It may cellar well for another year or two, but it’s hard now to drink this now.

Sweet front, nice pepper finish that lingers with a smokey, oak undertones. Had it with a crown roast, but is easily bold enough for much stronger meats.

I had this too young.

Still needs a little more time or a solid decanting. However, after letting breath in my glass, it settled down. Also, avoid overly sweet foods with this one. I had eaten some hollween candy about 30 minutes before opening, which made it overly bitter until I ate something salty.

I was surprised at how long I had to let this sit to get it to really open, up considering its age. Once it had time to breath it was well formed, sweeter than expected with a smooth mid-pallet. However, it didn't stay in this sweet spot for long. For the next bottle, I'll have to make sure to have some more friends over to make sure it is consumed in one sitting.

When I tasted the 2013 edition of Surly's Darkness on its release date, it was a bit stiff and not as smooth as I remember previous years, the alcohol was dominating the flavor. Now, almost 6 months after that, it has already mellowed nicely. While there is still a bit of alcohol on the attack; the deep, dark malts come forward quickly to take over the mid-palate. You get hits of chocolate and vanilla that linger nicely.
