Truly delicious, dry and complex with a long finish. I don't mean to be crass, but it tastes like a clean woman. Never had that in a wine before. Again, I don't mean to offend anyone, it's actually a compliment on the wine. Amazing what terroir can deliver in flavors and a dry Mavrodaphne is amazing and rich. This wine makes it unnecessary to go out on an expensive date, it's a date in itself. Pop and pour.

2012 Bevan Cellars Ontogeny Oakville Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
The overwhelming vanilla/oak, Caymus type of flavor was a HUGE disappointment for this caliber wine. Had this wine 3 years ago and it was fantastic with the vanilla hidden or not there. This recent experience only accentuated the vanilla, not aging well and would give away or sell this wine rather than drink again.

Decanted 1 1/2 hours and then enjoyed for over an hour with steak, quite beautiful and representative of the Mouton terroir, deep garnet color and very substantial mouthfeel, long long finish, super smooth, and old world berries and seriousness. A great wine and drinking beautifully now, no tannins to speak of. Yet the fact that it breathed and we enjoyed over a 2 1/2 hour +window speaks of it's power. It kept evolving and we wished we had another bottle. Drink now and over the next 15 + years.

Classic St Estephe terroir, nice long finish, so smooth. It's truly drinking outstandingly here and highly recommend. Beautiful dark red, plum and graphite flavors. An excellent value and drinking above its price point. Buy and drink. 1 hour decant in bottle. Drank half bottle and corked the bottle... 2nd night was right there, had not missed a beat. So smooth, deep and complex. No rough edges.

P N P and enjoyed over 2 hours at dinner in Atlanta (Aria Restaurant, must try). What impressed us was that it was smooth, complex, rich and delicious , no sweetness but just a perfect blend of aromas and flavors providing the berries, cassis, hints of espresso so characteristic of classy Napa reds-- from the beginning to the end. No change, no evolution in the glass other than a brief moment when cherries really showed then back to the description above. Just an absolute beauty, no decant needed, but careful pouring there was a little bit of sediment. Enjoy now and likely for 3 more years.

Considering the youth of this remarkable Dom, I expected a light color with no hint of amber and a quick finish. Instead, this champagne, maybe because of the extraordinary vintage, is already darker straw/light amber, and that is indicative of the resulting beautiful, complex flavors, long finish and luscious mouth feel. I can't imagine what an incredible champagne this will be out of 750 ml in 10 years, and out of magnum in 20-25 years. No gunsmoke that is characteristic of well aged Dom (and Krug) but beautiful solid champagne, the best I've had this year. Cheers.

We drunk this last night, no decanting but did open the bottle and let it breathe for a good 45 minutes. It is a beautiful, complex wine that is reminiscent in both color (light red in some light, dark red in another), smell (barnyard, mushroom, earthy with some bouquet of flowers thrown in), and taste, totally graphite, of left bank St Estephe Bordeaux with some nice age. Beautiful mouthfeel and long finish. It has reached it's peak but we agreed that doesn't mean it will start declining anytime soon. It held it's own to the very last sip and was a beautiful wine and will continue drinking at this level for at least three more years.

Decanted for 90 minutes prior to a delicious steak dinner followed by flourless chocolate cake. It was a powerful wine, no rough edges, rich mouthfeel, cassis, chocolate, espresso and no hint of that caramelly, Caymus flavor that makes a wine lover want to use a spit bucket. The finish is very long and the wine evolves in the glass. Will it age... yes, it's still very powerful and it did take 90 minutes in the decanter and another hour of drinking to open beautifully, but it did keep evolving in the glass until the last sip. But it's drinking beautifully here and highly recommend it accompanied by a porterhouse, or new york strip, no vegetarian or seafood dishes with this one.

Had tonight with a 2 hour decant over a 3 hour dinner. Wine kept evolving but was always elegant, powerful, young and with a long finish. This was a perfectly preserved bottle and an excellent example of a rolls royce of wines. Drinking well now and has another 10 years. Notes of mushroom, espresso, pepper, just every sip a surprise and lots of glycerin to prolong the finish. What a wine!

