One of 32 vintages tasted at the estate.
What an amazing evolution that took place for the two hours this was in my glass!
The finish on this is ethereal, and lasts for minutes. One of the greatest Madeira's I have ever tasted.

Tasted at the winery in downtown Funchal. The 1850 was the highlight of my tasting (tasted through 34 different wines from the estate).

The 1850 Verdelho is an ethereal wine. At first sip, the wine was completely shut down (disappointed), but I had the pleasure of slowly sipping this golden brown elixir for over 2 hours. And it continued to "wow" me with every small sip that I took. This beauty kept on getting better and better in the glass. What a fascinating journey and exploration this was.

The wine continued to evolve and show great secondary and tiertiary characteristics of fine, old, Verdelho; toffee, caramel, candied lemon, tobacco, marzipan.

The finish of this wine lingered for minutes. Yes, you are drinking history. And it's absolutely worth it, if you can track down a bottle. I cannot wait to open up my bottles and home and will be sure to follow up with my notes back in the U.S.

The best Madeira that I've ever had...its a tie with the 1839 Acciaioly Verdelho; the two greatest Madeira's I've ever tasted.

Tasted at Matter of Taste...

WOW! This is a massive, viscous wine of enourmous concentration. Velvety tannnins which coat you palate in a pleasant way. The finish lingers on and on...for minutes.

This is truly a one of a kind Brunello. Probably the best young Brunello I have ever tasted. This will have a very long life ahead of it. I preferred this over the Madonna delle Grazie. Most at the tasting agreed that this was clearly the wine of the night.

This will have a very long life ahead of it, but with some air, I think it will become approachable sooner than later, due to the balance of the fine, elegant tannin structure.

Drink 2020-2040+++

Drank over the course of two nights. Dark, brooding, classic Barolo. I found this wine to be surprisingly accessible in its youth. But it also has the backbone to be a 20-25+ year wine.

WOW was my recurring tasting note over the course of both nights. This is a stunner. Best Rupestris I've ever had, and in my opinion, has many similarities to Pie Franco in this vintage.

Stunning expression of Barbaresco. The QPR on this wine is through the roof!

One of the greatest young Barbaresco's that I've ever tasted. Drinking well now with a long decant, but has a very long life ahead of it. Drink 2018-2030+

Fun, quaffable, easy drinking red.

I'm generally not a fan of Ganevat's reds, but this one was enjoyable to drink. The bottle disappeared quickly.....

One of my all time favorite 100% Chardonnay bottlings from Ganevat.

Huge, imposing wine, that continued to evolve over time. This continued to get better over the course of 4 days. Has a long life ahead of it.

One of my favorite Ganevat cuvees. Blend of 50% Savagnin/50% Chardonnay.

Austere wine with beautiful structure and concentration. Viscous, with a very long finish. Reminded me of a Hermitage Blanc. Very interesting wine.

Big, bold, structured CDP....but needs a lot of time.

Began to open and evolve on day 3. Needs another 5-7 years before it hits prime time.

Tightly wound and tannic, but the traditional Bartolo Mascarello characteristics on the nose and mid palate begin to come alive after this wine had lots of air. I prefer the 2004 over the 2006, and believe the 2004 vintage will become enter its prime drinking window shortly, and should last almost as long as the 2006.

Drink 2018-2030.

Drank side by side blind, along the 2004, 06, 08, 10. The 2006 is shut down and the tannins need time to be tamed. Wild and burly, but very monolithic. This wine needs a lot more time in the bottle to flesh out.

Should definitely improve over time, but this one is not ready for prime time just yet. (93-96). Drink 2025++

Surprisingly open and expressive in its youth, the 2007 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo is already accessible today with proper aeration. This Barolo should be best consumed within the next decade. 94+

One of my favorite vintages of Bartolo Mascarello from the 21st century. Open and much more expressive than the 04 and 06 (tasted side by side).

Highly recommended. Drink 2018-2040+

Consumed out of a half bottle several times over the past few months.

I love the 2009 Beaucastel CDP. It is relatively approachable now, and I have a personal preference to this vintage over the 2010, and I believe the 2009 will outpace the 2010 in the long run. Drink 2016-2028.

