2016 Domaine La Bouïssiere Gigondas Red Rhone Blend

This is an absolutely marvelous Gigondas! It displays stunning aromas of ripe raspberries, blackberries, garrigue and herbs on the nose. The taste is full-bodied, thick, intensive, freshly acidic and tannic, providing wonderful notes of ripe berries, plum, garrigue, herbs, minerals, licorice and smoke.

This wine can be very enjoyable now, if you decant it properly, as I did.

Lovely confit lemon and peach flavours. Stone minerality balances out richness. Good acidity. But can’t say I rejoice in the the extremely reductive wine making; to me it detracts, more and more, from the enjoyment.

Pale straw colour. Powerful nose: creamy, fruity, toasty, then very nutty. Orange, plum, spice, even a touch of brandy - this is a bruiser. The taste is similarly robust, very vinous. Greengage, guava, a little chalky on the back end. One of those 'chardonnay first, champagne second' wines, and a food wine wine with some ageing potential. Seriously good value. [Cork + cage; 12.5% abv; Marks & Spencer, £35].

This is an astonishing wine. Not at all what you expect from a Cotes du Rhone. It is a pale limpid red colour and combined with the nose of red fruit - predominately strawberry - & cherry it is reminiscent of a Beaune. It has a slightly sweet taste, blind I would have guessed NZ Pinot. After a while in the glass it develops a peppery finish. Splendid, complex and a challenge to the senses.

Not ready yet. Vanilla? and tannin massive fruit underneath. needs 4 years to come together hopefully. retasted a couple of times and the oak is simply too much. Look out for the 2012 which is a beauty. Skip this vintage.

12/28/15, 6:22 AM - Eric the vigneron suggested to me that it is best tasted after 10 hours in the decanter at which point he said it becomes "almost Burgundian".

The nose showed dark red fruits with dry spice, minty herbal tones and a hint of cedar. On the palate, it was youthful and restrained yet showed pure focused fruit. This turned more to tart berry on the finish with a lingering mineral tone.
