Given a 2 hour decant , this wine will start to reveal complex and developing aromas - a kaleidoscope of light as air violets, that dusty incense smell in an empty church, hints of leather, herbs - maybe fennel, cherries, chocolate coated raspberries, menthol. There is chewy acidity, and furry tannins , but the silky smooth mouthfeel carries you through to rich finish of cherries, ripe plums, chocolate , and a surprising quality of light , dry salinity. This is a wine of finesse and delicacy , already delicious with food , and will improve with a couple more years in the cellar. Exceptional value , and highly recommended!

Long tears stain the glass , with a little fading at the rim. The nose is a muted medium of plums, vanilla and cherries, chocolate menthol, spicy almond, and delicate white flowers. Medium bodied, with high acidity, the palate shows flavours of sour plums, and currants with a dry spicy finish. Light and acidic, this wine does the job with food. Lacks sufficient fruit for long aging. In the past would have been classed as " a luncheon claret " - a lovely expression conjuring up images of leathery gentlemen's clubs in London's Pall Mall! At £13 ( $15 ) from German discount retailer Lidl , this represented exceptional value.

Light garnet in the glass, the nose shows stewed plums, cherries, a spicy incense quality, the scent of flowers that are on the verge of rotting ? Still acidic and chewily refreshing, this wine is relatively full bodied with flavours of unripe but juicy red plums. Tangy, and mouthfilling, this is a fine accompaniment to food. The quality of its producer is evident. No hurry to drink up.

Pale Provencal onion-skin pink in apprarance, the nose shows white flowers, peach, flintiness, and warm red berries. Bone dry with some hints of tannin, and medium plus acidity, there are flavours of unripe peach, grapefruit, redcurrants, and Maraschino cherriies , with a dry mineral finish. A refreshing wine for food but uncompromisingly dry and acidiic , making it less suitable to drink on its own. Maybe it will soften a little next year.

A light and forthright pinot noir from the lower Loire Valley. A nose of delicate sweet cherries with hints of vanilla, rhubarb and beetroot, and a fleeting hints of florality. A palate of medium acidity, with flavours of sour plums. In no sense complex, but a very pleasant accompaniment to roast pork loin.

It is a light lemon yellow in appearance, with a medium nose of white flowers (acacia or early season clematis ), sea shells , minerality, hints of honey , pears , and peach. Acidity is medium, and medium plus in body, on the palate there are flavours of apple, and a vegetal herbal quality. There is a medium finish redo
ent of a nutty minerslity. A wine of poise and some distinction that hints at the quality of its producer. Bourgogne blanc on steroids and a good qpr.

A vibrant ruby, this wine shows a nose of funky mushrooms, wet leaves, camphor and rosemary, lavender, Maraschino cherries, fleeting hints of violets, and stewed raspberries. On the palate , medium - plus acidity is complemented by flavours of fresh cherries that are on the verge of ripeness. Give this wine plenty of air and it will release surprisingly complex aromas of Pinot Noiir. A great QPR and a much better made wine than its modest price tag implies.

Quite acidic on opening, but an hour's decant served to smooth over the rougher edges! Good PN nose of cherries, truffly earthiness, chocolate, and beetroot. Medium plus acidity, and flavours of unripe plums and sour cherries. Bought from clearance bin at my local grocery store , this bottle represented exceptional QPR . Drink with food.

Still young, this wine is tannic when first opened and needs a long decant at present to smooth off the rough edges. The nose shows cherries, floral hints, menthol, and sour plums. The palate has medium plus acidity and tannin, with flavours of cherries and unripe plums. Keep this in your cellar for another couple of years.

Nose of white flowers, seashells, strawberries, spicy orange ,ripe white peaches, and melon. Creamy mouthfeel , with flavours of marzipan, orange, and grapefruit. The burn of the tannin is disappearing , and there is a long finish of dry salinity and rich orange. Delicious mature rose , that will continue to drink well for a couple of years.

A velvety , mature Chianti, showing a nose of cherries, deep red old rose petals, leather and balsamic. On the palate, the wine is rich and mouth -filling, with medium acidity, with flavours of sour plums, cherries, and frangipane. The finish is a little short. This is a deliciously full and smooth wine to accompany food. However , it may have a limited lifespan - drink now and enjoy!

