My last bottle of six. This was still vigorous and vibrant, lots of blue, red and black fruit on nose and palate, a little bit chunky but winning one over with its sweet fruit and underpinning structure. Very nice wine.
Red
2007 Château Les Ormes de Pez St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Good bright ruby colour, attractively plush on the nose, ripe fruit, quite assertive on the palate with reasonable balance but just a bit of a greenish tinge. Nice if a little lacking in character and complexity
White - Off-dry
Vivid stone fruit (white peaches, greengages…), hints of mace and nutmeg, an attractive streak of barley sugar. Lovely
Red
A superior Nebb rather than a baby Barolo. A bit foursquare. Perhaps needs a bit more time
Red
A deep vibrant purple notwithstanding its 16 age, aromatic, with raspberries, plums, violets and a light smokiness, none of the iron/liver notes one can get with extended ageing. Nicely balanced, certainly not too ripe, indeed quite classical. Very satisfying. Needed a couple of hours in the decanter to open up and show its stuff
Red
Aromatic, with attractively sour plum and kirsch notes. A bit dumb on the palate on Day 1 but showing more on Day 2, with a nice balance between the sweetness of the fruit and the relatively elevated acidity, and a pleasing lightness of touch
White
Quite a funky, lees-dominated nose at first, but blew off to reveal a quite Burgundian profiled wine, quite full bodied but taut, with attractive fruit and floral notes (white peaches, lime flowers)
Red
2004 Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese (view label images)
Last of three, I think. Nice typical Sangiovese perfume and mouthfeel. Furry tannins. A bit rustic but pleasant

A good vibrant colour and a youthful vigorous nose. Decent flavour profile but a bit lacking in complexity. Still very tannic so maybe just at an in-betweeny stage?

Somewhat disappointing. Quite syrupy sweet and lacking in delineation. Maybe just an awkward phase. Judgement withheld for now

My last bottle of a case of this, I think, and it's excellent. I don't drink much white Burgundy these days but this is everything it should be and perhaps more. It's appealingly green-tinged; clean and refreshing at the same time as nutty and savoury; hinting at richness though light on its feet; not fruity but with attractive fruit components, white peach especially. I like this very much
Red
2007 Château Talbot St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
A classic St Julien and very attractive notwithstanding the vintage. Compared with d'Armailhac 07, tasted a week before, this was redder in colour (rather than purple) and lighter/more fragrant on both nose and palate, but still had attractive sweet fruit, lent extra complexity by aromas of tobacco leaf and lead pencil (the latter much less pronounced than in the d'Armailhac). Lovely
Red
2007 Château La Pointe Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Decent colour and plenty of sweet, attractive fruit on the nose - black cherries to the fore but with a nice sour cherry component lending further complexity. Nice weight and balance in the mouth and good length
Red
2007 Château d'Armailhac Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Good colour and surprisingly full flavoured for the vintage. In fact, it conveys the bold, full-bodied yet classic house style very well with pungent cassis and lead pencil aromatics on the nose. Generous and nicely balanced in the mouth, with decent length. A pleasant surprise.

Last of a case of 12 that I feared I'd left too long before liberating from storage. Fortunately, I had no reason to be apprehensive. Consistently with previous bottles, this was still a vibrant purple-red, creamy dark cherry and plum on the nose, something that made me think sous bois, fresh and appetising on the palate. Still drinking really well and all you could hope it to be, really.
Red
Another lovely bottle, still in full fruit, no sign of tiring

Euro 23,95. This Ribera del Duero didn’t speak loudly of Tinto Pais and I know earlier vintages mixed in other grape varieties, so I’d be pleased to know what went in here. It is a distinctive and very appealing wine, that spikes my interest notwithstanding the relatively elevated price point. Vibrant purple robe, attractive fresh fruit aromas ranging from strawberry to bilberry, clean and precise in the mouth, opening up nicely after a slightly austere opening. Nice.

Euro 14,95. A blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Deep purple. Vivid and fresh mulberry fruit, sharpened with cassis. On the palate though, it’s a bit too much, quite oily, and the 15% leaves a bit of a burn and cuts short the sweet fruit, leaving a slightly bitter finish.
Red
Still youthful in colour but beginning to show some pleasing development in bottle. Cool, fresh and elegant, with sumptuous black cherry fruit. The oak fully integrated on the nose and evident only in the Bordeaux-like texture of the wine and its impressive structure. Noticeable tannins but smooth and rounded. Very attractive, though a slight whiff of VA was perhaps a warning sign for the future

White - Off-dry
[02 14] A complex nose and a palate that just makes you go, Wow! Explosive, sweet but fresh. **
White - Off-dry
[04 00] Held back in the cellars to mature, this is now quite extraordinary. The seductive lanolin nose doesn't quite prepare for the explosive impact on the palate. It's sweet but beautifully integrated. Lovely. ***

