Great Napa Cab and at $36 on sale, great QPR. Wonderful fruit, soft tannins, lingering aftertaste. I would buy in another vintage.

This is one of two ventures into Aussie Cab. So far, not great. Required a double Vinturi to make it even drinkable and you would have never identified this as a Cab. There are way better wines available in this price range.

Great wine. Hard to believe it is 100% Grenache given the body and depth of flavors.
  • SLOFred commented:

7/19/20, 2:38 PM - I bought the wine from "Wine Access" and the flyer that came with the wine says it is comprised "entirely of 100+ year old vine Grenache." I agree, it is much more bold than typical Grenache and I was surprised after seeing the flyer. But not unlike some old vine Spanish Garnacha.

  • SLOFred commented:

7/20/20, 8:55 AM - How fun! I try to buy some of his wine at almost every vintage, especially the Anonyme.

Drinkable. Certainly not worth the $42. As opposed to so many of my aged Italians, at least this had some fruit left in it and did not just consist of a finish of tannins.
  • SLOFred commented:

7/18/20, 3:18 PM - Of course there is some bottle variation, but the variation has rarely gone in the positive direction. I don't understand your comment on QPR. What I am trying to communicate is there are a lot better wines, regardless of vintage, that $42 will buy. And given that this is 9 year old wine, $42 today is likely $50, making this an even worse purchase. I definitely consider price in my ratings.

  • SLOFred commented:

7/19/20, 2:43 PM - At least to me, I have found young sangiovese/brunello unpalatable when young, nothing but tannin. Then when I have aged then, the tannins finally do fade, but there is no fruit left behind. As a result, I am just burning through some old italian reds I have that I purchased 5-8 years ago. They may get consumed, most end up in my vinegar barrel. I have not purchased any Italian reds for at least 3-5 years because of this.

This is a great wine for the price. It is pretty classic for Spanish Grenache. Much heavier than classic Rhone grenache. But interestingly the night before we had a St Roch from Languedoc region of France. That extends to the spanish border making this interesting in that it also had the fullness of this wine1 The similarities were interesting. My wife felt the French one had more fruit, this one more body. She preferred the French, i preferred the spanish! Either way, both wines are a good value.

I don't get how this wine scores so highly. I last tasted in 2014 and laid down my remaining 8 bottles in hope it would get better. No chance. This wine remains very shallow. It has a nice color, sparkly, but not deep as I expect for aglianico. Little nose, no fruit up front, totally missing mid and back palate. I don't get what people see in this wine. (and I really like aglianico). I really expected sooooo much for from a $57 wine. Too bad I still have 8 bottles left. This wine has no "come hither" at all.
  • SLOFred commented:

6/27/20, 3:42 PM - Hi Vinogan: the reason why I have so many Italian reds that I do not like is simple--I expanded my wine cellar from 144 bottles to 4000+ in 2012. As a result, I started buying a bunch of wine to fill it! I got on-line subscriptions to daily/weekly emails from some of the better retailers. So I would read the write-ups and buy! I laid a lot of these wines down for a year or two, then started tasting them. I was not happy with them. I told myself it must be because they are "too young." Well, that is certainly not the case. I completely stopped buying ANY Italian reds about 4 years ago, and will not touch them now. All I am doing now is drinking (or trying to) the wines I collected but had never tasted. As I go through them, you are correct, the ones I am more attracted to are the more modern super Tuscans which are more or less blends of BDX varietals completely or they are blended with Sangiovese. I have found most of the Brunellos I own just terrible, and they are not cheap wines. Maybe just my choice in wines. Anyway, I will continue slog through the remaining Italian reds I have left, likely only to go back and tip-toe into some more from the very few producers I have liked.

  • SLOFred commented:

6/29/20, 8:47 AM - Well, I learned my lesson! Now I only order 3-4 bottles of wine from any varietal or producer I have never had before and my purchases are much more focused to producers that I am familiar with and who have a track record with me where every wine they make I like. I will tip toe into some Toro wines. I love Spanish wines. They make some of my favorite Grenache and Mourvedre based wine. Have you ever had "Clio" from Jumilla? If not, try it. Lovely wine. I am drinking 2012 now.

  • SLOFred commented:

6/29/20, 3:25 PM - This is what I love about Cellar Tracker, conversations like this. You will love Clio. It is one of only several wines that each year I buy a case of. The others are Esprit from Tablas Creek and Alpha Omega II. They are all always lovely, can't miss wines regardless of the vintage. The Clio is year in and year out one of my favorites. You are hard pressed to find a better bottle under $40. I will look out for the Mas Doix. Where in the US are you? East or West coast?

Another horrible, overpriced, over hyped, Italian red wine. Nothing but tannin when young, no fruit, no body, no flavor when old. Horrible QPR, almost painful to think what I paid for this! At $67, there are dozens of domestic wines I would trade this for. I have 2 more bottles, anyone want them? Clearly there are people in CT who like this stuff.
  • SLOFred commented:

4/27/20, 3:07 PM - I would love to get rid of them. I paid $67 and I still have 2 bottles left still in the original tissue paper wrapper. Where do you live? I am in SLO, CA.

