3/1/23, 9:53 AM - Super helpful TN, thank you. My experience with all my Littorai PN to date has been glorious regret - usually an opened bottle is best on night 2 or 3, which tends to tell me about longevity. Last week had a 2013 Savoy that was a mile better than my last bottle several years ago. I’m tending toward patience on all of them, can’t wait to see where they go.
10/22/22, 5:45 AM - I agree. Based on others’ recent notes about its current approachability, I thought it was worth trying one.
4/6/22, 10:41 AM - Great note, thanks!
7/28/21, 8:18 AM - Awesome and instructive note, thank you!
7/21/21, 6:46 PM - Haven’t had this vineyard from this vintage yet but fwiw their entry Mt Jefferson bottling from 2018 gave me a similar experience early on. Shortly after release the wine was uncharacteristically coarse; 6-12 months later, all settled and harmonious. Perhaps a more pronounced effect with their premium wines.
6/8/21, 8:28 AM - Marked flawed?
5/28/21, 2:10 PM - I always appreciate your notes as we share a fondness for BTF. Are your experiences with this wine the most divergent you’ve had with any BTF PN within a given vintage?
5/27/21, 8:01 PM - That’s a pretty divergent experience from mine recently — ours was intense and juicy but nothing like the sludge you’re describing. Ceritas has replaced bottles (purchased direct from winery) for me in the past, no questions asked.
5/25/21, 11:59 AM - Great note Rich — i love how expressive and distinctive wines from this site can be. Got hooked on the Ceritas 2013 vintage and had a subsequent vintage experience similar to yours here.
3/20/21, 3:43 PM - I haven’t had the 2014 yet but tend to agree Tig is consistently exceptional in the vintages I’ve had. For the money, I have found 95% of the experience at <50% price with Fèlsina’s Fontalloro, which I believe is 100% Sangiovese in most years.
3/5/21, 10:50 AM - Well written, thanks for the note! Agree this stuff is very good for what it is.
2/10/21, 12:06 PM - Hey Dave, I’ve had more Ceritas Chardonnay than memorable Chablis but I don’t think that comparison is apt. I find Heintz to be the most generous of the Ceritas lineup but even with several years of age it’s a multi-night unfurling of layers, if I can resist the urge to deplete a bottle within hours of opening!
1/29/21, 9:49 AM - Tragically we had a similar experience a year ago with this wine. Didn’t seem like a function of time but rather some flaw in bottling or storage. I know we’re not alone — a few commenters of other vintages of Clos desPapes have sworn off the stuff given repeated experiences of bottle variation unacceptable for caliber and price.
1/21/21, 1:51 PM - Sounds similar to my experience a year ago, was your experience over a single day/night or did it have longer to breathe?
1/14/21, 1:01 PM - I had similar bottle variation experience with case direct from winery and two stray bottles from local retail. Initially chalked it up to travel shock, as I found an uncharacteristic coarseness in the earlier few (last fall) but not in the latest ones (within the last month).
9/1/20, 9:16 AM - Appreciate the note BackroadsPDX: the oldest BTF PN I have had is a 13 Sunnyside earlier this year, so not particularly aged but nevertheless still very good and not a dramatic departure from my experience tasting it on-site at BTF pre-release (i.e., still more fruit than earth). We have plenty of 17s and 18s laying down, with lots of miles left in the race!
8/13/20, 1:17 PM - Thanks for this and your other notes, we seem to have similar tastes. I adore BTF but the 17s are puzzling — first vintage I’ve experienced where wines were closed/dulled at and shortly after release (so far we’ve had 17 WV PN and 17 Sunnyside). This note is an interesting contrast with your note on 17 BTF Earth.
1/8/19, 1:13 PM - Same as Bandreas — we unsubscribed last year and redirected Oregon Pinot Noir spend to Cristom and Big Table Farm.
12/16/17, 4:12 PM - Pop and pour, or did you give it some air? I gather from earlier comments there’s substantial bottle variation with this wine.
11/14/17, 12:01 PM - Try the $45 Chardonnay from Big Table Farm, which is excellent every year.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
