White
Thrillingly electric, subtle yet complex, layers of flavour unfold in the glass. White and yellow stone fruit, grapefruit, toasted hazlenuts. Precise, with well integrated acidity, long in the mouth.

My last bottle of this, and ten years after my earlier TN. Aged 25, this still has remarkable freshness and vigour. It's bright and vivid in the glass, deep red though with a fair bit of bricking at the rim. From opening, the perfume has been gorgeous, and it's been developing very nicely in the glass ever since. Blue and black berry fruits and plums. A swirl brings tobacco, leather and mushrooms into play. Also a menthol note. The oak here is beautifully integrated and gives everything a nice, expensive sheen, and a hint of something resinous. Roasted nuts too. Lovely balance on the palate, though the tannins are still pretty robust and call for some rich food to soak them up. Sad to see my last bottle of this go, but it's a wonderful send-off.

Drunk over a few days, this was plushly upholstered and remained fresh, with ripe mulberries and blueberries featuring strongly. Nice balance and energy on the palate, but a slight oiliness muddied the impression. Still, an impressive and tasty wine

Edgy fruit on this, sour cherries, quite tart. Elevated acidity, just within tolerance levels but not entirely integrated. A burnt rubber note as it warmed. Not one I’d feel impelled to revisit.

Unusually mature for an Alboriño, the sobre lias character comes through nicely, with a buttery nose that retains ripe, round fruit, stewed yellow peaches to the fore. Still pronounced acidity on the palate which keeps things lively notwithstanding the rich style of the wine. Nice but not one I’d rush back to.

Quite a stern style of modern Rioja, with pronounced lead pencils underpinning the aromatic, perfumed blue and black fruit. A decent tannic kick, though I felt the high-ish alcohol (14%) manifested in some lack of focus on the palate. Okay value at EUR 17,95 though an M de Cacares at a little less a couple of days ago probably gave more simple pleasure.
Red
A birthday gift, this was a very pretty and expressive baby Barolo, already open for business, with fresh plum and red fruits on the nose, and a pronounced clove spice. Nicely integrated tannins. Lovely. Served slightly chilled on a hot early summer's evening.
Red
A youthful bright purple. Expressive, with sour cherries and crunchy red currants. Interesting undertones of grape skins, also lending a textural element on the palate. Still quite tannic. Something here reminds me of Happy Hour cocktails - tastes you can’t quite recognise and wonder if they really belong. Probably needs a few more years for everything to come together.

The most Burgundian of the Vizcaina 2017s I’ve had to date. Has a cool climate intensity notwithstanding the ripe, lush fruit (more reminiscent of raspberry than the black cherry I’ve found in the other crus). Not the opulence of the Rapalao I had recently, but very classy
Red
Deep dark purple with lush Black Forest gateau aromatics and a velvety texture. My favorite amongst the 2017 Vizcaina crus so far

A bit shy at first, before opening up to offer crisp cassis and black cherries. Identifiably Margaux, though on quite a strict style at this stage in its development. Perhaps a few more years will soften it.

Given the vintage, and that this wasn’t cru classé, this surprised me for its ripe sweet fruit and mouthfilling palate. Tasty, though the aromatics were a bit blurred and this didn’t speak powerfully of Margaux to me

Youthful and vigorous. A mix of red and black fruits, with licorice and beef consommé underpinning. Crunchy. Lacks a bit of grip on the palate and energy on the finish. But pretty nice and in its drinking window

90% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc. 13.5%. Crisp and vivid fruit (cassis, black cherry). Quite herbaceous, grassy. Lead pencils. Ripe and pleasantly mouthfilling. Nice wine, showing well

Takes a bit of aeration to release the sweet strawberry aromatics, with a cool licorice underpinning, something grassy too. Quite austere, which translates from nose to palate. Mouthfilling but lacking that last bit of energy one would be looking for. Decent length.
Red
Tasty. Ripe and full bodied. A bit one-d but drinking well. A tad green later on

Pretty tasty stuff, if not the height of elegance. Ripe fruit and licorice spice: said Pomerol to me. Plenty of mileage left in the tank.

The last of a six, I think, I acquired a few years back - maybe ten years after vintage. Deep color with pronounced bricking at the rim. Tar and black treacle on the nose, lots of wood spice, not a lot of fruit, but some crunchy red currant plus more mellow blue stone and berry fruit. Somewhat muddy aromatics. A slight whiff of VA, hints of fenugreek. Slightly on the acid side of good balance on the palate, but pretty intense, with a pleasant and juicily lingering finish.
Red
Deep color, smoky-leafy nose, with crunchy redcurrant and cranberry, some black currant too. Initially at a cool cellar temperature there was a pronounced fag ash quality, and a bit of a green streak, but there was a nice balance between fruit and acidity and a long juicy finish. Very enjoyable
White
Classy though still in its youth. Delicate oak treatment, soap scented, quite steely on the palate, but with sufficient fruit density to give it balance. Promising.

From bottle. Lovely fruit again on the nose: plums, blueberries, cherries. But an oily texture on the palate took the edge of this for me, perhaps speaking to the 14% ABV

Textbook Pauillac. Classically apportioned, austere. Freshly cut black currant bush, cranberries, lead pencils. Opened out, softened and sweetened, with black cherries alongside the black currant, and some tobacco leaf/cigar box aromas. Round but fresh and juicy in the mouth. Long complex finish. What more could one ask for?

