Opened, decanted and drank over approximately 2 hours. Meaty black cherry with soil and leather notes. Needs quite a bit of swirling to bring out some star anise aromas too. The fruit is there on the palate, but quite firm still. Gripping with quite a bit of tannin. Great acidity in the finish. Great elements all around, just need to come together a bit more. First of a handful of bottles bought on release and will probably wait a few more years before trying another.

1/31/21, 11:45 AM - I seem to remember this retailing around $125 on release.

Early Birthday Celebration (Chicago): From magnum obtained directly from the Domaine just over 4 years ago. Opened 45 minutes before trying and then decanted and drank over the next 3 hours or so. A mix of dried red and black fruit with notes of damp earth, worn leather, black truffle and savory herbs. Medium bodied on the palate and I would say at its peak, but will hold for another couple years (with this provenance).

3/27/17, 1:21 PM - Hi and thanks for the note! I have not had this since my last note in 2013, though if I had any left in my cellar, I would treat as a pop and pour as you suggested. Hope its great!

Red
1998 Domaine Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes Pinot Noir

Dinner at Home with Friends (My House, Chicago IL): Opened about 2 hours before serving. A dark red/almost black cherry and berry fruit profile with some meaty spice and great earth notes. Typical Leroy floral, but not as much as the previous wines tonight. Relatively fruit forward on the palate with some good mineral structure. Medium body and finish. Nice acidity with well integrated tannins. Quite good.

4/15/13, 3:00 PM - I really enjoy the 98s right now, but the good ones certainly have the structure to age for a little longer still. If I had any of these in my cellar, for my own taste I would probably drink now and over the new 2-3 years.
