2017 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Wachenheimer Riesling R late release Pfalz

Tasted at a trade event in NJ. Made from declassified "Premier Cru/Erste Lage" fruit as I was told (actually told GG fruit but as corrected by QWERTZ that they have no GG in Wachenheim asa confirmed on their website). Aged in large multi-year-used casks called “Stückfass” Very minerally, along with lychee, white peach and lime. Good acidity but not bracing and maybe a touch less than I expected. Slightly nutty on the finish. Very tasty. My score may have benefited from a distinct lack of the best Riesling competitors at this tasting.

10/1/22, 9:32 AM - Just for your information: Bürklin-Wolf has no GG in Wachenheim, "only" P.C. Wines (= Premier Crus, Erste Lage). But the wine certainly has the quality of a "small" GG.

10/2/22, 12:41 AM - Bürklin-Wolf has Grand Crus in Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg. In Wachenheim they only have grapes in Premier Cru-Vineyards. You can see this on their website, too. The Forster, Deidesheimer and Ruppertsberger Village (Ortswein) is made of grapes of Grand Cru vineyards, but not the Wachenheimer.

This is a - f a n t a s t i c - Spätburgunder! You'll need a really good Burgundy to top this. Darker in color than expected, a ripe nose and flavors of dark fruit, some spice, some well integrated acidity, all well balanced and it's looooong.. I think it's drinking very well now.

noch sehr kraftvoll, viel Mineralik, die aber die Aromatik dominiert, Abgang mittellang, etwas grob. Hat sich am zweiten und dritten Tag deutlich komplexer und runder gezeigt.