Out of magnum, so some drinkability was expected, but this is absolutely dead without any promise. Better off drinking water. Disappointed, they must have forgotten the tannins in their winemaking.

Had yesterday at a great steak house in Atlanta-- Little Alley Steak -- from Magnum. I brought this from my cellar to our monthly wine dinner. Sloan was more like a Mike Tyson at his prime, very strong, muscular, with different dimensions, but the overwhelming profile is POWER... not a hint of that disgusting caramel sweetness, so prevalent in Caymus and other mainstream cabs, it had notes of cassis, blackberry, mint, espresso and even cedar and every sip was different. Loved it, learned a lot from it, but at the end of the day give me a Dominus, Poetry, Bond, Cardinale, Verite — those are more my own personal style. Those have a silky mouth feel and a long, gentle yet complex, lingering finish. Still, for an old style Cali Cab, the way they used to be blended to compete against first growth Left Bank Bordeaux, this is about as perfect as it gets.

The tasting notes on the back of the bottle are 100% accurate, so why reinvent the wheel? "An elegant wine, continuously evolving with brooding blackberry fruit, star anise, lavender and eucalyptus." I would add some glycerin, long finish and smooth mouth feel. A very solid effort, but again you must like eucalyptus etc...

Perhaps the finest Cali Pinot I've had... it has such complexity, smoothness, rich mouth feel, long finish and no rough edges at all. I think their 2012 vintage was stellar and stands above the rest. I had it upon release and it was delicious but tight, and the finish was therefore lacking. Now it seems to have let loose like a river of complex berry flavors and the wine evolves and changes beautifully through the course of a 2-3 hour dinner. This one will force you to enjoy it slowly and savor it. No decant necessary, pull the cork and pour. Highly recommend, if you can find it.

Had from Magnum, aerated and decanted for about 30 minutes only, while we started dinner with a champagne. Boy, this wine is drinking so amazing right now, deep garnet in color, smooth, complex with evolving flavors ranging from red currant, to cherries, to espresso / chocolate even, over a 3 hour dinner. No sign of tannins, and none of that Caymus style caramel /vanilla flavor (yuck). This was tremendously well made wine in the Bordeaux style. Dare I say it's at the peak or could even age a couple more years. Filter it, it does have some sediment. Just a mind boggling experience, in a blind tasting this would have been a Cheval Blanc contender or other top right bank Bordeaux! But it's from Napa! Wow!! They should use this wine to trick aspiring Sommeliers in the Master exam.

Drinking beautifully now. So balanced, powerful, dark ruby color... long, long delicious finish. I got powerful berries melding together with a little earth and some tar... just a beauty. Decanted for two hours and then poured back in the bottle and enjoyed at a local restaurant. If you have been waiting to open it, decant for a couple of hours-- the whole room will be permeated with the beautiful aroma and then enjoy.

A solid 96 rated wine... so smooth, not a rough edge in it, complex, a full mouth feel, long finish, delicious classic Cali cab flavors of dark crushed cherries, cassis, some dark chocolate, no hint of sweetness... just a beautiful Cali cab, complements steaks, chocolate deserts, hearty vegetables such as wild mushrooms.

What an almost amber colored beauty of a wine. This is complex with all the typical flavors of the blend, a benchmark effort aging gracefully! It's my last bottle of this phenomenal vintage. Bravo Jean-Charles!! Poetry in a bottle, great for drinking alone, or with fish / salad, or with a nice lemony desert!

Drinking great, with a very sophisticated mouth feel and taste, transports you to Bordeaux! A beautiful wine with a super long finish, could drink this for hours and never be bored. We enjoyed at dinner with Lafite 2003 and finished this one with a cigar later in the evening. Great companion to chocolate desert and nice cigar!

Had it next to the 2003 Cos D'Estournel, and even though both outstanding wines in their own right, the Lafite stood above. Hard to imagine a better wine... it had it all, structure, super long finish, delicious fruit mixed with the severity of graphite and espresso, young still but decanted it for 2 1/2 hours prior to drinking and that helped open it up. Dark ruby color. Just a beautiful wine, drinking great now if you like powerful, young and balanced.

