Majestic Wine UK £9.99 6 mix promo price September 2020

AOP Limoux, Chardonnay

Notes from 2nd tasting, vac pumped in fridge over night.

This 2019 seemed more intense and interesting than the 2018. Interesting nose, flavours in mouth better/longer/more attractive than the 2018. Impressive value for money.

N.....rich oak, some vanilla, butterscotch, peach, banana, medium intensity.

C....straw, medium body

T.....almonds, quince, apple, lemon curd, creamy texture, decent acid balance, med+ body, a charming freshness, surprising length for this price bracket, both a Foodie and a Quaffer, nice lilt at the end. Off-dry.

VFM?.....cost £9.99 but feels £15+ . Bargain, buying more of the '19.

Coteaux D’aix en Provence AOP

Blimey, Dry means Dry! Does it what. Lively acid, tannins surprisingly mouth-puckering - though not annoying. Peaches, delicate strawberry, well-made dry Rose’. Nice flavour lilt at end. Some power here. It’s pale colour suggests it’ll be another insipid boring Provence Rose’, but it’s miles better than that.

VFM?....bargain, will buy again.

Limoux AOP

N....zilch, a touch of oak.

T....wood and butter, feels more like a 1980s New Zealand chardonnay than a contemporary French one. Fresh acid, decent essence, some minerals, limestone and wet stone, alc is a tad high/warm, floury tannins, lemon pith, crunchy almonds, ends med-dry. Drink up, seems to be ready already.

Bought Exel Wines, Perth UK, £13.50 July 2020

Excellent value for money White Burgundy, subtle and brooding but definite class here.

N....faint, not at all intense, hint of dusty yard/summer earth.

T...medium body, some earthy limestone and chalk, sustained but gentle length, cellaring will see that get better. Quietly classy. Wood, fruit, hint of toffee, maybe a tad too much oak at the minute. Near dry, not properly dry.

Village ‘Hand Harvested’ label. Bought The Wine Society UK £9.95

Bargain. Not the most elegant Pinot out of New Zealand but for sheer simple quality Quaffing, an utter bargain.

Best had lightly chilled if for a summer’s day lunch. (Yes, there’s a hint of Gamay about it.)

Very ripe fruit, crunchy tannins, finishes sappy Dry, not at all complex but wonderfully splendidly drinkable. Light body. Drink up before the meagre acid that’s there fades completely, I’m guessing KR doesn’t intend you to cellar this. New Zealand’s best value ‘Party’ Pinot? Probably

90 today, cellar potential of 92.

Sealed with a cork in yellow wax.

The Domaine Huet of SA? Feels like it. Classy South African Chenin in a (very) dry style, a Foodie wine. Complex, interesting, tons of personality. Way too young at 3 years, massive cellar potential. Won’t touch another 2017 until 2024.

N....rich opulent nose, seductive. Sweet oak, stewed apple, buttery.

Contracted producer for the 2017 is Cotice Citra.

The 2015 of this wine was a much better bottle. This 2017 was a boring fruit bomb almost out of balance in terms of acid/fruit/alcohol. Not actually faulty, though, just too simple and boring.

Rich red wine without any elegance. Juicy and simple as a party wine but even for the modest price of £9.00 you could probably do better. 2015 very good, 2017 much less so.

N...not much, which wasn't a good start. A little peach and wood and vanilla. Faint.

C.....light gold. Looks solid med' body

T.....charming peach and cream, lively acid, this was my 2nd bottle of this 2018 inside 2 weeks, and I don't know why but this one seemed to have better concentration and tension. (It's probably me.) Decent core and structure, ends almost dry with a crisp lilt. Plenty of personality here, peach skin, yellow plums, a hint of banana/wood, some passion fruit and lemon. Interesting mouth-feel.

VFM?.....buy again, easily worth £18.50. Research suggested 2018 in NZ was a ''difficult'' vintage, but 2019 is near-perfect, so I can't wait for the 19s to arrive.

