In need of some air upon opening...the bubbles come shooting out...can't contain all that energy! Still spot on from my last note...as the pop rock explosion of bubbles calms, you get an amazingly primal and youthful, raw state Champagne...bursting with citrus energy, yet creamy and sensual in texture. The fruit...candied pineapple, red delicious, dried apple rings...is bright and full flavored...pillow soft ginger mousse caresses the citrus pucker...nuanced yeasty brioche, crushed limestone chalk...just a super balanced mouthful of goodness! LOVE these wines!

One hour slow ox. Deep brick red color. Mushroom, rum cake, black cherry, and cassis on the nose. Smooth, dry palate, with good acidity. Firm tannins on the long finish.

This has aged very well and has lots of life left. It’s clearly very well made. With that said, it’s too tertiary for my palate (i.e. not my style).

opened for 30 minutes, served at cellar temp. Orange/salmon color. Big grapefruit and blood orange nose. The blood orange note hangs on the tongue too, along with some golden apple and a little slightly baked grapefruit (only a little bitter). Nice citrus finish, but the blood orange lingers on the back. Really pleasant

Simply splendid at 21 years since vintage. Vibrant red color. Dark fruited, aromatic nose, blackberries, cherries. Still intense fruit but with genuine elegance. Blackberries, blueberries, cherries, anise. Fine tannins, perfectly poised acidity, great balance. Finishes long, dark fruited and spicy. This could continue to develop for another 3 to 5 years and drink well long after that. Food brings out the cherry notes. 14.8% ABV but no heat at all. The bottle indicates 100% Syrah but I’ve been told there is a small portion of Mourvèdre blended in.

Opened two hours before my Riesling tasting. Was in the third flight and showed incredibly well despite my crumbled cork. WOTY so far as this had everything I want in an Auslese, very good acid, not cloying at all but still pure fruit that was almost electric. Easily see it going for a couple more decades. Outstanding!

One of the plushes textured red wines I've ever had! Simply gorgeous wild berry fruits...fresh and vibrant with tarted crancherry, raspberry puree, cherry skin...deep earth tones and tar...dried orange/roses...tilled herb garden...white pepper/potpourri spice. The finish is SO smoooth and silky, yet there is a good grip of minerality and acidity for a firm spine...totally crushable...totally Chianti! Love this one!

Had an eruption as I slowly uncorked...lost a good quarter glass! ;-( Brilliant yellow metallic gold, green tinge color...refreshing yellow apple, tart skin, lemon ginger cookie, limestone chalk dust, smoky lees nose. Absolutely FIRE first sip! Plush and elegant right out the gate...pillow soft lemon chiffon mousse coats the ripe orchard fruits and precise citrus acidity...crushed rocks, salty minerality...with the age bringing on some dried honey and leesy brioche...pretty nuances of white flower florals and vanilla bean...a sophisticated and contemplating calm as you sip and savoy every drop! Magical stuff!

My first 2018 Chenin Blanc from Sandlands (not sure how I was so patient to leave one of these until now). Typical of this project, the ABV is very modest at 12%. Popped and poured; consumed over two days with consistent experiences both nights. Pale straw color in the glass. On the nose, soft white flowers, slightly underripe pear, honeysuckle and lime. Just the slightest touch wooly. On the palate, it’s pear, lime and chamomile. Acid is high but not bracing. Nice, almost creamy finish. Overall, this is balanced and technically very good, straight down the line Chenin Blanc and paired amazingly well with bacon wrapped scallops. Yet, I just wasn’t as excited about this effort compared to previous vintages. The fruit for this bottle was sourced from their estate vineyard in the Mokelumne River AVA which is a relatively recent addition within the larger Lodi AVA. I sort of get the sense that the best is yet to come from these vines. Still, very tasty and technically excellent.