  • SLOFred commented:

4/28/20, 9:12 AM - Not really. I prefer softer, rounder, blends. One of my favorite producers is Tablas Creek in Paso. They produce wonderfully balanced rhone blends. I also like Italian Aglianico and the super Tuscans and Nero d'Avola. Yes, I am shocked at the number of people that like this wine. I wonder what would happen if this wine was poured blindly to many of these people??

  • SLOFred commented:

4/27/20, 3:01 PM - Not true. I have had some great Italian Reds. I thought that was the problem, so I gave 2-2010 Brunello's to a friend of mine who has a spectacular palate. he agreed, the wine was crap!! And these were not flawed or corked bottles, it was just bad wine.

  • SLOFred commented:

4/28/20, 9:15 AM - I actually have had many good Italian wines. I had an Orma last night that was wonderful. A Cabrea that was also great. I also like Aglianico. I also had some fabulous Ciacci Brunello from the late 80's and early 90's, but these recent Brunellos have been just plain empty.

Not even drinkable. Totally tasteless. Just another bad, overhyped wine. Never get again. Off to the vinegar bin.
  • SLOFred commented:

4/27/20, 8:30 AM - Hi Patrick- I hope you are correct, but I doubt it. I have a few bottles left and will try another, but I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact they will be going into the Vin Bin. After I expanded my wine cellar space in 2013, I began buying many well reviewed Italian reds. At least 90% were tannic monsters when first poured, then when aged turned into fruitless, flavorless, bodiless blobs. I do not share your optimism over this wine.

Undrinkable, and for $57, it makes me sick. Off the vinegar bin. Just another horrible, overpriced, Italian red wine.
  • SLOFred commented:

4/24/20, 12:40 PM - With this "stay at home" issue going on, I have been rooting through all my older wines, which when I tasted young, I thought would turn around with age. At least for almost ALL my Italians, with the exception of a few super Tuscans, they have turned to absolute garbage---the tannins have softened only to reveal that there is NO body, NO fruit and virtually NO flavor. I am very disappointed, and as an Italian-American, I am very disappointed in the motherland!!

  • SLOFred commented:

4/24/20, 5:12 PM - The problem is I have been so consistently burned with so many different wines from so many "so called quality" producers I have no interest in throwing money at these wines when I know other producers that are consistently excellent at half the price.

Great, well balanced white wine. What is interesting is that you can taste each of the individual varietals without tasting any of them! Does that make sense? So well blended you get each of the wines but none of them dominate.
  • SLOFred commented:

4/21/20, 8:39 AM - I could not agree more. Similar comments for the Cotes Noir. I like the Cotes because it usually grenache dominant and makes it a more versatile wine with food than the Esprit or Panoplie.

  • SLOFred commented:

Although way ahead in bouquet compared to the Lynch Moussas 2005 (and nowhere near to the perfect Leoville Poyferre 1990 the same evening), after having had 8 bottles so far of this wine and another 44 in the cellar I am getting a little bit concerned: This is extremely dry, lacks fruit, and has virtually no aftertaste. I am not convinced this is going anywhere. I may be spoiled but see no joy in drinking this wine. Gloria has been 'glorified' by several critics. I hate to say I am on the sideline. Lets see whether this is still too young and closed down. I hope so!
  • SLOFred commented:

3/28/20, 10:25 AM - Wow, this has been my experience with some really well reviewed Italian reds! I look on line and in CT and they have these great reviews, high scores and high prices. I then open them up, they have no flavor, no body, lots of tannin, and it ends up in the vinegar bin. This is why I now only buy wines from producers I have had over the years and limit my purchases to new producers to 3-4 bottles. That way if it is crap, I don't feel so bad, if it is good, they I will buy future vintages. I feel for you to have 44 more bottles of wine you probably paid $50 for. Ouch.

What is unique about this wine is that even though it is Grenache dominant in the blend, to me the nose varied between the bottles. Could be aging. For me, who cares because is it such a delicious wine and a good value!

Super wine for the price. Great QPR. Really good, but the 2014 is even better!
  • SLOFred commented:

11/19/16, 2:22 PM - Agreed. 2013 may be more integrated because of one more year of aging, but once the 2014 is older, I think it will still be better---and I love the overall 2013 PR vintage! Says a lot for 2014.

11/20/16, 9:57 AM - I will have to check out Giornata. I love many, not all, Italian varietals. My favorite has become Aglianico. The best value I have found, year in and year out is, Gudarro. Sells for about $20. I find they come around about 8-10 years from the vintage, they are at their best. What you you lucky enough to do in Naples for 3-4 year? My parents come from a town about 100 KM east.

11/20/16, 10:22 AM - Yes, I live in San Luis Obispo, 30-40 minutes south of the wine country. I will check them out. I am up there frequently.

