Double-decanted and enjoyed over 48 hours. This is a stunning brunello from the 2010 vintage. Vibrant on the nose and palate, it is full of energy and structure but somehow elegant and open at the same time. I plan on checking back into this beautiful wine/vintage again in a year or two.

Double decanted based on initial taste. Enjoyed over several hours, the 2011 Paiagallo was in a beautiful place and surprisingly fresh. There is plenty of freshness and structure here and while in a great spot, this may still improve over the next several years.

Double decanted after opening, enjoyed over several days. This is in a beautiful place right now, with tart cherry fruit evolving to lively red fruit over the course of hours. For a Rancia, this did surprisingly well without food after having some time to open up. This still has many years of evolution ahead.

Opened and enjoyed over three days. Quite powerful aromatics and on the palate, and even on day 3 the wine was holding up well. There were some strange suspended solids which I haven't seen before, however everything else was in order. Given the pedigree and vintage, this seems to have many years of good life ahead.

Double decanted a couple hours before enjoying over a few hours. Showing well and at the early part of its drinking window, this was extremely balanced. With the aromatics typically seen from La Morra, it was difficult to keep my glass down. On the palate, this had plenty of life an the tannins were more integrated than anticipated. Enjoy now although I expect the 2010 oddero will have a long life ahead.

Opened and enjoyed over 2 days. This was undoubtedly Sangiovese and quite delicious. However, this has the pedigree of a high end Rosso di Montalcino, not a brunello. There were subtle aromas of blue flowers on the nose, and red fruits on the palate. The quick finish was crisp with little length or complexity. I hope this is in a dumb phase or related to bottle variation.

Double decanted and enjoyed over 6 hours. This came to life after ~3 hours, showing incredible freshness and fruit at nearly 20 years old. This was unmistakably nebbiolo, showing more finesse than brawn. A beautiful example of Barbaresco. This is starting it's slow decline but should still show well for at least a few more years.

PnP, enjoyed over 24 hours. The 2008 Uccelliera BdM captured the aromas and flavors of this estate's style in a richer, more fruit forward style than typical. There is ample tannin and acidity to match, keeping the wine in harmony. This is in a great place right now and the perfect wine for hearty fall/winter cuisine.

Double decanted and enjoyed over three days (I've consistantly found the Massolino wines require at least 24 hours before opening up). The 2005 Vigna Rionda Riserva is starting to enter its drinking window. This vintage is showing a more elegant version of the Rionda vineyard although I expect this is still putting on weight. While enjoyable now, I will wait at least 3 years before revisiting as this is built for the long haul.

Opened and enjoyed over several hours. Elegant aromas, extremely floral and lively on the nose. On the palate, there were some good tertiary notes but most of the structure and fruit had faded making this a one dimensional wine. Definitely past it’s prime which is surprising given the vintage. This was my first experience with Le Chuise, the style must be better suited for earlier enjoyment.

Opened and enjoyed over two days. As others mentioned, this is shut down at first and needs time in the glass to show its best. Really started to open about two hours in with aromas of dark fruit and subtle spice, and sweet red cherry on the palate. I really enjoyed this style of dolcetto.

Opened and enjoyed over 3 days. Showed well each night with amazing aromatics on day one, and more refined structure on days two and three. The nose was gorgous with intense rose and some hints of cigar box, capturing traditional barolo in every sense. On the palate, this was a muscular barolo especially considering the vintage. There is plenty of beautiful, refined fruit and velvety yet sweet tannins. The finish was lengthy and while this behaved like an old school barolo, a touch of modern treatment could be found on the finish. The '05, while drinking well now, is definitely build for the long-haul.

Double decanted and waited 24 hours before drinking given this was seriously closed down. Very expressive nose of red fruits and minerals, this really opened up on day 2. While on day one the finish was brisk with sour notes, day two showed plenty of richness and balance on the palate with a lovely finish. I was happy to see this is in a good window at 8 years old although I'd highly recommend opening 24 hours in advance.

Couldn't resist opening a bottle of Tig to pair with a grilled Tri Tip. Double decanted and enjoyed over 8 hours, this showed very typical of a Tignanello. Upon opening, the nose was filled with spice and mineral tones with sour cherry on the palate. As the evening went on, the sour cherry note evolved to red fruit with fine tannins and a lingering finish. It's always a pleasure to open a bottle of Tig and the 2012 is in a good place.

The '10 La Spinetta Barolo Garretti was one of the most exciting wines I tasted 5 years ago as the 2010 barolo vintage started hitting the market. At the time, I had limited experience and understanding of traditional techniques vs modern. While the Barolo Garretti is modern in style and I strongly prefer Barolo made in a way that showcases the typical characteristics of nebbiolo, I still very much enjoyed this wine for what it is. Surprisingly open for business, the Garretti showed aromas of fresh rose and strawberries. On the palate, there was an impressive finesse with fine tannins and well-integrated oak. It's hard to tell if this is the peak or if further improvement will come, and I look forward to finding out.

A beautiful Pajore with haunting aromas typical of this vineyard. On the palate, still wound fairly tight with grippy tannins. Now in its drinking window, this should continue to improve over the next several years and drink well for at least a decade.

Double decanted and enjoyed over 30 hours. Perfumed nose of roses and minerals. Really opened up on day two with rich fruit, leather, and a lengthy finish. Impressive balance. This wine has turned into a beauty and should still improve over the coming years given its structure.

