Very nice wine, drank at Oenotri in Napa Valley. Decanted and let sit for 30 minutes, definitely a delicious example of a St. Helena Cab, warm, fruit forward (ripe blackberry, subtle cherry, currants), smooth from start to finish (20-30 seconds). Perhaps a bit uni dimensional, missing a touch of acidity that I like in my wines, however for the price almost unbeatable. Great easy drinking wine, well done!

Shows the class of the '05 Bordeaux vintage. Aromatic and intense bouquet displays cherries, scorched earth, pencil lead, and walnut shell. It opened up beautifully in the mouth, with a linear tension between fruit and savory elements. Long and earthy finish. A nice Saint Estephe.

Worth waiting 12 1/2 years to drink, wine magazines and other sites have this a tad lower rating, but our bottle was exceptional: Still had tannins, still had a long finish, the Cab with varietally-correct notes was predominant and this was a wine well beyond medium-bodied.
Threw just a little bit of sediment.
Here is how you handle a bottle of this age, based on our experience:
1) Let breathe 30-60 minutes prior to consumption-no more!
2) Do NOT decant in a decanter - instead, pour it into a large format Bordeaux-typre glass 15 minutes before dinner and that will be all the air it needs!
3) Enjoy- DRINK NOW, this is at its peak.
  • George C ATLANTA commented:

5/22/18, 6:15 PM - Yes, read my review. I agree-- exceptional.

PNP. cork perfect. color garnet. nose shows mostly spice and vanilla cranberry. swishing gives more spice and acid structure. sipping shows good polish and med length tartish finish. this like some older vintages I have had recently is a little more extracted and less typical of pinot noir. still quite good

powerhouse of a wine, classic cassis and mushroom aroma and taste, so so young, it can live for another 20 + years easily. Let them rest if you have these, go for something more approachable like Dominus.

2/9/18, 4:28 PM - Had another one from the cellar tonight. Decanted for 2 hours and still a little tight/closed. What a beast! Delicious wine but still has a long life ahead. I am sticking with my original rating, but no mushroom flavors left, it's more berries and flowers now. Maturing nicely. Not a Carter or Schrader CCS from the same year which are two notches above, but still an outstanding effort.

The wine has reached maturity and it is incredible. Much better tan a year ago. Powerful but very elegant. It will go incredible with a ribeye. The wine is extremely delicious and very well structured. The nose is intoxicating, but will never reach what the Metisse 05 did in this área.

Dark purple. This was the consensus wine of the tasting for the group and my WOTN.
Huge gorgeous nose of spicy red and dark fruit, the expected cherry cola with layer after layer of beautifully balanced fruit. The finish just keeps on going. The first to be finished as well. The acidity is right on. Wonderful.

Let me make two things clear. One, I loved it. Two, you should stay away from this for another 5 years. At various points, glorious Margaux notes poked out but it's still quite primordial. Very fine nose of raspberry, white flowers, violets, Margaux pencil-lead, cedar, mineral. Tight on the palate. Long finish. Sit tight, ok? I promise it'll be good.

Vivid ruby in color, this wine reveals black raspberry, rhubarb and smoke on the nose. The mouth feel reveals vibrant acidity, silky texture and defined cherry-cola undertones. The finish comes up slightly short, dropping my score several points. 14.1% abv.

Purchased for $30US, this wines aromatics and mouth feel are superb. The short finish is dissapointing.

Decanted for two hours. This is a caveman's wine. This is a Paleo and Atkins diet wine. This is a wine crafted for a T-Rex. This wine is a 48oz. Peter Luger porterhouse steak. This is a Medieval Times eat your meat off a leg bone wine. A blood suckers wine. This is not a namby-pamby vegan or vegetarian's wine. This is not a suburban soccer mom pumpkin spice wine. This is not a 1999 98-point Parker Australian Shiraz ooze monster. This is a Pizza Hut meat lover's wine that should have a warning sticker on the label that reads, "Meat Only...No Fruits Allowed!" I'd love to hand a glass of this wine to a vegan/vegetarian and ask them to describe what they are smelling. I think they'd lack descriptors because this wine smells only like various types and preparations of meat. Grilled, smoked, sauteed, fried, even a la plancha. A carnivores delight, this wine is. This wine is not for the masses and I wouldn't presume to serve it to friends at a Saturday night dinner while playing Cards Against Humanity. This is an old school Cornas syrah lover's wine. Drink at your own risk. 98pts.

3/12/17, 2:08 PM - spot on! well written and I appreciate your review. I laughed as well. I am sitting on two of these monsters. And yes on a bunch of Clape Cornas (06), amazing wine. Should I sit on the Horsepower a bit longer? The 06 Cornas is drinking wonderfully but every year it gets better.