Youthful appearance. Light and pale red, but bright and vibrant. Strawberry syrup, sandalwood, menthol and wood smoke on the nose. Wonderful purity and transparency. Lots of complexity over time, subtle rather than in your face, with impressions of fig, christmas pudding, frangipane and sour cherry. Initially tightly coiled but impressively structured and full flavoured. The tannins are very present but finely textured. Extremely long finish, lingering sweetly in the mouth

Youthful, vigorous Barbaresco, but already giving pleasure. Everything seems in place for good development in the bottle too. 14%

Young Nebbiolo can taste a bit forced to me and this is one of those bottles. Quite fruity, but one dimensional as yet, and a bit uncouth

A very pretty young Barolo, traditionally made, with wonderful transparency. Med red. Beautiful aromatics, with strawberries and plums, a lovely touch of sourness, something a bit syrupy or port-like too, though without any loss of freshness. It's immediately accessible on the palate, with the fruit underpinned by liqourice and tar. The flavours fill the mouth, and there's a light dusting of tannins, but also great freshness. Long dreamy finish. Not sure what sort of drinking window this will have, but it is delicious now.
Red
A very appetizing wine. Quite light in color, certainly reddish rather than purple, beginning to brick around the rim. Aromatic, clean and fresh. Nice secondary development on the fruit; attractive liquorice underpinning. Quite tame tannins, well balanced, and overall a very nice Serralunga Barolo.

At Grappolo d’Oro, Monforte. Darkly colored and immediately fragrant on opening. Nice dark fruit and spice on this, but quite prominent bitterness (citric peel, cranberry). It felt heavy (unsurprising given its 15% alcohol) and a tad oily too. I stopped enjoying before the end of the bottle.

Terroirs and Vintages of Barolo: This contrasted wonderfully with the Monvigliero tasted alongside, even if it couldn't quite match its quality. From Monforte d'Alba - more specifically, the Eastern slopes of the ridge that runs north from Monforte to Castiglione Falletto, facing across the valley to Serranlunga - this had a notably darker colour, with plums, spice, liquorice and menthol on the nose and a pleasing minerality on the palate, though it was perhaps surprisingly a bit more open-knit than the Monvigliero and less structured and intense. Certainly very enjoyable now and with a decent drinking window ahead.

Terroirs and Vintages of Barolo: It was great to begin the tasting with two wines by the same producer but from very different parts of the region. Monvigliero, at the north of the ridge that runs from Novello north through La Morra and on to Verduno (in which township is lies) is reputed to produce fragrant aromatic wines of great finesse and this amply met the profile. Pale red in colour, but intense in its aromatics, with red cherry and strawberry to the fore, this was fresh and joyously appetising, though with real backbone too. It's got a good life ahead of it, but is already enjoyable now.

Last bottle of this and sadly it was very badly corked (the first and only corked bottle in my six-pack)

A stupendous bottle of Monprivato, possibly my last of this vintage; much, much better than the previous, which was slightly disappointing. This had extraordinary aromatic complexity, with waves of blue and blackberry fruit, menthol, sandalwood and more. Refined on the palate, with nicely resolved though still appreciable tannin. Lively and fresh; perfectly in balance. Long, long finish. Captivated until the last drop. Hard to fault, though there were perhaps moments when a hint of coarseness crept in.
Red
Quite big and bold, with ripe blue and blackberry fruit, though not overdone. A bit foursquare but attractive
Red
Nicely mature but still early maturity. Fresh and subtle but with lovely sweetness and purity of fruit and a delicate spice

My last bottle I think. This was still in full fruit, but had softened and sweetened nicely. The oak is apparent more in the Bordeaux-like structure than in the aromatics. A dark-toned fruit palette with beautiful purity - essence of cassis after a while in decanter (think freshly cut blackcurrant bush). Added complexity from some tar and menthol notes. Quite sweet on the palate, but nicely balanced by the well-integrated and unobtrusive acidity. Quite a glossy wine, but also quite delicious.

A good dark colour, still a purple tinged red, with some slight bricking towards the rim. After a slightly dull start, this opened up nicely in the glass to give off clean, fresh dark fruit aromatics (black cherry, elderberry, blackcurrant pastille) with a strong but attractive herb and green peppercorn overlay. Quite savoury. Also a nice steeliness, which had one thinking towards Barolo. The palate is rather gentle and unassuming, nothing out of place but lacking a bit of vigour, with just a hint of oiliness there too. I find the Umathum single vineyard wines can be a bit austere in their youth, but this has aged nicely, though at the expense of its youthful vigour.

Provides a lot of immediate gratification but I feel it's at an in-betweeny state. There's still plenty of upfront pear and white peach, but it's developing the beeswax character of aged Riesling, with saline and umani notes. there's a teeny hint of sugary sweetness that's not fully integrated, but that will come with time I think. Otherwise, this has great balance and poise, with the Klaus's tendency towards the ascetic nicely offset by a generous Dionysian character