Bartolo Mascarello Vertical Tasting

Knowing that opening up this bottle anytime before 2020 would be infanticide, I decided to open up this wine a day before, and double decanting it, before including it in a vertical tasting. And I'm sure glad I did!

This wine was served blind, and was the unanimous favorite amongst the entire group. No one could guess that this was the 2010. It was often mistaken as the 04, 08 and 96. Regardless of what people thought this wine was, it left a lasting impression.

A classic expression of traditional Barolo; menthol, tar, tobacco, and an intoxicating nose of freshly cut violets and roses. I could not get my nose out of my glass....I could smell this beauty from across the room. This wine left everyone in the room in a state of euphoria; it has no peers.

I am very fortunate to have a few more bottles of this wine, which I will be holding for several years.

This is clearly the greatest young Barolo that I have ever tasted, and I have tasted many. This is also the greatest Bartolo Mascarello Barolo that I've tasted, and I've tasted virtually every vintage since 1990. Drink 2020-2050+

My second bottle of this wine in the past few months....and it was just as outstanding as the first!

Decanted the bottle in the morning...amazing depth, concentration and complexity, leading to a 45+ second finish. This is a massive wine, but it is almost weightless, as the tannins are so finely grained and seamlessly integrated into this wine.

One of my favorite 2010 Brunello's. OUTSTANDING and highly recommended!

Barolo tasting dinner....
This was by far and large the wine of the night. Beautiful, classic nose of violets and tar, very light on its feet with smooth, silky tannins, and a long, harmonious finish. No hard edges in this wine. Drinking beautifully right now.

I can't imagine this getting any better than it is now. Drink 2016-2020.

A beautiful wine....amazing concentration and a long finish. Still very much a baby, as there is still lots of Syrah fruit present in the mid-palate. Although this pales in comparison to the 90.

I guess I am still spoiled by the 1990 La Chapelle, which remains one of the greatest wines that I've tasted.

Murky Rose-like color, muted nose...vegetal......

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be one of those trendy low alcohol Pinots, but this is borderline undrinkable for me....

Big and clumsy. I'm still trying to figure this wine out....as I generally enjoy wines from this producer.

The tannins were well integrated in the wine, but the alcohol seems to overwhelm the wine, and mute all of its fruit. Very singular and monotonous.

Another fine example of a 2011 CDP that is drinking well in its youth.

Elegant, light on its feet, but without sacrificing flavor or concentration. Old world style. Stewed fruits, smoke, herbs and classic kirsch on the finish.

Consumed over the course of two days. Still a very, very young wine. If I had more bottles, I would not touch them for another five years.

Classic CDP kirsch favors emerged on day two. Not sure it's worth the price of admission, low on the QPR scale.

Consumed over the course of 3 days. This is one of the best young Brunello's I've ever tasted!

Amazing concentration, with sweet, supple Sangiovese fruit that lingers through the 60+ second finish. I can still taste this wine now.

This wine was surprisingly approachable on day one, but continued to get better and better over the course of 3 days, which tells me it has a long life ahead of it.

I've tasted dozens of 2010 BdM's, and this is clearly one of my favorites. Highly, highly recommended.

Drank over the course of two days. I expected more from this wine. I really like the producer, and I love drinking 2011 CDPs now, but this one didn't do it for me. Very singular and hot on the finish. The heat is inconsistent with most 2011's. Disjointed effort.

Some volatile acidity on the initial glass, which seemed to have went away over the course of the evening. Nice CDP, but does not stand up to others in its pedigree in this vintage.

Just read other tasting notes on this wine. The unusual acidity seems consistent across the board on this wine. My bottle seemed to perform better after significant aeration.

I have had the pleasure of tasting this wine on numerous occasions over the past few years, and it continues to improve, and leave me breathless!

Amazing richness and depth, trademark notes of menthol, tar, licorice and a slight basalmic note in the finish, which lasts for almost 60 seconds! This is a very powerful Barolo with great structure, yet the tannins are extremely finished. This wine is in complete balance, and is firing on all cylinders!

This wine was clearly shut down for many years, but I believe it is only now beginning to enter the early end of its drinking window. I have 3 more bottles of this beauty, which I look forward to revisiting in the very near future. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Drink 2015-2025+

Nose was muted/closed, and the wine lacked the depth and nuances of other CDPs from this vintage.
