It's changed since I last posted on it in 2016, but not for the worse. Getting very much a whiskey note, particularly on the palate, now (which is fine by me.)
Once again, it paired nicely with chicken ... although this time it was carryout from Popeye's. :-P

Got another bottle of this recently in a Twisted Oak "mystery case" sale. It is still everything it was the last time I reviewed it, three years ago.

Got another bottle of this recently as part of a Twisted Oak "mystery case" sales. It was still every bit as good as it was when I last reported on it 3 1/2 years ago.

Almost four years later, very little has changed. Still magnificent.

Until last week, I forgot that I had bought another bottle of this about a year ago. :-)
I was a little worried that it might be a little tired, or even completely gone, given both the suggested drinking window, and the fact that the cork was a little crunchy when I popped it. No worries! This is still a big, solid, luscious wine. My comments from 6 1/2 years ago still apply, but also this time there was a STRONG cedar note when I decanted it, that carried over into the glass.
Sadly, I'm pretty sure I don't have yetanother bottle of this lovely wine in hiding somewhere else ...

Perfect pairing for a dinner of (fairly spicy and garlicky) slow-cooker beans and smoked sausage.

Also $3.99 at my (Kettering, OH) Trader Joe's. The wine dude there described it as tasting like a $7 or $8 bottle, and that seems about right ... definitely brings to mind several wines at that price point that we buy regularly from TJ's. Slightly sweet and very straightforward, but highly drinkable. I'll probably grab a couple more bottles before they run out.

As a (relatively) cheap last-of-the-night glass/bottle, it's more than serviceable. A little on the sweet side, very easy drinker. Could be from anywhere ... I've had similarly-priced wines with a similar taste profile from California, Columbia Valley ...

Three years later, and my second (and, sadly, last) bottle of this is still drinking exceptionally well. Big woodsy-earthy-smoky nose, subdued, mellow tannins, and that cherry cola. Just lovely.

DRINK NOW!!! This is my last bottle, and it's definitely starting to slide away. Far from undrinkable, but also not what it was originally.

I would strongly suggest that this vintage is well into the DRINK NOW phase of its life. We finished our last bottle tonight ... it was still quite drinkable, but definitely not what it used to be. (I don't regret it being the last.)

Pepper, both green and black, on the nose. Soft, but not flabby, lingers nicely.

My previous description from over 20 months ago still holds true. Wish this wasn't my last bottle - it tastes like it's nowhere near the end.

Still going strong, despite the listed drinking window, although if I had another bottle it definitely wouldn't sit for another 22 months. :-) (This was, however, my last of two bottles.)

Crisp, but not steely or minerally. Nice notes of melons and berries, and just a little bit of floral. Will likely revisit this in a couple of months, once spring arrives.

Same as it always has been, vintage after vintage, still pretty much our only go-to for a Saturday night homemade pizza.

Nose is fairly subdued, even with heavy swirling ... just a little sense of spice and green pepper. Very soft on the entry, without feeling flabby, but firms up on the finish

Crisply sweet with being cloying. A little almond, and stone fruits. Paired well with chicken in a fairly spicy Indian simmer sauce.

Cheap, young, loud and cheerful. A good pairing for pork chops simmered in a fairly spicy verde sauce.

Massive. Bright candy-coated nose. Rich cherry cola, with quietly firm tannins. Wish I had more! (At least I do have other vintages of their Roosevelt offering.)

22 months later, it's seeming somewhat more opened up and approachable. Again, decanted through the Vinturi. The tannins are very present, but not feeling massive to me. Kind of a SweetTart note on the back end. FWIW, my wife, on first tasting, said, "This is Twisted Oak, right?" And yeah, it does give a vibe like their juice frequently does.

Not bad, especially given the price, but also not very characteristically Carménère. Went straight from the bottle to the glass this time ... will probably get another bottle and try decanting / aerating it to see if that improves things any.

Earthy, green pepper-y nose. Somewhat dusty on the tongue, kind of muted and soft, but pleasantly so. Hides the fairly high (14.7%) alcohol well.

A complete fruit bomb. It's possible to do that style and still produce something interesting. This is not such a wine. No real sense of the varietal ... tasted more like any of a half-dozen similarly-priced red blends.

3 1/2 years later, and yeah, I think it's much more where it's supposed to be. Nose is somewhat restrained, sweet 'n' spicy. Very solidly structured, firm tannins, and a mellow finish. Very nice.

Big woodsy nose as I poured it into the decanter ... in the glass it's somewhat more muted but still very earthy. Just a hint of whiskey tang to it, along with dark syrupy cherries. Paired very well with homemade pulled pork burritos. (Since I didn't have an actual Rioja available, this was the next best thing!)

Still tastes very young, and a little tight, but the potential for future greatness is clearly there. All the same, paired well with a shepherd's pie made from leftover smoked lamb.

This is in a really great place right now. Soft and mellow, without being at all flabby. Spicy floral nose, dark berries. Paired well with charcoal-grilled strip steaks, oven fries, and edamame.
(Pairing a steak with a Napa cab? Yeah, I'm such a rebel! :-)

This is a fairly hot wine (15.2%) and I can taste the alcohol, although it's more of a whiskey note than pure burn. Didn't really have the opportunity to give this bottle the kind of time/room to breathe I normally might - have to see how that affects the next bottle.
