Wow. This was the brightest, juiciest, zippiest bottle of the lot. So fresh and full of vigor. This sang right off the bat. The aroma is the absolute epitome of Bordeaux; wet stones, iron, crushed seashells, burnt ends, menthol and eucalyptus with a pronounced undercurrent of ripe dark fruit. Melty tannins and perfect balance create a silky mouthfeel. Flavors are quintessential Saint-Estéphe; creme de mure, blackberry seed, violet water. It's rich and powerful without being unctuous. Best mature wine I've had in a long time.

Tight and tannic on the first day; much more relaxed on the second, though still lively on the finish. Stewed fruit, bittersweet cacao and earthy spices. Quite a bit of life left.

Sugar-free cherry kool-aid is more interesting and flavorful.

Color of dried blood; very thin. Aroma of meat and potpourri. Similar on the palate, with some baking spice. Enjoyable.

2010 Château Poitevin Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Drunk over two days.
Blood red--nearly opaque. Cool nose of wet stones, cacao and stony red fruit. Very smooth in the mouth, round and supple. Dusty tannins. Notes of menthol, chocolate and black fruit liqueur.

Another great bottle. This one differed in flavor profile, however. More akin to an aged Burgundy, with less herbs and fruit and more meat and umami. Like eggs fried in duck fat. Very enjoyable.

Bright purple color, almost magenta. Persistent aromas of wet earth, rubber and tar. Tart, seedy black fruit up front yields to creme de mure and sweet herbal notes.

Clear garnet, thin edge, no bricking. Needs about 90 minutes to fully open. Subtle nose of wet stones, iodine, pencil shavings. The palate is where this really shines; zippy tannins right off the bat, sleek red fruit, and a beautiful cream-acid balance. Well structured, a very satisfying effort.

This was the third bottle I've had, similar experiences, no variation. Says a lot.

Clear garnet, no bricking and just a bit thin at the edge. Medium weight. Nose of iodine, rose petals and plumped prunes. The palate is cool and delicate, though lacquered; with flavors of sweet kirsch liqueur, graphite and warm spice. Sweet, fine-grained tannins give way to a subtle yet persistent finish. Pretty and feminine, classically built, fresh and delicious. This is at its peak.

Clear, pretty ruby; slightly thin at the rim. Herbs, earth and dry leaves on the nose (after a couple hours in the air it's a plume of tar (nice)). Tart, stony red fruits up front yield to a bit of raisin on the back end with enough tannin and acidity to keep it grippy. Atypical of California, austere and classical. Definitely a classicist's wine; if you favor the old world this is for you.

This followed a '69 Lascombes. This surprised the most (though not the better wine). Beautiful bright and clear garnet. No bricking, only lightly thinned at the edge. Vibrant nose of fleshy red fruit, fresh wet herbs and earth. Very fresh and robust on the palate. Unctuous and dripping with red fruits; this was assisted by tannins that were fully integrated, though noticeable. Very clean with great balance. A real over-achiever.
Red
Nice deep color with only a touch of bricking; very thin at the edge. A slow start, but gained intensity. Aromas of warm stones, leather, dried flower petals and ripe black fruit. Likewise on the palate. Very enjoyable. Always fun to drink wine that's older than I.

Lightweight. Clear ruby; surprisingly, only a tinge of bricking. Nose of iodine and earth. Not much on the palate, either. A fairly pedestrian effort; the structure is there, it's just not plush enough to be really enjoyable.

Very concentrated opaque ruby, slight bricking and thinning at the edge. Shy nose of iron filings, charred meat and iodine. A firm quaff with a bit of fruit still left; cool and blue. Fine tannins make it interesting. Virtually no sediment. This delivered more than I expected. Drink 'em down.

Nice aroma of earth and ripe red fruit. Clear ruby. Mid weight, though leggy. OK mouthfeel with dusty tannins and decent balance. Earth and spices on the palate with bright red fruit. I've never been crazy about syrah (Italian syrah tends to be an exception); but this has a bit of the characteristic that I can only describe as "soapy". All things considered, I like this wine, but I won't drink it again.

Very concentrated deep crimson. Medium-plus weight. Great balance and mouthfeel; tannins are fully integrated. Aroma of smoke, herbs and leather. Fruit is a bit restrained, but there is richness and power that bolsters its physique.
This is in its adolescence, I recommend trying it now and then revisiting it in five years.