Found at Costco for $20. What a steal. It has been 20 years or more since I tasted a Marlstone, but this was as good as I remember the blend to be. I will definitely buy this again if I ever see it at Costco or for close to this price. This has definitely some more time to peak. I would try again in 6 months. This was PnP but a one hour decant would be of benefit.
  • SLOFred commented:

8/31/16, 11:40 AM - It was about 3-4 years ago at the Costco in San Luis Obispo, CA. It was a fluke. When I visited the winery last year they said this rarely happens but occasionally the need to clear inventory and that is why it showed up. It is not typical that they sell this to Costco. But a incredible wine for $20!!!

Just delicious. I would love to try their upper end wine at over $100/bottle. This is so good, I can't imagine their first label.

Very nice wine but very tannnic. Even 6 years post crush, still tannic. I recommend a Vinturi decant at least 3 hours before drinking. After that, it is very nice. Straight PnP, watch out!
  • SLOFred commented:

5/26/16, 5:10 PM - If you do not want to run it through a Vinturi, give it minimum 3 years. Could even be longer. This was pretty tannic.

Clean, vibrant Chablis. We drank this on the heels of a Phelps Chard, and it was no contest, the Michel was far superior.

3/26/16, 1:47 PM - No kidding! See my most recent posting. The producers in CA and OR just cannot do what the French can do for half the price.

Jeez. Another crappy Italian expensive wine. Is it me or the wines, but I feel like the Italian wines I keep buying are "shabeed" (which is dialect for "just plain flat.") There is just nothing to this wine. Very flat, little fruit, just plain non-descript.

Qui il vino mi è costato $ 40. Acquistato da un negozio di vini molto affidabile a Los Angeles. Stored perfettamente a 57 gradi Fahrenheit. Amo aglianico. Ho decantato 2-3 ore.

I miei genitori erano italiani e ho studiato all'università. Cerco anche di bere vini italiani come lo è la mia eredità, ma sono molto deluso.

Great red wine. Probably not as good as the current 12 and 13 releases.
  • SLOFred commented:

9/8/15, 7:48 AM - Wilypod: The 13's are my preference. Of the Grenache based wines, I prefer the en Gobelet, which is my favorite. The straight Grenache is good, but the 13 is much better than 12 and I think that 14 may be even better, based on vintage, but it is not released yet. I am not much of a Cotes fan.

This is not one of the better TCV wines I have had. It definitely has no flaws but also is not very exhilarating. I usually expect more from TCV wines.
  • SLOFred commented:

8/29/15, 12:10 PM - This comment was mistakenly put to the wrong wine! Somehow it ended up on the cotes when it belonged on the 2011 en Gobelet!

Pretty darn nice for $20. I would definitely buy more. Lovely characteristic cigar box/cedar flavor and aromas so typical of BDX. A little light in the front palate, but finishes nicely.

Another fine TCV effort. I agree with the vintage chart by TCV, it is ready to drink, could go a little longer. Surprised because it is a 2010. Good flavor integration of the varietals, but at least for me, I get a wonderful grenache flavor in the finish. Surprised me a bit. Decanted 2 hours.
  • SLOFred commented:

    2/28/15, 1:09 PM - Hi Willypod
Funny you should mention the 2012! I am just getting ready to head to TCV winery for a 2005 horizontal. The March special is the 2012 En Gobelet! Of the 2012's from TCV, it is one of my favorites. And you are right, the Grenache in the 2012 makes it wonderful. I will be loading up my cellar with it today!

  • SLOFred commented:

3/1/15, 10:27 AM - Well, the testing was enlightening! We had Vermentino, Viognier and the Esprit Blanc. All were excellent. The first two may not go much further, but they were still very lively. They did give insight as to how these wines will develop. The reds were the Mourvedre and Counoise. The first was pretty powerful for its age, the Counoise reminded me of a Grenache or Beaujolais. Both still had some life, surprisingly. But then the Esprit Noir and the Panoplie. A delicious tar from the syrah in the Esprit. Loved it. Still had lots of life. (Fortunately, I had the insight to buy this wine while still available and I have about 16 bottles in my cellar--Yummy) Just an amazing wine. The Panoplie was still really young. With 25% syrah in the Esprit and 5% in the Panoplie, you could definitely tell that he tar was from the syrah. Last was the vin de Paille. Incredible balance. I am not much of a desert wine drinker, but the balance on this wine was really something.

  • SLOFred commented:

3/2/15, 7:19 AM - Surprisingly, the Esprit Blanc developed a richness that is not in the younger versions. But it is rich in mouth-feel without developing that ugly, cloying character that I despise in CA Chardonnay (PS: I drink SB or French Chablis or Rhone whites, I just had CA Chard).

  • SLOFred commented:

3/2/15, 9:25 AM - One last thing about TCV. Their vintage chart is a GREAT guide. I wish more wineries did that.

Hard time justifying $33. Brickish on opening, not much in the nose, tannic with little fruit. Thinner than I would have expected for a brunello. 3 hour decant. Next time it will be a 3 hour decant with Vinturi and see if it is any better. I wish I did not have 8 more bottles.
  • SLOFred commented:

1/27/15, 4:03 PM - Well, no use drinking them now! So I might as well wait a few years. If they still taste so poorly, I will contact you then!!!