NB: This is not their Organic Viognier.

88-89/100

Sound wine for this price, I would have liked it drier and with more lively acid - I expected it to drink like that at only 1 yr old - but that's just my preference. Asides from that it's a quality Quaffer.

N....whiff of ripe quince

C....straw, looks med+ body

Bought Exel Wines, Perth UK, approx £23.00 July 2020

Feels like it will cellar into a 93-94/100 wine.

No Cab' Franc at all in the 2016 blend. Blend is 3 grapes only: Cab' Sav', Merlot, Malbec, all from Gimblett Gravels triangle sites, Hawke's Bay, NZ.

Rich red wine with furry tannins, long flavours of dark chocolate, a hint of coffee/mocha, dark black fruits rather than red, a tad smokey, ends almost Dry. Good length. Classy. Drinking well - as a Foodie style - at 4 yrs old but nothing near mature. Maybe at 8 yrs, I'd guess, maybe won't scream "Food, please" by then.

VFM?....Feels £30+, cost approx £23.00. Good value. I wonder if a £23.00 Claret would be this good?

N....buttery oak, toffee, roasted hazlenut, med+ intensity, charming

C....advanced straw

T....ripe apple, oak, toffee, quince, more chalky/limestone minerals than I was expecting for a sub-£20 white burgundy; near-dry, acid sitting nicely right now at 3 yrs old, brooding powerful core here; drink as quality Quaffer or Foodie style, it covers both. Not mature.

C....no tawny edge yet, deep red/black

T.....med-dry in style, lots happening here: rich black fruit, some semi-sweet wood, smokey, savoury, baccy, long warm flavours, soft furry tannins, wonderfully drinkable, nice tension of acid v fruit. Plenty of cellar potential. A 93/100 wine maybe?

screw cap, tasted well chilled, not decanted.

Outstanding value for money in this Kumeu River 2018 'Village' Hand Harvested chardonnay, their lowest label. God knows how they bang it out for £11.00. Hawke's Bay and West Auckland fruit. If the oak was a tad lighter I'd have marked this 91. Drink up now, at just 2 yrs old the acid's fresh and lively, there's plenty of fruit, nice long flavours, heaps of simple charm, my only gripe is just a touch too much oak for my preferred style. Is med-dry rather than proper dry.

N....some sweet wood, some peaches and cream, toast/bread, fresh and med+ intensity. A good start.

Decent value-for-money Rose drinking very well at just 1 yr old - as is intended - with heaps of class and attractive flavours, and even some complexity. Ends near-dry. Will buy again. A modern new-wave Rose, million miles away from the old boring insipid Rose' from Provence. Superb example of a wine that's both a Foodie and a Quaffer.

C....pale pink, looks light body

N....blanched peeled almonds, rose water, pink rose petals, though no real intensity

T..... bigger mouth-feel that it's appearence suggested, juicy exciting acidity, grapefruit pulp and grapefruit zest, good concentration, this is serious wine with plenty of personality: crisp red apples, touch of strawberry, tart pineapple, furry tannins, nice lilt at the end. Made in near-dry style.

VFMoney?.....feels worth £20, cost was £14.99. Good VFM, will buy their 2019 again, drink young and fresh.

Bought Majestic UK approx £14.99

Appellation D'Origine Protegee Cotes de Provence

Well chilled, popped n poured

Drink up while the acid's fresh and lively. Very classy Rose, light-bodied but plenty of charm, personality and long flavours, ends near-dry. Even some saline/wet oyster shell minerality.

C....pale pink, looks light-bodied

N....low intensity crushed red/orange apples, some marzipan, pink rose petals

T....body mouth-feel seems bigger than light; saline minerality with some earthy limestone keeps coming back; tart lychee, crisp apple, tart pineapple, ripe strawberry mush, a little ripe raspberry, soft furry tannins, lemon pith, lovely balance and some elegance, plenty of class here, subtle but sustaining flavours, long enough to be noted. Ends near-dry. Drink up, made to be drinking very well at 1 yr old.