2009 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc de Lynch-Bages Bordeaux Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend
Golden straw colour. As already mentioned, green apple really hits out on the nose, it's still fairly steely, stony and chalky, but after some time in the glass, the richer tropical and peach notes start to dominate. The acidity still really bites on the palate with bright apricot and stone fruit, with an undertone of vanilla and oak and a lingering citrusy finish. Concentrated but not complicated, very enjoyable. ****
  • George C ATLANTA commented:

6/4/16, 3:16 PM - It has aged gracefully now, all the steel is gone, apple is less green, and it's more peach and tropical fruit now. Hardly any acidity, but could probably still age a couple more years. Poetry in a bottle.

Jammy wine with crushed berry and cassis dominant flavors, with some dark coffee thrown in as well. It was so substantial, we could only sip it and so for a dinner for two it lasted the whole dinner and into desert. We had some French press coffee with desert and a 1/2 glass of the Schafer left so we went back and forth, and this wine is so powerful it even complimented the coffee, if that makes any sense-- one sip of coffee, one sip of wine and bam, the lingering flavors of the coffee in the mouth exploded. It is versatile and meat and chocolate centric wine... Compared to a delicious BV Georges de latour 2008 I had recently, this is a step above in ageability and density, but it is not a romantic wine... For subtle, delicious Stags Leap cab, my benchmark is the 2007 Cliff Lede Poetry. My girflfriend and I agreed we will age the Schafer and have one a year from the cellar to see how it develops over the next few years.
  • George C ATLANTA commented:

5/15/16, 7:19 PM - We had my final bottle of this last night -- more than two years after my first review--and it had greatly evolved, no rough edges at all, no hints of tannins, still very structured and a complex, beautiful wine, no hint of vanilla or caramel, just pure cassis, espresso, some mint and earthy minerality. A truly wonderful wine and I would rate a solid 97-98. Open it if you have it. It's a meal in itself!

My first perfect score!! What can I say, from the very start a beautiful silky mouthfeel of beautiful floral then crushed berries then licorice and finally espresso flavors.... a finish that would not stop, literally 20 minutes long. If Italy had first growths, this would be it. A SUPER Tuscan on steroids, drinking absolutely amazingly now. Paired with foie gras, lamb chops, and chocolate cake.

Unbelievable smoothness with a tiny bit of acidity and a glorious wine at it's peak... I would not wait. Drink all you have. Color is changing... dark to brown, and it's at its peak of maturity. 94 points.

I have to say it was delicious, dark and filled with the california cassis fruit flavors. Not sweet or caramelly at all. Still, throughout the 3 hour dinner it remained a bit closed (tight) and did not reveal its full potential. A great wine but I will wait to open my second bottle for at least 6 more months.
  • George C ATLANTA commented:

8/15/15, 2:02 PM - did not wait quite the 6 months. it was definitely a bit more evolved. But still needs another few months. What surprised me this time was even though the wine had lots of mouth coating legs on the glass the finish was short.

Blind Cali Reds (Washington, DC): A brooding dark purple color. Takes a bit to open up aromatically, then shows black cherries, currant jam, mocha, deep violets and rich loamy soil. So much structure on the palate; the tannins show tons of grip, a bit of acid to keep it fresh. The black cherry and cassis tastes ripe, deep, but also tart. Lots of loam, tobacco leaf, and granite notes, accented by mocha, dark roast coffee and spiced cranberry sauce. Some black licorice and molasses on the finish. Big, such concentration, young, but beautiful and complex. Deserves to be buried for at least three-to-five before it probably comes out to show its best, but it will hold up for so long.

Drank it together with Thomas at Piment in Hamburg together with Clos Apalta 2005. The winner was clearly the Cal Cab. The nose is amazing, eukalyptus, mint. Strong powerful, a straightforwarded beast, very complex, mocha, vanilla, too young, lasting for at least 5 more years

Very pleased by how this wine showed at 10 years old. Decanted 2 hours, still very fruit forward with nice mix of red and black fruits, just the right amount of cedar notes, great mint nuance bringing kind of freshness over dark chocolate notes and fine tannins. Still has everything to keep in the cellar, but seems to enter it's drinking window.

Beautiful powerful wine, with firm, mouth puckering tannins that needs a good 2 hours decant before even tasting the first glass. Drunk last night with some very nice grass fed beef and complemented nicely with flavors of minerality, mushroom/terroir, crushed wild berries and espresso! delicious and definitely age worthy. 2004 was great for this wine.
The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle.

This bottle was smooth with silky berry flavors, no minerality but yes some mushroom and espresso at the long long long finish.... Outstanding! Hardly needed any decanting, good from the opening. Interesting how it evolved in the past 5 months. I would say this wine is drinking great right now.

From magnum, still very young and crisp, remained tight for pretty much the whole night. Fresh citrus nose with orchard fruit, more like a 1996 than a 1988, in this format will probably need another 5-10 years to reach maturity. Very fine bubbles and very well made.