Fresh blackcurrants on the nose - like freshly cut black currant bush. A typical Margaux soft, satin quality. Pastilles, tobacco leaf. Balanced but a bit watery on the finish, though leaves a long lasting sweet impression in the mouth. Another nice 04

Initially a bit tight and ungiving, but warmed up to give an attractive ensemble of cassis, bubblegum, lead pencils and cigar box. Not especially grippy on the palate and faded a bit on the finish, but perhaps just needed a bit more time in the decanter. Nice wine.

Last bottle of 12, to accompany Paco Tapas at Home. Nice bright red, clean and fresh berry fruit on the nose, the vanilla oakiness marking earlier bottles now fully and unobtrusively integrated. Taut and refreshing on the palate, with Burgundian weight and texture, or perhaps an elegant Northern Rhône. Ripe sweet fruit, well balanced, a peppery prickle suggesting this still has plenty of life left in it.

The label on the neck recorded that this went for EUR 13,20 on release, though I recall this came gifted with a decent purchase from the nice folk at Le Torre in Alba. Still a vibrant purple, a nose that seemed to speak more of Barolo than Barbera, with spiced plums and blueberries, but the absence of tannin confirmed its identity. Soft and round, which is not what one of says of Barbera, and lacked the acid cut of the Vajra Bricco delle Viole 1999 to which we then moved, but not at all put in the shade by that grander wine.
Red
Pretty but not the full package I was hoping for. Nice plum fruit with a bit of spice, everything nicely in place, but not delivering the wow factor I anticipated. Still, it went nicely with pheasant ragu

Still youthful, vigorous and assertive. Coal tar powerfully on the nose, with raspberry ripple and violets. Sweet fruit, ripe but very fresh. A green peppery tinge was there at first as it warmed from cellar temperature, disappearing for a time but re-emerging after a couple of hours in the decanter, and just taking the gloss off what was at peak a stunning drinking experience.
White
3/3, bought direct. Deep hay-like color. Quite limey and yeasty at first, but rounding out into something more Burgundian in terms of weight and mouthfeel

Still youthful to the eye, and lots happening on the nose: black cherries, brambles, vanilla, raspberry ripple. Fresh, balanced, though relatively short. After a while there was a balsamic vinegar note that suggested a bit of VA, so perhaps not in pristine condition. Would otherwise have merited a high 80s score. Still quite appealing anyway.

Good color, ripe cassis on the nose, quite plump at first, then lead pencils, a bit of iron, quite smokey. Flavorsome but a bit muddy on the palate, some ripeness but also quite pronounced acidity, quite prominent on the finish. A good effort for 2007, drinking well now, but not one to search out.

Surprisingly ripe and appealing for the vintage while remaining classically styled. Cassis combined with strawberries and cherries on the nose, cut blackcurrant branches, mint. Fresh, cool, precise. The fruit gets a bit muddy on the palate, with a bit of a roasted character. But the balance is good, there’s decent density of flavour and length, and the finish is pleasantly persistent. At peak but no rush to drink.

Last bottle of six. Previous, in its first six or seven years, were quite lean and tight. This has been around the blocks and is perhaps not pristine but it is very tasty. Spiced stewed berries and plums, strawberry hinting at over maturity, tolerable VA, and an utterly beguiling aroma of truffles, more vivid than I’ve experienced before. Quite woody with fenugreek spice. Medium weight but high energy on the palate. Savoury with ripe sweet fruit. Very moreish once one adapts to the flavour world.

My last bottle of six. This was still vigorous and vibrant, lots of blue, red and black fruit on nose and palate, a little bit chunky but winning one over with its sweet fruit and underpinning structure. Very nice wine.

2007 Château Ormes de Pez St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Good bright ruby colour, attractively plush on the nose, ripe fruit, quite assertive on the palate with reasonable balance but just a bit of a greenish tinge. Nice if a little lacking in character and complexity
White - Off-dry
Vivid stone fruit (white peaches, greengages…), hints of mace and nutmeg, an attractive streak of barley sugar. Lovely
Red
A superior Nebb rather than a baby Barolo. A bit foursquare. Perhaps needs a bit more time
Red
A deep vibrant purple notwithstanding its 16 age, aromatic, with raspberries, plums, violets and a light smokiness, none of the iron/liver notes one can get with extended ageing. Nicely balanced, certainly not too ripe, indeed quite classical. Very satisfying. Needed a couple of hours in the decanter to open up and show its stuff
Red
Aromatic, with attractively sour plum and kirsch notes. A bit dumb on the palate on Day 1 but showing more on Day 2, with a nice balance between the sweetness of the fruit and the relatively elevated acidity, and a pleasing lightness of touch
White
Quite a funky, lees-dominated nose at first, but blew off to reveal a quite Burgundian profiled wine, quite full bodied but taut, with attractive fruit and floral notes (white peaches, lime flowers)

My last bottle of a case of this, I think, and it's excellent. I don't drink much white Burgundy these days but this is everything it should be and perhaps more. It's appealingly green-tinged; clean and refreshing at the same time as nutty and savoury; hinting at richness though light on its feet; not fruity but with attractive fruit components, white peach especially. I like this very much
