2014 Sami-Odi Shiraz XIV Barossa
The ‘Hors Choix’ or ‘Super Choice’ from the very modest and arduous 2014 season. After bearing the heartache of losing the initial crop to merciless spring frosts, the second shooting of the vines were harvested during the first two weeks of April; a full two months later than usual. Harvest is typically tended to clad in beach attire in mid-late February; this year's pickings were carried out in jackets and woollen hats. When all was said and done, yields equated to a rather minute 5.7 hectoliters per hectare or 773 grams per vine. The numbers speak volumes of a season this unique so (for entertainment value) they are listed below:

DW-OLD (0.775 Hectare) 2 Barriques 885 plants sown between 1888 & 1912 (9 rows x 95 plants)
ER-27 (1.07 Hectare) 3 Barriques 1170 plants from 1927 (30 rows x 39 plants)
DW-95VSP (1.979 Hectare) 4 Barriques 2898 plants from 1995 (21 rows x 138 plants)
DW-96VSP (0.868 Hectare) 2 Barriques 1236 plants from 1996 (12 rows x 103 plants)

These 11 Burgundian Pièces were carefully assembled and bottled amidst the spring of 2015 after enduring an 82 week elevage. The bottles were filled without filtration, fining or sparging (the removal of naturally occurring oxygen & C02) and all transfers were completed via gravity prior to bottling.
3288 bottles were filled.

8/11/17, 12:08 AM - Can't remember where I got this note from and think this was supposed to be a private note not general tasting note. That being said, I tried this wine recently and unfortunately we didn't have time to decant properly and it was still way too young. Might have been OK with a multi-hour decant. Not unpleasant at all just needs more time.

We opened the Magnum that had actually been given for free alongside a large SQN order due to the fact that the Cork was damaged. The Magnum showed severe oxidation and whilst nose was OK, taste was poor. Couldn't leave a bottle I had wanted to try on that note so we cracked upon a standard bottle of B&B. After a 30 minute decant it was spectacular. Dark, powerful, full of fruit, amazing nose and a long finish. The Black and Blue is relatively rare and therefore not too many tastings to reference but I have heard that bottle quality varies a lot. This one was amazing. At 22 years of age, Manfred's first officially recognised SQN (other than the project wines) was fresh and one I won't forget for a while. Only 2 bottles left now, will have to try and find some more.

6/16/2016 11:03:00 PM - Your account is suspicious: the 12 magnums made were not offered through SQN. This was a wine made by Michael Havens for Krankl at Campanile, prior to any SQN.

I didn't say I bought it from SQN. It actually came from Hedonism in London in 2014 and was drunk in a mixed line up with 20+ guests present in mid December 2014. The empty bottle is back at Hedonism with Alistair Viner if you would like some independent verification. I have an additional magnum and just in case you need a picture to satisfy your doubting little brain, have added a shot of the magnum on its own and the magnum in the line up from that day.

So first you can't read, as I never stated the origin of the wine. I said it was “first officially recognized SQN” …. And by the way those aren't my words, will let you search out who said that if you're still bored. If you go to Fine Wine Geek listing all SQN wines, which most would use as a generally accepted list of all Manfreds wines, it lists this alongside the Project Wines which were also made in partnership, as you correctly point out (the B&B not Project) , with Michael Havens. OK, so SQN branded wines started 95, but still not sure the point you are making? Why is my account suspicious? We didn’t drink it? It wasn’t a magnum? I didn’t buy if from Hedonism?

If you don’t know where the pictures are it shows what a muppet you are. There are 3 images of this wine listed next to the wine on Cellar Tracker. As you are obviously some sort of trolling retard, top left hand corner, there is a photo, beneath it says 1 of 3. To the right are two little triangles, if you click those it scrolls through photos. The single magnum against a white wall with a blind behind and the line up showing the magnum near center were added post your previous comments.

Go and get a life, you don’t contribute to this site in any way, you don’t list wines, you don’t add tasting notes and just add garbage. Anyway thats 5 minutes of my life wasted and I won't bother engaging with you any longer. This is a wine site and we post as lovers of wine.