Lemon tinged with lime, the nose is a mix of white flowers, honied lanolin, lemon sherbet, cheese rind , and perfumed quince. There is still plenty of acidity, with flavours of lime and lemon, leading into that characteristic and idiosyncratic finish of buttered toast. This wine is maybe a little underpowered , but has several years life ahead of it.

A light lemon yellow in appearance , with a nose of white flowers, unripe white peaches , crisp , sweet white-fleshed apples, hints of quince, marzipan, and a note of herbs ( fennel perhaps). On the palate , there is acidity and flavours of saline stone fruits. The saline and bitter finish diminishes this wine when drunk alone .With food , however , it's refreshing and pleasant . Maybe it needs a couple of years to settle down.

Light ruby in appearance, with a medium nose of sweet redcurrants, faint cherry aroma, some toastiness, earthiness and hints of flowers, and rich backdrop of darker fruits and cocoa. Creamy in the mouth , acidity is medium, and there are flavours of sour cherries and unripe plums. A generic wine with little complexity , but well made and very satisfying as an entry level Burgundy . Drink up in the next couple of years.

A pale lemon , with a nose of honeysuckle and light flintiness, green pepper , herbiness, lemon grass, and candied lemon. There is a drying acidity balanced by the creamy texture. There are flavours of grapefruit and papaya leading into a finish of creamy lemon, and lemon meringue pie. A lovely food-worthy Marlborough SB showing the benefits of a little bottle age. No hurry to drink up.

A couple of years since my last note, this wine has matured and really hit its stride . Starting to show hints of garnet , and long glycerous legs, the nose displays sweet Marasca cherries, stewed plums, dried roses, herby menthol, and leather. Acidity is still medium -plus, with the tannins softening, a full mouth feel with rich flavours of chocolate covered cherries , raspberries, and marzipan . A wine of poise and refinement that will continue to develop over the next few years.

A bright ruby with hints of purple, with a nose of dark black cherries, perfumed black raspberries, sharp cranberries, pepper, light florality, and maybe a little earthiness. Plenty of acidity and some fruity tannins, with flavours of sour cherries and cranberries. Accompanies food well , but needs a year or two to settle down. Still too much of everything!

This wine is a light ruby in the glass , with a nose opens up after aeration to display Kirsch/sweet cherries, florality, cooked cranberries, spiciness ,and a pleasant slightly confected note of raspberries tinged with herbs..The acidity is relatively low , the palate smooth and silky, with flavours of sour plums. Elegant and characterful Pinot to enjoy over the next of couple of years.

Deep garnet fading at the rim ,with long viscous legs, the nose shows cassis and pencil box, but with aeration in the glass there is leather , menthol, sweet cherry, dried fruits, and a hint of fresh florality. Tannins have softened , but acidity its still lively and mouth wateringly tangy, accompanying flavours of dry cedar, chocolate, and sweet red fruits ( dried strawberries and cherries). The finish maybe is a little short and thin. Cellared for ten years, this wine was a pleasant surprise. A very correct and satisfying claret , that acoompanied roast leg of lamb perfectly. Drink and enjoy ,or leave for another few years .

Medium ruby, fading at the edges, with pronounced legs, this wine has thrown some light sediment. The nose a mix of light florality ( the vanilla of camellia and clematis), black cherries, earthy truffles, and spicy beetroot. On the palate, acidity is medium, with medium -plus body , producing a satisfyingly smooth mouthfeel, with flavours of cherries . Yes , maybe the finish is a little short but this comes across as a suave and smooth Santenay that accompanied coq au vin perfectly. Ready to drink now or over the next 4-5 years.

A year since my last note on this wine , and if anything it is even more satisfyingly mature and smooth. On the palate , the mouthfeel is rich and full, whilst retaining a refreshing and chewy acidity. The tertiary flavours of dried fruits, and chocolate , mastic and leather, along with tantalising hints of sweet cherries and strawberries. A classic Haut Medoc , deliciously mature , and a fantastic qpr , when purchased a year ago.

A light ruby with legs in appearance, there is a medium -plus nose of fresh violets, cooked strawberries, raspberries, sweet cherries, and a heavier note of cranberries/beetroot. The palate is marked by mouth filling juicy friuit ( plums and cooked strawberries) , and a medium acidity balancing the full fruits. The finish is dry and almost savoury. Delicious Gamay , and a perfect accompaniment to food! Drink up over the next couple of years.

