Honored the passing of John Shafer with a great bottle of Hillside at North Pond, Chicago

It’s a powerful Napa Cab in a very good way. It’s drinking beautifully now or can sit for many years. I’d probably prefer it in another 3+ years but there’s nothing “wrong” with it today.

Beautiful Napa red but I'm biased. I was married in 2002 and love most Napa 2002s (& '02 champs of course)

Give it 2 years and it will be great. Right now the tannin is mouth-drying and the fruit is so big it hides some of the complexity. Don't get me wrong, this is a very nice wine-just be patient.

Decanted during dinner and drank over two hours.
This wine is in a great spot right now. I didn't get any of the alcohol heat previous reviewers mentioned. Maybe it's better integrated in that time?

Good wine. Lots of red fruits with medium gripping tannin. Probably better in two years.

Mascot is hard for me to understand. It's marketed as young-vines from Harlan properties (Harland, Bond, Promontory) but it's not the 2nd wine because that's The Maiden. I'd place it in line with $60-$85 Napa cabs but Mascot has a Harlan premium that puts it closer to $100/bottle.

Anyone have any thoughts?

From the winery:
At first sight a lovely bright golden colour.
A very charismatic fresh nose, promise of natural intensity and elegance with strong presence of fruits, fruits of all types. A diverse bouquet of orange aromas with some notes of liquorice and light chocolate biscuit can be enjoyed.
On the palate, astonishing, balanced and delicate with significant fresh, tropical, wild and crystalised fruits. It is a hymn to fruit: red, white and citrus fruit with notes of cassis, chocolate, candied-orange peel, cocoa beans, honey with hints of smoke and toast enhanced by a vibrant, persistent long finish.
It is a balanced dialogue between Pinot Noir (40%) and Chardonnays (39%) with Meunier (21%).

Great big Napa cab so it was everything I expected. Im a big fan of 2002 Napa cabs and this is right up there with the best of that vintage.

Drank at The Arthur J in Manhattan Beach, CA

Wow wine! It's remarkably balanced in its youth. Watch out Hillside Select. There's serious competition in Stag's Leap-but Shafer's Hillside Select is $100 less per bottle than Odette Reserve.

First, it's too early to open this wine. Give it 1-2 years in the cellar.

Dark red fruits, intense but smooth. Very nice but begs for my time to soften and integrate.

Tasted along a 2002 HSS which seemed to need a few more years in the cellar to catch up.

92+ because it needs another year to balance out.
It's called Remnant because it's the "leftovers": 35% Tempranillo, 25% Petit Verdot, 23% Syrah and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon. The "24" refers to 24-months in the barrel vs regular Remnant's 18-months in the barrel.

Field Blend ~ 85% Cab Sauv, 5% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc, 5% Petit Verdot
Mixed Loam & Volcanic Soils
100 cases produced 13% Alc. 50% Whole Cluster

Planted in 1999 above the fog line on a rocky ridge just 5 miles away from the Pacific Ocean, this vineyard boasts a westerly gaze that falls upon several of the most prominent Pinot Noir Vineyards in California. The same combination of cool ocean air and plentiful sunshine that has built some of the states most balanced Pinots, has proven that it can ripen the Bordeaux varietals if planted in just the right spot. The mild and extended growing season allows the grapes to reach a deep maturity of color and flavor at lower alcohol levels, while maintaining a natural acidity that will keep this wine fresh for years and years.

Notes: This wine reflects a classic era of California Cabernet. Deep red in color, the nose leads with muddled raspberries, briar, cassis and a hint of pencil lead. Black cherry and balsam on the palate, the wine is just dense and chewy enough to let you know it is Cabernet, but drinks bright and fresh with lively acidity. Soft and resolved tannins and a touch of cigar box round out the lingering finish.

Aging: Quite frankly, we expect this wine to last a long time. If you open a bottle within the next year a 2 hour decant is a must, and don't be afraid to open the day before. Drink 2016-2025

Ordered a bunch based on Antonio Galloni's strong review so I thought I'd open a bottle early to see for myself:

It's a blend of Cab/Petite Sirah. 14.1% alcohol. Not too heavy, not too hot. Really vibrant & well balanced. My sinus cold prevents more detailed notes but I really liked it. Better in 3 years

From Robb Report: Nose exudes perfumes of ripe apple, earthy charred oak, pomegranate, and raspberry. Concentrated flavors of blackberry, roasted coffee, porcini mushroom, and anise.

Personal note: Agree with above. Drinking well now. Dark and intense. It will be fun to track this inaugural release over the next 5-10 years.

Shared at the Hundred Acre dinner at the Strand House in Manhattan Beach. (In order of preference: 2001 Kayli, 2001 Deep Time, 2006 Ark, 2006 Deep Time, 2010 Ark)

2001 Kayli stood out. It was an incredible wine that stood out amongst other very good wines. The 2001 Deep Time didn't show the same freshness or fruitiness when compared to standard 2001 Kayli Morgan. No complaints though. The 2001 Deep Time is still a great wine.
