Last of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, as previous bottle, clean but slightly heightened colour, much broader, almost too fat (what happened to the angular acidity present in most bottles), drink up! VGI (17).

Chez W, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, amazingly little changed from my Feb 15 note, truly aristocratic and with a long life and readily identifiable blind as Latour, just a little 4-square by comparison with the sensational and young Lafite 96 on same night which also showed just a touch more complexity. Both have the scope to gain near perfect marks when fully mature and continue developing beyond 50 years. Currently VF (18.5).

Chez W, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - classic dark but not over deep garnet, leggy and with nearly purple rim; cassis, plum, cedar, tobacco, etc. but above all very complex, cool and classical but with generosity of top vintage; med/full, very long, even more persistent, concentrated and powerful, grippy, expansion and nuance in mouth if not quite a fantail yet, some chocolate, silk if not velvet, barely ready. Scope to improve on VF+ (19)…..pipped slightly less complex Latour 96 on same night

2/21/2020 - liber Likes this wine:

Chez W, decanted an hour, initially opened previous day when ugly and nearly sinked as showing too much incipient POX which seemed largely to have blown off a day later, still tad dark and lumpy, but good underlying style if with weight and burliness more of Batard than Chevalier and with none of the focus, tension and purity of Niellon's wines of the 80s and 90s! F (17.5) though and with scope to develop further ( hopefully to slim down and focus) if POX doesn't get it first.

Chez W, decanted 20 minutes, very translucent dark garnet, red fruit driven with some earth, spice and meat, medium bodied with decent length and persistence, quite lacy, attractive sour tinge to more back fruit on palate, stylistically closer to Freddy Mugnier Marechale than Gouges, drinking nicely with decent life ahead for an 06. F (17.5).

Chez W, decanted an hour, translucent dark garnet, leggy; more to it and purer but as yet perhaps less complex than excellent Mugneret-Gibourg on same night, usual unforced laid back Rousseau style which I admire so much, will make interesting comparison with Roumier as well in 10 years when wines perhaps fully mature. Certainly VF (18.5).

Chez W, decanted an hour, dark translucent garnet, leggy; cherry, plum some cola and balsamic, quite complex; medium, long, very persistent, quite concentrated, complex, more polished and extracted (but not over) than purer Rousseau on same night, youthful but very attractive, years of life. VF (18.5).

Chez W, decanted an hour, pale but bright and leggy, slightly waxy, complex nose, fresh, nice citric balance, fruit more towards apples and pears than tropics, decent minerality and richness, proper GC weight, long, persistent and concentrated, improved markedly in glass and last glass the best, grippy, young and blessedly unpoxed…...but Sauzet's record on this front is appalling so you never know what to expect! Fully mature clean bottle could probably improve on current F+ (18).

6th of 12, opened an hour, perfect cork and level, rather beautiful and layered, long and concentrated, seems to be settling after a rocky start (see my previous notes eg 10/16), curiously the last glass started to have prickle on tongue and show VA, weight and structure to improve for at least 10 years, scope to upgrade from current F (17.5).

4th of 6...poxy and poor, no typicity whatsoever, what style it has is lumpy and oversweet, not one bottle of a 6 pack so far has been worth drinking. Poor (10).

2nd of 12, opened 45 minutes, perfect cork and level, paler, tighter, more mineral and tense, long, persistent with good concentration. At least F (17.5)…….evidently great bottle variation as this bottle much finer than my first only 3 weeks ago!

4th and 5th of 6, opened 30 minutes, apparently perfect corks and levels - first CORKED and undrinkable, second delightful, much more nuanced and harmonious than last bottle in 18, probably a point but good for 5 years. F+ (18).

Another extraordinary Sylvaner from Albert, mid yellow, bright; grassy, gooseberry, no cat's pee, quite complex and floral; medium, long, persistent, complex for Sylvaner, not as concentrated or sweet as his Diablos, more a VT than SGN, and losing its sugars so presenting quite dry, probably a point, perfect on night but did not hold up particularly well on third and fourth night. VF (18.5).