VFMoney?.....£14.99 cost but feels £20, on a wine list this would be popular even at £30, defo' buy this 2019 again. $14.99 for a 92/100 wine is pretty much a bargain.

Bought Marks & Spencer supermarket, UK, £7.00,
bottled at Azienda Santa Barbara, near Jesi in Marche, Italy; M&S winemaker Jeneve Williams

Value-for-money quality Quaffer with plenty of personality, costs £7.00 feels like worth £12.00. Ends near-dry. I'd buy it again.

Well chilled, popped n poured.

C....pale, body more light than medium

N....hint of apple skin, not intense

T....soft tannins, earthy limestone/wet stoney character, solid lemon pith, green apples, sour pear and some pear skin, unripe or sour/tart (but in a good way) nectarine, ends off-dry. Not especially powerful or concentrated/long-flavoured, but still manages to be an well-made attractive Quaffer.

Back label boll*cks..."pear, tropical, floral, complex and crisp, an elegant wine..." Well, didn't strike me as especially elegant, though decent it is; nor is it ''complex''; ''tropical''? Not for me. But the Pear was there, I'd agree that.

Drink up, it's drinking very well at 2 yrs old and probably not going to get any better.

VFMoney?....very gd VFM, will buy again - in reportedly good vintages.

Tesco supermarket UK £9.00, an own-label wine but made for them by Maison Arthur Metz in Alsace, the 'Finest' label is Tesco's top end level.

91-92/100

Tasted well chilled, 6-7c, popped n poured.

Bargain. This wine felt like a £15+ wine. Classy for a supermarket own-label wine.

C....gd straw, looks med+ body

N....rose petals, rose water, lychee, only medium intensity

T....floury/pithy tannins, med-H mouth feel, very gd essence, nice wet stone/pebble/slate minerals but not intense; drizzled lemon juice on ripe pineapple, apples, marzipan, ground almonds; some power, acid is still there but not thrilling, drink up before it fades. Not especially dry, but who cares? No flabby clumsy fruit-bomb, this. Drink up, can't see it getting any better, drinking very well at 2 yrs old.

VFMoney?.....outstanding bargain, this 2018. Probably worth twice it's £9.00 retail price.

NB: am writing up this 2015 wine from a dinner in 2018, the wine at that time being 3 yrs old.

Looking at the back label, this appears to be a UK supermarket Marks and Spencer label wine made under exclusive contract to M&S by Rod McDonald in New Zealand.

Decanted half hour

Label says fruit is from the ''old riverbed'' vineyards, Hawke's Bay.

C....youthful light to med body

N....big! lots of fruit, red/black, some wood, baccy, some tar, some intensity

T....very much made in a Dry style; med body; long sustained flavours; warm alc; gentle agreeable tannins; not mature (at 3 yrs old) but is settled and drinking very well.

VFM?....feels £16 a fair price. Will buy again in gd years.

NB: my bottle was a Marks and Spencer wine, made for M&S by Yealands Estate under contract, 'Single Block Series R3, Awatere Valley, Pinot Noir'

This was much better on the 2nd day. On opening - popped and poured, no decanter time - a decent Marlb' Pinot Noir but rather simple with no complexity or real personality. Won't be buying again.

C....bright

N....impressive: big red/black fruits, some oak; some intensity

T....light to med body; good acid balance to the fruit; some length, ends near-dry. Too simple.

2nd day it was softer, fuller, seemed richer fruit though the acid was still balancing it; no herby/bramble complexity here nor forest floor, but good fruit all the same. Can only say it needs proper decant with prolonged swirling or left over-night to air, even then still only a 87/100 wine for me.

