Clear red. Heady aromas with deep black cherry and a whiff of surmaturite and liqueur. Ripe, sappy, round, and powerful. The acidity is sound, and the minerality shows up at the end, along with broad tannins. Not much in the way of complexity at this point. This is freakishly ripe and large scaled for Nebbiolo, and it is clear that these are early days for this wine. Will it ever pare down, lose its baby fat, and gain more structure and finesse? It reminds me of some 2007 southern Rhône reds where I had similar reservations about the balance. More Amarone than Barolo. Quite a mouthful that my dining companions enjoyed more than I did, but maybe I'm being too harsh regarding this hedonistic wine.

5/10/18, 1:18 AM - I had this wine last year and felt the same way. A little too sweet and confected for my tastes.

PnP. Blackberry, woodsmoke, after 30 mins or so some surprising honey - almost like a rich old sweet wine - mahogany. Palate becomes richer and more concentrated with time, still mainly blackberry fruit, bramble, herbal notes, fine tannins. Some tartness from the vintage. Smooth but fresh. Long. As with the nose plenty of evidence of the oak. Even though this is young, and the parts need longer to come together, there is already so much pleasure in this wine, especially after an hour+ of air, I can't stop drinking it! For those of us who are drinkers and not investors, this is why Maxime - and many of the other young Burgundy Winemakers who are less known - are so exciting. While styles are different - some are min sulphur, some not, some (carefully chosen) new oak, some not, some whole bunch / stems, some not etc - all of them aim to produce wines that people will love drinking. Wines that will give pleasure throughout their drinking windows whatever the vintage has given them. Wines that make you smile. Rant over. Fabulous wine. Enjoyed throughout but needed the hour+ for both nose and palate to really start showing well.

8/10/17, 7:05 PM - Couldn't agree more. Maxime is producing wines that deliver so much immediate pleasure but which I think also have capacity for aging. Buying all I can!

PnP. After the very good bottle of '13 Duroche Les Jeunes Roi on Monday night, I was keen to try another wine from his range. This wine was less expressive than the Les Jeunes Roi but nonetheless possessed a similar purity and transparency in the wine. Had more depth with some notes of earth and spice. Already very fine but could definitely do with a couple of years more bottle age. This is definitely a producer to watch!

PnP. This was very impressive for a village level wine. Soaring floral aromatics, sappy red fruit and crystalline purity, this was so approachable and open but yet has the stuffing to develop further. Revisited it 2hrs after opening and the wine had mellowed and filled out a little. Delicious now but has upside over the next decade.

Dinner with friends (At home): Decanted for 3hrs, poured back into the bottle and left to stand in bottle for a further 4hrs. What a gorgeous nose of ripe blackcurrants, tobacco, lead pencil and vanillin. On the palate, a wine of power- dense and concentrated dark fruit. Persistent finish lingered on for some time. However, this is just too young and thus I have refrained from penciling in any rating. Still a bit monolithic with the wall of tannins overwhelming the traces of subtle flavours lying latently in the wine. Needs at least 5-10 more years to start showing what it can do. So much potential but more patience required.

3/31/15, 7:04 PM - Thanks Yamadori. Some of these LB's take such a long time to come around. Tasted blind at 10yrs old one might think it was just 2-3yrs old! Had the '04 LB recently though and that is drinking beautifully right now.

Yet no one you has posted a comment/review on this wine has made any comment on excessive sediments. Interesting.

4/12/14, 9:21 PM - Hi, the bottle I had late last year did have a fair amount of sediment although I didnt think too much of it at the time. I thought it might have been particular to that specific bottle. We decanted carefully and as far as i'm aware, it was not noticeably detrimental to the drinking experience.

Decanted for 1hr. Very classically styled bordeaux. Still tastes young. Typical notes of blackcurrant, cedar and tobacco. Elegant and finely balanced with relatively well integrated tannins. Let down somewhat by a shorter finish. Did not evolve significantly over a 2hr dinner. Enjoyable now but still has a decade or more left in it.