A deep garnet with long legs in appearance, the nose initially shows primary notes of cassis, herbs and a subtle waft of vanilla. With air, there is still blackcurrant/cassis, a herby menthol quality, vanilla soaked cherries , blackberries, and Kirsch. Acidity is still medium plus, there flavours of brambles and plum compote, with a short finish. This wine is in no sense profound , but is still a most satisfying lightish claret , that is a perfect match for roast lamb. Still surprisingly youthful, I would expect at least 5 years life ahead of it.

A blend of Bacchus, Pinot Blanc, and Seyval Blanc ,using parcels from several sources across the South of England. In appearance a very light lemon , with hints of green. On the nose, there are perfumed flowers , herbs, lemon/lime and some minerality. A dry palate , with medium acidity, with flavours of lemon and lime, maybe some mild tropical fruit, and leading into a drying saline finish. This is a refreshing and balanced seafood wine, and a fine example of the art of blending. Give it a try if you see it on a wine list.

Amber in colour, the nose shows off the expected aromas of orange marmalade, apricot jam , honey (botrytis), caramel, and marzipan. Sweet and creamy with flavours of caramelised oranges, toffee, and barley sugar, the acidity is medium minus.it finishes a little short with a slightly watery caramel and barley sugar taste. Pleasant , authentic Sauternes but a little under-powered, and perhaps over the hill.

In no sense a charmer , the nose is a little dumb with with muted aromas of mushrooms ,sour cherries, and and a heavy wall of cooked strawberries.
On the palate, acidity is still high , and there is little joy in terms of flavour. Still tannic and acidic, in common with many 2015s. It may give more pleasure in another 3-5 years. I won' t be holding my breath! However it washed down a rich boeuf bourguignon with ease!

A little reticent when popped and poured. With a decent airing in the glass , there are aromas of flowers, cherries, crystallised rose petals, raspberry sherbet, that savoury beetroot quality, and hints of earthy mushroominess. On the palate , there are smooth flavours of cherries with a kick of residual tannin and acidity at the end . A gentle mature Pinot that accompanies food perfectly.

A pale almost translucent ruby in appearance, a nose of delicate cherries and raspberries, the tang of cranberries, a smoky backdrop, and with aeration you get hints of florality - maybe the faint vanilla of winter clematis. Light and smooth on the palate there is still enough acidity and tannin to give a bit of bite with food. The flavour and finish is of sour cooked cherries. A delightful lissome wine that slips down so easily , yet with all the character of a serious Pinot Noir. Easy drinking but totally satisfying.

Ruby, fading a little to garnet at the rim, with long legs. The nose shows violets, raspberry flavoured chocolate, cherries, coffee, herbs like mint. On the palate , the wine is still quite acidic , giving a chewy mouth watering quality, with flavours of blueberry and raspberry jam, and the alcohol hits you at the end, leaving a sense of lack of balance. Finish is a little short. Loire in Bordeaux , this 100 per cent Cab Franc is a fine pairing with medium rare steak.

The palest of straw yellows, there is a pronounced and expressive nose of fresh white flowers, flower blossom honey, candied lime peel, and a certain slatey minerality. The price ( from German discount chain Aldi )is ridiculously low, and the wine is an alarmingly deep gold in colour ( think a possible specimen bottle!), but it is actually a decent budget Chardonnay . The nose shows mierality, hints of white flowers, and tropical fruit ( under ripe pineapple?). Creamy mouthfeel, decent acidity , and a surprising finish of dry minerality. At £3.99 ( $5.25 ) fantastic qpr!

A fairly youthful Pinot Gris, light gold in the glass with just that hint of copper typical of Pinot Gris. On the nose there are aromas of white flowers( acacia), under ripe peaches, ripe Comice pear, honey, and hints of almond, and some smokiness. Just off dry , acidity is high , and there is that alcoholic burn that often characterises young Alace Pinot Gris. On the palate , there are flavours of cooked apples leading into a surprisingly long finish of honeyed butterscotch , and orange marmalade. This was an excellent accompaniment to organic duck legs , coated in Seville marmalade . The combination of a relatively rich fruit quality with high acidity makes this a great wine to accompany food, which is exactly what this wine was intended to do.
