presentation "Kleiner Rhein - großer Wein 1911-1959-2001-2018?" (Weingut Keller, Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Germany): 30-45 year old vines from four different Grand Cru Parcels went into this years von der Fels.
Slightly reductive (like a quarter stick) with just a hint of stone fruit, some vegetal notes and pure crushed stone on the nose.
On the palate a dancer with a such a great balance. Complex and changing constantly. Great, lively acidity. Gets more and more substance in the mouth. Juicy with some tobacco notes. Give it five years to reach it’s peak.

The quality level for such a wine is spectacular and it will over perform a lot of GGs imo. One of the true highlights of the 2018 collection from Keller.

The 2010 Clos St. Jacques is the real deal and another proof why those wines are that rare and expensive. It’s the (nearly) perfect combination of pure elegance, tension, focus but also power combined with an incredible drinkability. Dancing on the red fruit, grapefruit and some herbs back and forth and flowing down the throat like water. A truly great wine and definitely Grand Cru level imo. Nothing more to add.

Keller Open Afterparty (Weingut Keller, Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Germany): This bottle was straight from the cellar of the Weingut so perfect storing conditions. One of the best Kirchspiels I´ve ever had, this was blowing the 04 Koehler-Ruprecht out of the water. Still so fresh, youthful and full of energy but also delivering the Kirchspiel elegance and raciness I also found in the more actual vintages. 04 dry german Rieslings developed in general very good, but Kellers 04s playing on a different level. After the sensational 04 Morstein we had in Hamburg, this Kirchspiel was another proof.

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Crisscross (Private Location): I wasn’t sure if it was the right time to open up this guy but I decided to give it a try. The problem I have with Schäfer-Fröhlichs with some age, that I tasted recently is that they appeared quite ripe without the cut and precision they have when they are young. Also this Frühlingsplätzchen delivers lots of yellow ripe fruit in the beginning which gets better and better with more time in the glass. You then get some herbal notes too.
Quite light and also with a certain kind of sweetness (I’m not sure if this comes from a higher residual sugar or if the fruit is so ripe when Tim Fröhlich harvests and you just feel the wine is sweet but in reality it isn’t.) on the palate which turns into more & more minerality after some time. Also the elegance factor went up. I’m pretty sure, that this Frühlingsplätzchen just needs patience as all the Schäfer-Fröhlichs at a “midterm” status. Give it another five better ten years.

I don’t think this is yet a 97pt wine (per Vinous) but it’s got the stuffing for greatness. Young. Young. Young. Even after dbl decant, 6 hours slow ox, 1 hour wide decant. Others have called this period the “dumb phase” for this wine. I generally agree. Still a lot of fun. It’s like an energetic, boisterous Italian Pinot.

Asperg Wine Syndrome Tasting Group: Crisscross Part II (Private Location): AP 09 or Cask #09. I´m not very experienced with the older Haag off-dry bottlings but this 1997 Auslese Goldkapsel was nothing more then an amazing wine in every sense of the word. The whole wine is absolutely inherently consistent. Everything is on the right place. Tom said: "Like a very, very beautiful woman without any make-up." And what impressed me most was, although you can feel the ripe components, the wine stays super fresh. The nose is a mix of candied lemon, peach, a bit of strawberry and candied orange peel mixed with cassis, pine needles, tons of green herbs and a hint of mint.
The acidity level and the extract are in perfect harmony on the palate. Very long, slightly creamy (the only indication point for the GK level) and floating down like silk. An incredible showing and one of the best off-dry wines I had all year. And still in a very young stadium. Another two decades when stored properly? No problem at all.

A Study of Falletto di Serralunga (La Pizza Fresca): It’s amazing as I look back on my notes to realize that I rated the ‘04 Falletto over the Riserva--but that’s exactly what happened. The theme of the vineyard, vintage and winemaker rang true between both bottles. Here I found a dark and rich display of black cherry, sweet herbs, crushed stone minerality and forest floor. On the palate, soft textures gave way to zesty black cherry and spice with crystalline tannic structure and sweet inner floral tones. Perfect balance and good racyness. A lot of minerality coming from the slate.

But after a few minutes in the glass the pear turns into quince and honey. Stays firm as long an it is cold but if it turns a few degrees warmer it gets wider and a bit botritys turns out.