VFM?....feels £10

Bought Majestic Wine UK online £9.99 for 6 Mix price

Mendoza VABN, made for Majestic at Bodega SA BGA, Lujan De Cuyo, Mendoza.

Very good Malbec for this price, and at this early point in the cellar. Will buy more of this 2018. Bargain. Out-performed expectations but will be even better at 4-5 yrs old, not 2. Opened too early. W/Spectator reported 2018 a very good-to-excellent season/vintage in Mendoza.

Decanted 1 hr

Back label bollo*ks "...plummy, smokey fruit, and chocolate..." There is some bitter chocolate there, thankfully, and some plummy fruit. Smokey? Not for me.

C....deep red, clear

N....rich cassis, stewed damsons, med intense only.

T.....med+ body, warm alc 14.5%, floury easy tannins, I've opened it way too young at 2 yrs old. Attractive essence of red berryfruit, some length, ripe/no green edge, a soft mouth-feel/texture; ends near-dry. Some class here already, but obvious potential for more. Won't open other bottles of this 2018 until at least 4 yrs old.

At 2 hrs in decanter the chocolate really came through. Nice.

VFM?....£9.99, but feels £15.00. Bargain. I'll go back for a 91/100 wine for that price any day.

Bought Naked Wines UK online £9.99 at Angel discount May 2020

A pleasent Loire Valley IGP wine, not complex nor hugely interesting, but good value at £9.99 and I'll buy it again in gd yrs.

C....pale straw

N....low intensity crushed apple, lemon pith

T....crisp apples, nice minerality of limestone/wet river stone; decent essence/core; fruits include quince (sour), lemons, grapefruit. Lacked the usual suspects I was expecting - honey, apricot - but was probably expecting too much at this price (never going to get Domaine Huet at £9.99). I noted a decent finish. Ends med-dry, not dry.

VFM?....defo buy again in good season/vintage, feels like a £15 wine.

Nothing technically incorrect with this M&S UK supermarket own-label Marlb Sav Blanc, except it lacks charm.

Back label boll*cks claim ''...this exceptional Sauvignon...'' It is nothing near ''exceptional.'' However, their description also claims it has ''...grapefruit, herbs and passionfruit..." Well yes, I'd agree on the grapefruit and passionfruit. The love-in ends there.

C....pale, looks med-body

N....med intense ripe tropicals, rock melon.

T....some wet stone minerals, some fresh acid at 2 yrs old, defo in the Marl green edge grassy style; feels stalky, like a 2nd or 3rd pressing. Some lemon and grapefruit pith.

VFM?....feels approx £7.00....probably not going to buy again.

Bought £65.00 Lay and Wheeler UK online 2018.

Decanted 6 hrs before tasted at home, kitchen temp.

14.5% alc

Calvert vineyard is a "no chemicals" vineyard.

Food : had with roast duck

C....looked med+ body

N...alc and attractive spices, decent fruit

T.....wonderfully intense flavours but with elegance and balance, impressive length with powerful end, warm alc; a little tar, a little baccy; very classy PN, fresh cleansing acid at 7 yrs old. Soft easy floury tannins, plenty of charm. Not at all mature, great potential yet. I'll drink again in 2021-2024. Lovely silky mouth-feel. 94/100 now, would have been higher if more earthy forest floor characters , which was the only let-down.

VFM?....£65 for a NZ Pinot is near-expensive but I'd wager a £65 burgundy is probably not going to be as good as this.

Back label boll*cks "....steely minerality, baked apples..."

Yip, apples are there but, Hmmm, baked? Seemed more fresh and crisp to me. Plenty of acidity to balance decent fruit, but it isn't steely, nor is there evident minerality. That aside, I liked this. Begins a bit insipid but bulds to decent intensity, the kind of fruit we expect from ripe Riesling is there - ripe lime, apples - the acid is almost swirling. Made in off-dry style. Not bad for a supermarket own-label wine.

VFM?....feels like £11.00, would buy again in good years.
