2014 Once & Future Wine Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard Calistoga
Had this about a year ago and it was delicious but very young. Decanted this one six hours before trying and it was completely shut down, the wine in the glass smelled like it was ten feet away, almost no flavor at all. After ten hours in the decanter it was still the same. Poured the rest back in the bottle and tried two days later and only slightly more open. I would try these on release but after that definitely hold for a long time.

New Savoie superstar. This wine is out of this world. Could be confused for many great burgundies. I need more!

This had that nice roasty toasty thing going on from the get go. Blue fruit, hazelnuts, and then later some green pepper (but not overtly). As far as 100% PV's go, this one is pretty freaking awesome. Probably another few years at peak.

5/5/18, 2:01 PM - Thanks! Considering opening one this weekend -- any guidance on how much air you gave it? Was it pop n pour, decanted awhile, or drank over several hours from the bottle?

I consider this a refined wine, however the texture and finish are not characteristic of 95 point wine. I value depth, texture, and finish over refinement hence my ranking of 92 reflects this in scoring this wine. I am also not sure more time will benefit this wine given how it's structured, it may add a bit of weight over the next couple years, but not substantially.

Overall this wine is good but far from epic.

2016 Arnot-Roberts Rosé California Touriga Nacional
golden salmon pink-orange. Nose waxy stone fruits, bright. Palate with strong peach flavors, good minerality, bright acidity. Wonderful chilled but gets more expressive as it warms to room temp. Good with seafood pasta but imagine that it would be refreshing on its own. 90 pts

2004 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese
Had this at Felix with a full on pasta meal. The pairing was great. High in acid. Tannins seemed to have faded away, still a bit left though. Got a beautiful nose, a bit floral which I don't usually get in a Brunello. Color was still quite dark/opaque. Definitely could get some tertiary aged notes like leathery cedar on the palate. Still a bit of fruit on the palate as well, that typical cherry you get with Brunello. Medium bodied and pretty evolved at this point.

Had a small portion left in the glass, it got oxidized quite quickly which makes me believe this shouldn't be decanted and only slow-ox'ed instead. Time to drink up!

9/4/17, 8:05 PM - First of all, glad to see your notes! Very helpful -- especially since we dine at Felix frequently and can try this there! You should definitely continue to write notes! Sounds like this wine is in a perfect place to enjoy, still some apparent fruit, softened tannins, lively but open on the nose.

Delicate and urethral-the way a great wine should be. Have to think about the nuances of the multiple dimensions- honey suckle flowers combined with lemon and lime nose give way to orange blossom mouth feel that reminds one of Florida in the Early summer. A clean and refreshing palate that entices more of the refreshing clean flavors of citrus and muted kiwi. This wine is past its time, but is enjoyable for what it is…

From an overtly consumer-friendly negociant of some sort, as far as I can tell. The label lists the flavors (that's not so unusual) but it even has an infographic to point out on a scale of 1-5 useful parameters like acidity, minerality, tannins and even complexity. Ok, why not? It's not going to hurt anyone, although they bury the alcohol in type so small you need a magnifying glass.

The wine is a light translucent red, with an immediately inviting red berry nose-fresh, appealing, and totally not meriting 3.5 Harvey Balls for complexity, although you might find a little herbal essence in the corners. That's fine, it's not what I was looking for anyway. Really attractive on the palate, again, quite light (zero Harvey ball for oak), with a lithe structure, three harvey balls for acidity, and that delicious berry fruit. Fun as an aperitif or summer quaffer, assuming 5" of snow on the first day of spring doesn't preclude summer ever arriving.

Regarding the wine, I have to say thanks for the detailed notes!