3rd of 12, opened 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, change in right direction since Jan 19 monolithic bottle, fresher, more nuance, tighter, brighter but still with attractive ripe fruit of vintage, well mannered tannic structure, scope to upgrade, excellent RQP. F (17.5).

5th of 12, opened 2 hours, perfect cork and level, flavour profile as described in my previous notes, mainly cassis led, although not particularly concentrated, very harmonious and with fine acidic lift giving life to the fruit, scope to improve further. Another fine plus showing (18).

19th of 24, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, going through a very attractive phase in a fruit forward manner and with a fine sweetish mid palate, nice minerality and balance if ultimately less to it than the preceding VF LLC and Latour 95s. F (17.5)…..always one of the better left bank 99s with enough to it to go another 10 years if well cellared.

5th of 24, opened 3 hours decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, very aristocratic as befits Latour and austere as is the vintage, more closed than my last bottle noted in Feb 18, indeed harder work than more graceful LLC 95 on same night if ultimately more complex, needs time yet. VF (18.5) on potential.

17th of 36, opened 3 hours decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, all the fine attributes of my previous notes but now losing angularity and singing, indeed pleasanter on night than Latour 95, though I think the Latour is even more complex and is the better bet for the long term. VF (18.5)…..more complex than otherwise attractive Barton 99 on same night.

3rd of 12, opened 90 minutes, decanted an hour, very impressive, silky black cherry, quite mineral, hint of cola, very long, persistent and concentrated, nice drive to fruit, entering mature phase with 10+ years ahead. VF (18.5)…..Combottes shows well in ripe vintages like 99 as one of the few prems in a wall of grand crus!

3rd of 12, opened 30 minutes, perfect level half travelled cork, still on lean and simple side with sharp lemon/lime cut, seemed to be putting on weight in glass and showing more after an hour, so should probably decant, suspect just entering drinking window, scope for upgrade. Currently VGI (17).

16th of 24, opened 3 hours decanted for an hour, perfect level cork half travelled, if this wine showed a fraction more fruit, it would be worthy of a very fine rating, as it is one is left with a marvellous structure and silky mouthfeel, but with flavours dominated by tobacco, suffused with hints of smoke and ash which curiously worked quite well with lamb shoulder but made a poor and unbalanced drink by itself, drink up based on my last couple of bottles as hard to see this getting better from here, in spite of still youthful appearance. Just about F (17.5).

11th of 12, opened 2 hours, perfect cork and level, as ever an attractive if less energetic whack of ripe plummy fruit, however it's depressingly simple and monolinear, no sign at 20 years of developing greater nuance, probably best drunk up. G+ (15.5).

4th of 6, opened an hour, perfect level, cork half travelled, final quarter broke off but was extracted relatively cleanly with some trouble, unchanged from October 17 bottle, still in rather brutal unforthcoming phase with first bottle showing more, needs time as underlying quality not in doubt. 1st of 12, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and level - mid yellow, quite leggy; pears, peach, some citrus, little mineral or saline, richer rather than chiselled; medium bodied, ok length, persistence and concentration, tad fat, nice enough without being standout, if it tightens and shows greater minerality, it could be due a significant upgrade. VG (16).

VF (18.5)……...as if to reinforce point, a quarter bottle decanted into a vacuvined half bottle and drunk the following night alongside the Arlaud Roche 02 showed greater depth, nuance and balance than the previous night and with more to it and greater transparency than the Arlaud wine....potential upside in both!

3rd of 6, pnp, perfect cork and level, previous notes very fine or better last in 2010 - from Zotzenberg, golden but bright; spiced and honeyed with a bite, bananas and pineapple; full, unctuous, long, very persistent, complex and spicey, attractive cut and fresh for such a big wine, no sense of botrytis (I think the concentration comes from a cold and windy early autumn shrivelling the grapes - paserillage), fully mature but no rush.