My first EP Trebbiano...VERY dark amber looking color? Is this shot? If it was a Burgundy, down the drain. It doesn't smell poxed though...but does have a baked apple pie, hot cider nose, fresh squeeze citrus, soaked wood chips. Pretty subdued nose though? Palate is rich and a little edgy...harsh citric acid burn, especially on the finish? Some walnut oil...crushed minerals...burnt sugar...I'm going to let this sit and come back to it. After an hour, not any better. I've only had a 2013 Valentini Trebbiano last summer, which blew me away...BRIGHT yellow color...bursting with energy and brightness? Going by that wine...this has to be FLAWED! Shame...my first bad experience with an EP wine.

This wine was terrible. No flaw apparent. Just so much dill and vanilla from American oak and horrible tannic and unbalanced on the palate. Undrinkable. Nobody among the 12 people at the event wanted it, and they wouldn't even let me use it as a sauce the next day. Past its prime and way over-oaked.

First full bottle after having the 375 in Oct...2012 base, with reserves to 1996. Bright and electric right now...lemon and ginger tantalize the palate with pucker and fine popping bubbles...then a creamy ginger, honey butter, and marsala mousse calms the party in the mouth, and the contemplation begins. Pure golden fruits, chiseled saline minerality, subtle ox, deeply nuanced, richness yet elegance, and in ready to go form! Again...does remind me of the 08 DP in that how well it is showing right out the gate. Always fantastic...but this one seems right up there at this stage with the 164. Gunna need a bigger boat on this one!

For some wines younger is better and this is one. Bright, clean, bold and fresh. The Roussane (40%) dominates the Chardonnay (44%), there’s plenty of that oily iodine note. The Petit Manseng (8%) and Viognier (8%) add to the exoticism. It’s a bit of a shock on first sip but after a while you get accustomed to it and grow to like it more. Still, it’s better as an occasional change of scenery than a daily tipple.

This wine is CRAZY...and I love it! I don't know if this is normal, but the clear glass bottle is completely stained in bright red juice all the way to the top! My first thought was an adult Welch's Grape juice! Not as dark, more red berry fruits...but has that initial freshly pressed, intense sweet(perceived) fruit, glass staining grapiness. But then you taste it...and OH is it so much more! Really bright fresh crushed berry fruits...raspberry, cherry, plum, strawberry, rhubarb...and yes, I get the beet thing! Beet salad comes to mind...totally savory and not too sweet at all. Smooth and quite lovely mouthfeel...sneaky dusty tannins, and mead like spices. Add some pretty florals, very slight whole cluster stem funk...COOL rusticity...I can picture the juices oozing between Larry's toes! I'm drinking this at cellar temp, but I can see this chilled and drunk like a more substantial Rose'! This is some FUN stuff!

Outstanding grand cru chablis with great citrus, stone fruit with overlay of creamy texture. Good complexity and long finish. As noted by other tasters, DO NOT drink TOO cold, rather much closer to cellar temp than fridge temp. Creamy lemon custard, well balanced sweetness against high acidity; lemon and grapefruit give way to peaches with very dry persistent finish. Drinking well now, but will develop further. Sorry I don’t have more.

This is one of those pretty, lighter bodied, cool climate Pinots that gives you SO much more than its appearance suggests. Bright cherry, raspberry, red plum fruits that are snappy and tart, fully ripe, yet with a dried savoriness to it. Wonderful potpourri of spices and florals...some intense pepper like...tight structured minerality...and a deep darker spice/smoke/stem funk that's more of a subtlety and very intriguing. All in a plush frame, a soft 12.4 abv. with great transparency and sneaky depth. Super wine...especially at half off pricing!

Manresa (Los Gatos, Ca.): Had the 88 earlier in the day, which was amazing...but blown away by this 05! The most amazing liqueured red berry fruits, exotic potpourri of spices(Vosne spice and red Chambolle perfume)...SO silky smooth and elegant, yet with a sneaky powerful youthfulness that will continue to help this age effortlessly. Deep and mesmorizing flavors of red licorice, exotic smoked woods, dusty white pepper, charcuterie...all balanced and plush to perfection. I have to have some of this in the cellar!
  • Mrbuzz commented:

Beautifully concentrated, yet with a lightness and tingle of acidity, to go along with the petrol and perceived sweetness, that's totally dry. Not as massively exotic as the 09...nice array of nectarine and peach, green tea, smoked herbs, citrus oils. Fresh acidity that seems a little mellow, yet still possessing great balance and tasty Riesling flavors. Not the epiphany as the 09 was for me though. EDIT..this was the 2013.