Not really disappointed but a little bit. Any other vintage is stronger (expect 2012)

Best bottle - X-Mas Edition (Restaurant 5, Stuttgart): Glass: Zalto Bordeaux
Not decanted, from perfect bottle. Clean, medium intense nose that need time to open up. Unfortunately we did not decant it, so it could not show its full potential and I could only estimate its true greatness: Very elegant, fine tobacco, pencil shavings, cassis, spices, cedar wood and almost not brett/animal notes.
On the palate an amazing experience: The often cited “Boxer with velvet gloves” matches perfectly: Elegance meets pressure and tension! High, perfectly fine and silky tannin, lots of dark and red fruit, combined with wonderful spices, pencil shavings and mineral notes. Masculine, without being raw. Very long, lingering finish. Yet another brilliant vintage of the wine that brought well-deserved fame and glory to star wine-maker Klaus-Peter Keller and his team. The 2016 von der Fels is of course still a baby but what a baby it is! The nose reveals profound citrus zest, a whiff of elegant minerals, crisp and lovely elderflower and last but not least classy orange zest. The intriguing part is the complexity found in this wine which perhaps even makes the nose worth dying for when the baby fat is gone? The palate adds to the first impressions in a stunning way and everything plays along in a harmonious way. Texture and structure promise a lot for the future. This wine is in it for the longer haul and also for future greatness. It will continue to develop nicely for a number of years - I am totally convinced. Classic Prum WS Spatlese with green apples tossing in aromas, flavors and acidity mixed with excellent minerality. Light and delicate yet rich at the same time - very Prum like with mild sweetness. Based on this bottle the wine seems to be at peak but did the troublesome cork contribute to this? Hard to say how long this one will remain at it's currently wonderful drinking plateau. Lots of acid. Fresh fruit. Citrus and tropics. Decent length. Some minerality.

2014 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Großes Gewächs Nahe
To be fair, I liked this more than JR did. But neither of us liked it enough to finish the bottle. The yeasty smell was overpowering. JR said it was like unwrapping a fresh cake of yeast and burying your nose in it. i found it less so than he did, and less on the palate than the nose. There was definitely a fine wine going on as well - huge and complex, with great persistence and an enormously long finish, tons of citrus, nice minerality. It was just sadly dominated by this element that smelled mostly like yeast and somewhat like the liquid that tinned hot dogs sit in <shudder>. We put a stopper in and will revisit tomorrow. I've never had a SF GG so young before, so maybe this is part of the usual evolution, and reflects that "sponti" thing that people talk about? Or perhaps even the short drive from the store where we picked is up to our place was enough to shock it? All I know is it didn't smell or taste very good tonight, even after a good amount of air. I'm certainly not ready to dismiss it and hope it will improve, as I have several more.

Addition for Day 2: Bottle was stoppered and in the fridge overnight, then warmed up a bit to around cellar temp. Stopper came out with a decided "pop" so there was some gas build-up for sure. On the nose, not much of an improvement. Still yeasty and unpleasant. In the mouth it was better, with fruit coming a out and showing some texture and depth. Sadly, though, it was still just not fun or interesting to drink. Will put the others away for a few years. I've loved all the other vintages I've had of this wine, so hoping it's just in a bad place.

Similar to previous bottle 3 months ago, this wine seems to be lacking acidity. Fairly light and short finish too. Hmmmm....one of the weaker producer of '15 vintage, surprisingly given the reputation of the producer! Again this shows better on the 2nd day, a lot more vibrant but still does not have the length and structure of some other '15 Kabinetts.

2013 Schiefer Blaufränkisch Eisenberg
Opened this bottle on Sunday for a tasting. PnP. First impression: simple Blaufränkisch with rough edges. Some guests said, that the nose remind them of a North Sea breeze… Fortunately I did not have the heart to poor the bottle down the sink and took it home and let it stay there in my guest room for five days. Today I tried it again as a pairing of spicy lamb filet:
Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
Clear, deep, intense purple color with violet reflexes. Almost black. Nose have transformed and opened up: Clean, medium (+) intense, youthful-developing with a complex and very nice combination of soil, herbs, crushed cherries, smoke, pepper and saltiness (the rest of the sea breeze…). Cool!
And on the palate the wine have completely changed an opened up: Dry, medium+/high acidity, perfectly integrated that makes this wine wonderfully easy and joyful to drink. Medium+ tannin that is on a very good way, not yet perfectly blended in and still a bit rough, but giving the wine a solid backbone. With only 12,5% abv thankfully not a alcohol bomb. Beautiful flavors of cherries, plum, highlighted by notes of soil, licorice, violets and herbs. Medium+ finish. Very good balance and tension, the high acidity makes this wine very vibrant.
If you drink this wine now, give it lots of air or open it in the morning and decant. Otherwise let it sleep in your cellar for a couple more years, you will be rewarded. Very nice wine, good PQR.

A wine produced biodynamically and spontaneous fermentation. Matured in large & small wooden barrels.
Notes of blueberry, wild cherry, leather and wild herbs on the nose.
Fresh, clean and silky fruit driven palate with notes of cherry, red currant and a bit of salt at the end. Lovely sweet-sour taste. Good acidity.
Would perfectly match with some lamb or a dish with poultry. Great price-performance ratio!

