Half bottle--rich and dense and luxurious. A little bit overdone in my opinion. I had it next to the 2019 Sonoma-Cutrer Sonoma Coast and I liked that better, more simple and elegant (and cheaper).

Solid, plush with good depth and length. Lot of minerality, lemon, grapefruit, and verbena

Much better the second time. Think this just either aged better or there was just enough variance to make it special...feminine and elegant, medium bodied and long...sour cherry with plum and blackberry...soft and luscious...shorter finish.

Received this bottle as a gift and opened it on new years eve at 12am.

Similar tasting note as in 2019 and 2020:

"Intense bubbles, almond bitters, sour apple freshness and yeasty dough. Easy to drink.
Liked it better than in 2010 but given the price, I prefer Bollinger/Roederer (~40€) or Feuillatte/Piper Heidsieck (~20-25€)."

Just a great exquisite wine with the right amount of structural complexity and elegance. Worth way more than it’s price point. Super drinkable with nice dark cherry fruit in the front third of the palate. If you had to ding this wine, the flavor profile favors California, but the French side anchors it down
  • richshoes commented:

11/26/20, 11:21 PM - Sweet...no idea when it peaks...maybe on the earlier side given how drinkable it is now

Six from Safeway (Private home in Arlington, Virginia): Of the six Safeway specials, I was expecting more from this bottle, as 2014 was a fine vintage for Rioja. But the wine came across as rather boring and lacking in expression. Some redcurrant, some ripe black fruit, as well, but as if they were in first gear and not even in third gear. I like subtle wines, but this was hiding somewhere in the backyard. It was furthermore a tad dilute on the palate, as if coming from excessively high yields. Not sure.
  • richshoes commented:

10/24/20, 1:27 AM - I totally agree! Got mine at Safeway too (Andronico's)

PnP, sweet plum, cherry, violet and rose notes with a dry finish. A nice merlot, just wish I had a nice NY strip to go with it, solid effort.
  • richshoes commented:

6/20/20, 12:48 AM - I had a NY dry aged strip with it and it paired well!

Super exquisite in terms of its refined structure...lot of dark fruit and squid ink...but I still miss these Mondavis from the 90s that were more mossy and had more terroir!
  • richshoes commented:

5/22/20, 11:36 AM - Yeah the newer ones have too much sweet fruit and vanilla. Did a vertical as well a couple years ago of 1996 through 2003...also Vine Hill Ranch is a hidden gem

A little disappointing. Might be more a 91. Good intense, dense condensed structure but soft given the age—so nice tension there.

However, structure not overly complex, elegant nor multi dimensional. Would say the same about the palate and flavor profile.

Some hints of Italian fruit but dominated by dark fruit and dark earth, Bordeaux accents/terroir, dark plum and raisins/prunes

4/25/20, 12:20 AM - Sorry I never responded. I wish CT notified us when there was a comment or question, as I rarely go back and check my postings...I probably didn't decant too much. I tend to be a pop and pour guy, which probably hinders my full experience often. Think all the Valdicavas do better with decanting...but there is great variability I am discovering in different vintages...and finding that I tend to like Bolgheri more as a region

Very tannic, mouthfeel a bit thin - not as plush as I expected. Flavors seem to be there, but a little disjointed. A little hot on the finish. Try again next year. Should have decanted this one.

usually disappointed in Montelena Estate because I open it too early and it's super undrinkable....have learned to wait as the older it is the better it gets! this one was pretty good, but not mind blowing...good sweet cherry fruit with some background of dark fruit....good layers but not as big and complex as I would have thought...probably just a tad young but ready to drink and will hit prime in next 2-3 years
  • richshoes commented:

7/17/19, 10:41 PM - I totally agree with the comments. I have never been patient enough to wait but the one time I was with a 1998, it was well worth it! Much softer, herbal with mushrooms and amazing....

had all the hallmarks of what makes insignia great--right amount of sweet fruit, silky smooth elegant...but a little bit uninspiring for me. I miss the older vintage Insignias...maybe a little too much fruit and not enough terroir. thought the regular phelps I had recently was more impressive...

a little disappointing...had moments of bordeaux greatness, but a little inconsistent, sometimes tight...stemware mattered quite a bit...I probably should have aerated it more.

A lush, though a bit shallow, modern Cabernet that could use another year or so. Dark purple in color, full in body, nose of black cherry and licorice. Tastes of blueberry, milk chocolate, and cedar, with a nice though brief finish. 14.8% alcohol. Blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot. Despite having fruit in spades, this lacks depth in the mid-palate, which is a bit frustrating at this price point. It has some structure to improve with time, but I doubt it will ever be great.

barely makes 90...lot of character, but maybe a little bit past its prime...fruit is dying, port flavors starting to show up...still good body and layers of subtle complexity. interesting and intellectual stimulating, but not as yummy as I would have wanted.
  • richshoes commented:

4/29/17, 11:42 AM - it was a gift from someone who went wine tasting in tuscany...so presumably from the winery...yeah, not sure why it was so disappointing

Had with dinner at the Four Seasons in Las Vegas, prior to attending the Grand Tour wine tasting. It's a solid wine, but its memory was dwarfed by the wines I sampled at the tasting event.

We had this wine with David, Mark and Ann. A dinner of mixed grill. I was disappointed that it did not seem to hold its character. It was lighter than I expected for a Beringer Cab - fruit was restrained, finish not very long.

was blown away by the first third of the bottle...for $44, it tasted like a $100-150 bottle, layers of extreme elegance with some bordeaux smokiness/leather, just totally refined (97-98)...but as the wine changed, the bordeaux smokiness became more bothersome and less integrated into the wine, and the changing wine became more harsh, flabby, and less integrated, too acidic at the back end (92-93)...so I'm taking the average, but really good value for how big and elegant the wine is overall.
  • richshoes commented:

2/2/14, 11:52 PM - had it over three days...but didn't decant. didn't seem to need it, but it got less interesting the longer it was open. the first 2 glasses were amazing though...

pretty amazing wine, especially for the price point. not as refined and grassy/mildewy as the mondavi reserves...but a big wine with a grand structure--sort of in the same vein as stag's leap cask 23, fay, or slv...like it as much anything i've had from mondavi!!! great value and something that tastes like it should be at least $100!!!
  • richshoes commented:

1/29/13, 10:09 PM - a lot of graphite, some hints of vanilla...brick...a stags leap district feel, for sure