Inky crimson, very concentrated. Mid-plus weight. Very fresh nose of wet stones, iron filings, and blackberry gastrique. Austere palate, though very smooth. Not yielding a ton of flavor, yet; but flashes of rich fruit. I'd say these are still early days for this wine's development.
Red
Thin consistency, bricking (obviously). A bit of tar and something medicinal on the nose, similar to dry sherry. On the palate I can tell it's a liquid. Other than that, I get nothing. No fruit, finesse, or finish. I admit my aversion to Barbaresco; I've never had one that made me say "I sure want another one of those". I think that's just the style. Oh well. I tried.

This must be shut down at the moment. Nothing like other bottles of H-C I've had; no aroma, tart, no fruit. I'll see if it perks up overnight.
Well, I'm a drunk and apparently that makes me a liar because I finished the bottle. It did round out a bit, though this requires some more time to work itself into better shape.

Rich with smooth dark fruits, toasted oak and short finish. Completely one dimensional; has nothing to offer but over-ripened fruit. Throwing some sediment. Enjoyable, but not a very strong effort, especially considering the price. You can do better for half the price in either California or Bordeaux, depending on which style you prefer. This poses as both and delivers neither.

Old world style with an over-arching coolness. No real evolution and a bit one-note, though a good note. Entry level Bordeaux style at twice the price; I'm glad these were gifts.

Inky purple. Syrupy consistency. Nose of blueberry jam, leather, woodsy herbs. Candied mouthfeel. Vague syrupy sweetness on the palate, not much else. Doesn't have the tannins, minerality or grip needed to balance the fruit. Drinkable, but barely.

Color of wet black cherries, slight thinning at the edge. Fat, syrupy texture; very long-legged. Nose of chocolate covered cherries, herbal menthol and forest floor. Despite its appearance, this is light on its feet in terms of mouthfeel; grippy, though unctuous with a long finish. Minimal tannins left. Flavor is earthy with a bit of dark chocolate and seedy red fruits. There is balance all around here, including the alcohol (14.5% declared) which doesn't impede the flavors.

Inky purple. Nose opens with creme de mure, graphite, menthol, cigar box and a whiff of rubber. Luxurious mouthfeel, packed with ripe dark fruits and baking spice and bolstered with a firm backbone of minerality. Well structured with a medium finish. Just coming into its drinking window; this should show for another ten years.

p.s. A bit of sediment, though.

Color is a pallid garnet and starting to show signs of age; bricking and thinning at the edges. Nose of wet potting soil, chamomile, baking spices. A mouthful of dusty tannins yield to silky dark chocolate, ripe red fruit, and cool stones. Very drinkable; so much so, that I probably didn't give this enough time to fully open. Totally worth it.

Nose of rugged leather, burnt candle wick, and a whiff of potpourri. Lots of alcohol (14.5% declared); though very well hidden. 30 minutes in and the tannins are starting to show; velvety and long. An hour thirty, its yielding some fruit. This needs a couple more years to knit together, but this bodes well.

Deep crimson. Mealy tannins. Muted, almost non-existent nose; "vague wine smell". Weird, brambly stalk on the palate. I'm going to put this away until tomorrow.
Night two. More of the same. Tart, green. Undrinkable. Just not built for the long-haul.

Rich crimson. Resinous legs. Beautifully well-structured frame. Nose of blueberry syrup, wet stones, graphite, leather, cigar box and a whiff of eucalyptus. Austere palate. Finely-grained tannins give way to bittersweet cacao and crunchy blackberry seed. I know there are more buried flavors that will be revealed in time. Very classical.
A brief editorial: I love this wine.

After three hours the fruit is just starting to expose itself... and the bottle is empty. Pity.
I dunno. If you have this, wait a few more years, or decant.

Very concentrated clear ruby core, slight thinning at the edges. Not cloudy or bricking. Sultry nose of creme de cassis, black cherry, sweet black licorice and rose petals. Initially, a little uptight with coarse tannins up front and no real fruit detectable. 30 minutes in, the tannins are much softer and subdued and the fruit is beginning to puff out its chest. An hour thirty, the tannins are fully integrated across the palate; the fruit is as pronounced as possible. The aroma is still very powerful; flavors are clean with ripe black fruits and a pinch of grains of paradise along the sides. Overall, very classical and well built Bordeaux.
