This pours medium straw in the glass with moderate yet fine effervescence. The nose is only modestly expressive but what is there is very appealing to my palate. The nose is of vanilla wafer, spring flowers, faint pastry, mint, asian pear, white peach, and lightly chalkly elements. The palate features a lovely texture with optimal (to my palate) pressure. The dosage is just little high for me at 8 g/l but not too troubling. The finish is not terribly long replaying the fruit and floral elements of the nose, closing on chalk. All in all this is an enjoyable Champagne that is an excellent value at $43 CAD. Positives are true champagne character and optimal pressure, with drawbacks are slightly elevated dosage, light expression with modest complexity, and lack of autolytic character.

Bottle in perfect condition, perfect fill, perfect cork. Bottle opened 7 hours in advance and checked every 2h, which is what it needed (4-6h is good if filled mid-neck).
Very nice color, pure shining red with discrete garnet borders, with medium+ intensity.
Nose is a bit unpleasant, making one doubt if the bottle is faulty, but it's not. Hard to identify much as it's not well defined, if you get past the old, wet cardboard smell, you identify some red fruit and the classic aged Bordeaux palette: leather, mushroom, wet forest...
Taste is far better than the nose, which is pleasant, but here again, it's "classic old Bordeaux" with hints of mushrooms and leather, unfortunately, medium-low intensity and short finish. One of the quality I noticed is the well-balanced acidity, it's really present and improving the wine.
The wine is not bad at all. But it's nothing special, there is no vintage/château personality, it's "just" an old Bordeaux, so it's good enough for me to drink with a nice meat, but I wouldn't serve this to wine-loving friends

6/12/22, 11:55 AM - While I realize there seems to be a lot of bottle variation with the 1995 Chateau Pontet-Canet, I do get the feeling your bottle may have been flawed. I experienced TCA with a previous bottle of this and your description of "wet cardboard smell" screams TCA to me. Perhaps flaw may have contributed to your experience with the wine.

I've been studying (mostly drinking!) wine intently for about four years now, but this is just second tasting note on here. I wanted to write a note about this one because it is special. It was given to me to drink on my 30th birthday, and I loved it. I'm still obviously a beginner when it comes to tasting notes, but I'll give it a shot...

The first thing I noticed upon pouring the wine was the color. I've had maybe a handful of wines of this age and quality, and the brownish color around the edges and faded brickish color in the center is unmistakeable.

And then - the smell. I'm getting to the point where I can somewhat identify the nose of a great wine, but I'm really bad at describing why I know it's great. This wine has that scent. Leather, cherry, and forrest floor were three descriptors me and my girlfriend Roxanne (aka BeaujolaisJolie on here!) could come up with. Bottom line - we knew we were in for a treat.

As for the taste - rich, smooth, incredibly complex. Again, I'm working on my language here, but it was just clear in drinking this that we were working with a different level wine than we're used to.

If anyone is considering purchasing, I highly recommend. And if any CellarTracker'ins out there have also enjoyed this wine, I'd love to hear another point of view!

In the bouquet red fruits and some pleasant barnyard impressions. On the palate red forest fruits, some spiciness and earth. Pleasant acidity, slightly sticky tannin and pleasant bitterness in the finish. Not extremely complex, but certainly a focused and good wine. Early maturity now and no hurry at all. For a 2004 really good. 89 -90+

4/4/15, 6:58 AM - I've been surprised by these wines given how bad some 2004 have been. These are drinking well and I'm glad I took a chance and bought some on clearance. Thanks for the notes!

Had an unappealing note not unlike corked that never dissipated even over several hours. The unappealing aspect was confirmed by a taster with no knowledge of the details of this wine

2/22/15, 9:17 AM - I remember there being a controversy when this wine was released, regarding tca infecting the entire release due to taint at the winery. My bottle years ago had a slight tca note.