Extremely representive of the vintage, the 2012 Il Colle is showing well at this early stage. This is such a pure, elegent style of brunello, highlighting the beauty of Sangiovese. Dark cherry, cooking spice, and some rustic qualities emerge at this stage. this is structured to do well for many years to come.

Double decanted and enjoyed over 5 hours. Expressive on the nose with a blend of blue flower and mineral-tinged aromas. Full-bodied, showing much more weight than previous vintages. Still showing mostly primary notes very typical of sangiovese grosso. An over abundance of fruit and tannin suggest this one is built for decades although it's drinking so well now. I cannot wait to revisit in 5-10 years when the tertiary notes are showing.

Opened and enjoyed over several hours. Floral nose with blue flowers and wild cherries also evident. On the palate, this is showing impressive, fresh structure with a lengthy mineral finish and velvety tannins. Extremely enjoyable now yet there is plenty of structure here for the long haul. This is a beautiful wine especially considering the vintage.

Opened and enjoyed over 24 hours. Immediately, this was open for business. Plenty of blue flowers and cherries on the nose, with pure Sangiovese notes on the palate. This has a long life ahead with plenty of fruit and structure. Tasted more like a recent vintage and extremly balanced at this stage. Il Colle flies under the radar and I hope things stay this way

Double decanted as the '10 Rancia was showing very little when first opened. After a couple hours, the Rancia started showing its true colors. The purity of this wine was impressive on both the nose and palate. Seemingly just born, the Rancia was much more elegant than typical, showing a racy yet refined structure and a solid core of fruit. While still a baby, this also showed impressive complexity on the close. While entering its drinking window now, there is still upside with the '10 Rancia with a long life ahead.

Enjoyed during a holiday tasting event, and this was my surprise of the evening. I had previously tasted this at the winery and was unimpressed with the aggressive structure and oak treatment. However, a few years of bottle age have turned this into a stunner. I especially enjoyed the balance from this full-bodied yet complex chard. Definitely one worth seeking out!

Opened the evening before serving and so happy I did. In fact, I thought the first bottle was flawed (VA) so I opened a second bottle which had the exact same characteristics as the first. I revisited both bottles the next afternoon and was pleasantly surprised in the evolution that took place. The VA in both bottles was not recognizable and both bottles showcased classically made Brunello in an excellent place. The nose leaned floral and mineral, and on the palate it showed excellent structure for a more medium-bodied style, with a lengthy finish.

While showing well, I am going to hold my remaining bottles for a few years to let the tertiary characteristics develop.

Double decanted and enjoyed primarily within the first four hours after opening. Extremely complex, with truffle, dark fruit, and cigar box on the nose. On the palate, everything was in balance even if this is becoming a bit tired, and the elegance was impressive. This wine is an excellent example of why old Barolo is so interesting and worth seeking out.

Popped and poured last of 6 bottles. The '05 Marcenasco has developed nicely. While deeply colored, the nose is stunning and fragrant with roses and dark cherry. Full-bodied on the palate, there is still plenty of fruit with very good balance and a lengthy finish. There is enough structure here for many more years of evolution.

Opened and enjoyed over the course of 24 hours. Much more well integrated than recent Pajana vintages, the '04 shows a beautiful nose highlighted by dark fruits with very little evidence of oak. On the palate, the fruit is slightly masked by dominating wood tannins but this is well balanced. Certainly a solid effort and enjoyable wine by Domenico Clerico although not my preferred style.

Opened and enjoyed over several hours. Rich, seductive barbaresco which is showing extremely well right now. On the concentrated side and while this leans towards a more modern style, the typical characteristics of nebbiolo shine through. Plenty of structure suggests this could improve further, but at a perfect stage while bottles from stronger years sit in the cellar.

Popped and poured, enjoying over a couple days. Classic Nebbiolo aromas with some funk which integrated over time. Distinctive to the producer and vintage with plenty of acidity to maintain over the long haul. Drinking so well now it will be difficult to keep my remaining bottles much longer. Decanted an hour prior to pouring at a restaurant. All components were beautifully integrated, with a more restrained fruit profile considerin the vintage. More medium-bodied but with plenty of structure to further improve although with everything in balance, this is drinking so well now. Wish I had more of this.

Popped cork the evening prior to drinking. Small sample suggested the bottle was past its peak. The next afternoon, I sampled again and the wine was completely closed although less acidic/bitter. At this stage, I double decanted as a last resort and I am sure glad I did. Typical nebbiolo aromas started to show along with an expanded fruit profile on the palate. My wife and I enjoyed over the next several hours while the Cortese barbaresco continued to evolve, showing more complexity over time. This bottle was a real treat once it started to show itself.

This multi-dimensional red is showing extremely well. In a unabashed, fruit-forward style, the Nardo has great balance and many redeeming qualities typically reserved for old-world reds with serious pedigree. The alcohol is not completely integrated but even so, this is a great value for the price.

Opened 8 hours prior to drinking and allowed to slow-ox. Deep, dark purple, more reminiscent of a cab than a barolo. Oak, vanilla and alcohol on the nose with very little fruit and drying tannins on the palate. Time has not treated this modern barolo well and I doubt this will improve over the coming years.

Tig is one of my historical favorites from Italy, and we opened up a 2004 for a big birthday celebration. Slow-ox for 4 hours. Initially quite reserved with nervous acidity. Seemed to calm down a bit, especially with food. Dark fruit, subtle spice, and some earthiness with a nice finish, this Tig showed well but not as well as previous vintages.