I've had a few of the Dujac Monts-Luisants Blanc…but never the Bourgogne. Very little of this is made, maybe 3 barrels….and someone noted the fruit comes from the Poisots climate in MsD…but I couldn't find that? Anyone know for sure?? This is a big white…rich in minerals…little sulfur stank out of the gate…match strike…ripe melon, peach, baked apple, lemon, crushed minerals on the nose…..that palate is oily rich, but not too so, just noticeable…..the fruit is white peach, apple, pear, lemon….great intensity of chalky minerals, savory…..plenty of lemon citrus to liven…pretty florals of white flowers, lemon grass, honeycomb wax. Kind of reminds me of a Carillon Les Perrières, Leroy Aligote blend?? Very fun and tasty stuff here!

One of my all-time favorite Heitz wines...never has disappointed, and continues to show its immortality. Total cork failure though...funny, as I was just telling a friend how great Heitz corks are...so of course this one crumbled in the bottle. Well...didn't affect the wine at all, except for some cork bits. Dark as a barrel sample...plum, black cherry, currants, blackberry fruits...wonderful dusty old cellar/cedar spice, dried herbs, graphite powder. Silky smooth on the palate, yet plenty of structure for future age...in fact you can totally tell there is reserve in everything, holding a little back for that one day it really takes off! Aged nuances of leather, walnut oil, beef bouillon, rich compost round out this perfectly balanced beauty! Great wine, with a lot of great memories attached to it. Always going to be a lifetime wine for me.

Dark wild berry fruit, Kirsch liqueur, dusty cocoa bean/white pepper spice, lilac florals. This is intense and dripping with flavor....pretty spicy and with a good dose of dried wood to it(which I love!). The fruit is creamy, not at all too sweet, but fresh crushed and pureed. Wonderful subtle complexities of smoked cherries in chocolate, tobacco leaves, red velvet cake. Another killer SQN....plenty of room to age gracefully. +pts

2004 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montmains Chardonnay
Chablis, Melville Clonal Blending and The Round 3 Let 'Er Rip (My House In The South OC): Full of sea shell, mineral and a long and intense finish, supported by some green apple, too. Very nice.

For a while in the 90's, Souverain was my go to wine for world class price value. '90, '91 and '94 were all outstanding and then some dark side event occurred (as happened so often in California during this period) and they lost their footing. This is the last bottle of '94 I have and I think I paid $9.99 or $10.99. I kept it more for the memories than because I harbored any illusions of its drinkability in 2010. Mostly well stored for about 13 years.

Retains a nice ruby red with some bricking. On the nose, there's coffee, tobacco, blackberry and dusty minerals. Maybe a little alcohol peeking through, but hey, I'm not complaining. The mouthfeel and texture are terrific for a wine of this modest upbringing, soft, smooth with curves in the right places. The fruit lingers, but it evokes in me a certain sadness, like goldengrove unleaving. I have one bottle of the '91 Souverain left, which I think was $7.99. I can't wait to spring it on a friend in the near future.

5/8/10, 8:34 PM - Thanks for the note! I too, had the Souverain as a goto wine in the early '90's......and the Winemakers Reserves, especially the '92, were World class stuff imo! My last '94 was killer....and I managed to get a bunch of the '91 for next to nothing.....it is still drinking well btw(see my ct note). Great wines....still. The Reserves are a big step up though.

Less musty, more mushroomy compared to the last bottle. Highly perfumed raspberry, a little roasted nut, dusty earth and autumn leaf. Delicate mouthfeel with cool red fruits. Moderate length with cumin, mushroom and baking spice.

4/14/10, 5:47 PM - Drinking one right now as well! Agree on the perfumed raspberry and autumn leaf....I really like the smooth balance and tasty sweet, and still quite fresh, crushed berry fruit. Great spice as well......92pts in my book.