2011 Mas Doix Priorat Salanques Grenache Blend, Grenache
A brilliant experiment from the warm 2011 vintage, this seductive blend of 65% Garnacha, 25% Cariñena and 10% Syrah is ripe with aromas of red & black fruits, herbs & spices (garrigue, crocus, nora, vanilla), freshly-ground coffee beans, and moist tobacco. The rich and concentrated palate expands with extracted black cherry, boysenberry, raspberry, smashed-plum, and licorella flavors. Jubilant acids balance silky tannins, and a long, dry-ving (sic) finish. Salanques is the second wine from Mas Doix; however, in 2011 the grand vin was not produced. So, some of their best fruit bl/ended here. 15% abv (no heat). QPR+ Drink or hold.
  • BarryPaulPrice commented:

3/21/17, 6:12 PM - Noticed use of (sic) which suggests this was copied from another source and the misspelling was left in. Are these the user's notes or are you quoting something/someone?

After reading many tasting notes I am convinced that many wine drinkers do not understand different styles in wine. In our group of wine lovers there are people like like the barn, the funk, the earth, and dislike the fruit , the jam, the Candy, and some of us is quite the oposite. I have many high-end Bordeaux of excellent year like 2005 and so far what I have tasted is not my style but I don´t bash the wines. It´s like complaining that a Subaru WRX STI has a very stiff suspensión when it is a rally car ! Some wines are sweet and over the top like the Caymus and the Mollydooker and some prefer austerity like wines from Burgundy or Bordeaux. We must keep in sight that Caymys and Mollydookers sell out quickly and they are making tons of cash and that my friends is what I call a success. Now the wine : Sweet, jamy, delicious. The wine is very much like the 2012 versión and it needs/demands a couple of years so it can come into its own respecting their style. 2013 is a Little bit better in my opinión. For $65 is a fairly por QPR, I wish the wine was $50, but the wine is a success and the Price is only going up.

11/24/16, 11:19 PM - They understand. They do not like that style. So they are making sure the voice their disapproval in words and voting it down in the rating they feel it really deserves.

Vanilla extract, chocolate vodka liqueur, sweet chocolate truffles, vanilla schnapps, and bon-bons.

Just my opinion: Undrinkable and an utter disaster. I love many "styles" of wine, but this stopped being a "style" of wine about six cups of sugar ago; if I want a dessert liqueur infused with vanilla ice cream, I'll order that specifically. Completely overdone and a disappointment of a Cabernet. Overworked to the point that the flavors came off grossly artificial. No specific varietal character; no sense of discernible terroir; no layered complexity. Just an alcohol-infused melted jaw breaker of a "wine."

The SS at least has some semblance of character and refinement. The SS is opulent and rich, yes, but this standard Cabernet is just a drunken bachelorette party bus cocktail. If you're the kind of person who drinks wine with ice in your glass, or puts Hershey's syrup in your Cabernet to make it pair with your chocolate mousse, then you will absolutely love this wine.

For me, this wine just needs a rubbery bright red cherry on top of it and some whipped cream.

11/24/16, 11:13 PM - I just had a Thanksgiving dinner with a case of this (we drank 10 bottles of it between eight adults) and I can say it was candied, overly simplified for an American (mainstream) palate. It was fucking ODIOUS but well made if that makes any sense at all. I didn't bother bringing my To Kalon, Beckstoffer, Dr. Crane, or Palmaz stuff I considered bringing that would have fallen on unappreciative palates. The Caymus is simple, too sweet, and I dare say it tastes like adulterated (as in, YES, it tastes like additives are not integrated but added to the wine). This may appeal to some. And may sell more. Yes, the fruit is good and the winemaking is competent but they've marred what could have been a more REAL wine not a candy wine. Still, manages 91 on basis of pedigree, fruit, skill... but loses out on the sweet fruit tootsie roll NON-integrated bullshit. Come on Caymus, stop pandering to the masses. You're better than this.

Sweet, smooth, soft, oaky, crowd pleaser. Tasted at B-21. I won't buy it.
  • BarryPaulPrice commented:

11/24/16, 10:48 PM - Exactly. Came from dinner party where 10 bottles of Caymus were drank (plus one Pahlmeyer Jayson 2014 and one Merry Edwards 2014 Russian River Pinot Noir), because of this crowd-pleasing quality. But, to me, it's not as good as a 2014 Jayson Pahlmeyer red which is less plush, less sweet, less ostentatious, less simple, and far more balanced, complex and interesting.