2011 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling “Diabas” Mosel Saar Ruwer
Glass: Riedel Vinum Riesling & Schott Zwiesel Burgundy
Drunk over two days.
Clear, youthful pale lemon-golden color. Clean, medium intense, youthful-developing nose. Very lean, precise, fresh and elegant with aromas of lemon fruits, associations of “dark” slate came into my mind, gooseberry, nettles, and herbs. Very nice.
This wine is “dryish“, somewhere between off-dry and dry. Unexpectedly medium+, well integrated acidity, medium- alcohol (11,5% abv). This wine needs your full attention! Simply swallowed it is just a mediocre-good Riesling. It is not loud or driven by its fruit, but its minerality and phenolic components. Given it time on the palate, swirling it, than it reveals its real beauty. Very precise, lean, perfectly structured, shy, but with enormous tension and pressure on the palate. Juicy grapefruit, herbs, wet stones. Complex and quite long and lingering finish. Certainly just a teen and I am really looking forward to taste it again in a few years. Has a long life ahead.

In advance: a fantastic wine. The nose smells like a bag full of fresh peppers of different varieties (also green pepper). It has a opulent intensity. It could originate from Ermitage or Cote Rotie. Also show up -for me undefinable- but fine spices with a minimal touch of strawberry in the nose. On the palate, this massively intense wine shows an incomprehensible length with deep fruit (red forest berries). The pepper does not leave us - typical for the Syrah grapes.
It tastes like an essence of a wine. Great!

Btw. Nördliche Rhone kann ganz vorzüglich altern. :)

This the first 2015 Keller GG we've opened, after having spent a great deal of time and effort (not to mention a few shekels) securing quantities what's been released thus far from KP. Fortunately, with the Hubacker and Kirchspiel at least, we feel we have enough to taste a few young. Hubacker has always been, in my opinion, the vineyard he struggles with the most. My understanding is that soil differences from the other GG vineyards can lead to the Hubacker often being too broad, undefined and a bit flabby, not just in message, but in feel, without the mind-blowing precision and clarity of the other GGs. This bottle though, suffered none of those issues. It was by far the best Hubacker I've ever had - and I've had them back to '02. It was truly dynamite all around. The nose was almost delicate, pure and haunting, with white peach notes dominating, plumed with white flowers and hints of citrus. Then in the mouth, it was taught (which is not in this case a euphemism for "restrained"), elegant, complex, dancing a Seven Veils of revelation on the tongue. The broad lychee fruit I often get from Hubacker was still present, but much more restrained and blended in with the stony peach and grapefruit skin, which I normally don't get from Hubacker. Acid is spot on, giving a sprightliness in the mouth which absolutely delighted me, and with crystalline minerality. The finish lingered without really fading, just getting quieter and quieter so I almost couldn't tell when it finally stopped. It was sensational. A joy to drink. I know Hubacker has been improving in recent vintages, and I am not foolish enough to think "this is what Hubacker is now!" The vintage is clearly lifting the wine and giving the material a real helping hand. I know I don't really care why it's so good, I'm just grateful to be able to drink it.

2011 Martin Müllen Trarbacher Hühnerberg Riesling Kabinett * Trocken Mosel Saar Ruwer
Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
Drunk over 5 days.
Clear, youthful pale lemon-golden color. I must admit I really love Müllens wines when tasted at the winery, but when drunk at home I often don’t feel comfortable with them. They often lack the complexity and depth I admired at the winery.
Same with this one from his top vineyard. It was quite thin and boring after opening. But after 3 days it started to open up and it was really great on day 5: Clean, medium youthful-developing nose with lots of grapefruit, citrus fruits, nettles, gooseberry and all infused with slate. Very good!
It is off-dry, not too sweet, medium acidity, medium- alcohol (11%) and body. Wonderful complex and medium intense aromas of herbs, nettles, white and yellow stone fruits. Very elegant, laser sharp and focused with vibrant tension that continues until the long finish. Perfect example of a Mosel Riesling Kabinett. It still starts its drinking window and will continue to develop for several more years. Very good PQR.

Blind tasting of a number of Grosse Gewächse. A fantastic bouquet containing a kaleidoscope of aromas! Bouillabaisse with lots of seashells as a basic ingredient, steel minerality, pineapples, apricots, peaches, sea buckthorns, moss, lactic notes and a little rubber. A multilayered wine with crisp acid that grants a great flow and a superb balance to match it. Ripe stonefruits, yellow fruits, salty minerality, shell limestone and candied lemon zest are the flavors I get on the palate. The wines prances over my tongue, as if it was a catwalk. Enormously long aftertaste. This will even get better with more time. 96+

Enorm langer Nachhall. Wird mit zunehmender Flaschenreife zulegen. 96+