Decanted for 2 hours and when poured was delicious, with a very beautiful aroma characteristic of Pauilac. Flavor was earthy, graphite, coffee/espresso, and jammy (strawberry was the consensus), all rounded up in a delicious mouthfeel with a super long, smooth and memorable finish. Dark color in this wine and cork was in perfect shape. Wine continued to evolve through the night, and after about five hours during our last sips it was losing strength. Very enjoyable and I would say drinking great right now!

Remarkable, beautiful, smooth, elegant, vibrant, super long delicious finish, you will taste this for over 20 minutes. Had it tonight with a delicious meal in Atlanta -- with tuna appetizer, lamb main dish and chocolate desert. This wine was a fine complement and we agreed it held it's on as a dish in itself. Drinking... amazingly now!! Truly one of the finest reds, much less just cabs, I've ever had, up there with Lafite and even Penfolds Grange as an experience.

Had a magnum last night that had been in cellar for 15 years. Nice dark blonde color, gentle but generous bubbles, taste and aroma of gun smoke so characteristic of well aged, age worthy champagnes, apricot, pear taste. Amazing! So fascinating that the wine did not change profile at all over a 2 hour period where we enjoyed it with lobster and caviar at the fabulous Atlas Restaurant in Atlanta! It was delicious from the first sip to the last and stayed strong.

Drinking so deliciously right out of the bottle... the first impression was the dark cherry pie aroma that permeated the room on opening, and then the first sip was wow! fresh baked bread toped with berry jam. Nice, long finish, strong legs on this one. Load up as I think it's great now and will likely age for another five years.

Wow... so amazing from the first sip to the last (3 hour dinner). Maintained the smoothness, intrigue, cassis and just plain benchmark napa profile throughout. A true powerhouse. Happy I have another bottle, will drink in a year. Tannins... there, but not dominant... but they are there, and so the wine definitely has ageability potential. The color... Purple red. NO fade on the edges. The finish... goes on and on. This wine competes against the Schaffers easily.

Enjoyed from magnum last night! Bottle popped with vigor and bubbles were perfect. Darkish straw color. We drank alongside a 2004 Dom and the color difference was clear and evident. Right away the characteristic old, pre LVMH gunsmoke flavor on the palate with a lingering finish leaving a distinct impression. Over the course of an hour evolved into burned caramel which then mellowed out to caramel.... Absolutely stunning wine. The table agreed it was likely drinking at it's absolute peak, with perhaps another 5-7 years left for aging. But why wait. Prepare a wonderful meal and enjoy this champagne, preferably from magnum.

Cherry flavor and some tobacco too, sipped it first with some hearty cheeses and then with roasted lamb and potatoes. Delicious but needs to age min 5-10 years prior to opening up fully. This has surprising tannins and was tight throughout the evening. Have a few bottles, so hope to revisit in a few years and give it a new review.

I have to say it was delicious, dark and filled with the california cassis fruit flavors. Not sweet or caramelly at all. Still, throughout the 3 hour dinner it remained a bit closed (tight) and did not reveal its full potential. A great wine but I will wait to open my second bottle for at least 6 more months.

Another wonderful experience, a year after having had the first bottle of this amazing wine. Smooth from the open, and even better through a 3 hour long dinner, decanted due to sediment. Boy... the long long finish and heavy mouthfeel make this wine a chewy meal in itself. Benchmark blend Cab wine, lovely and highly recommended.

Pure Bordeaux elegance... delicious from the first sip, enjoyed over a 3 hour multi course dinner tonight in Atlanta (Restaurant Eugene). Just an elegant lady of a wine, with a long lasting impression. We commented we didn't need any food, this was companion enough. The terroir expression was pure silky, chalky old world Bordeaux. Highly recommend. Open it and drink it , and drink again in 10 years and compare.

Drinking exceedingly well. Right after decanting, first glass had a very pronounced floral/red rose note. Absolutely stunning. Not sure decanting is needed as the wine ran clear. Dark, crimson color, heavy legs, long long finish. An absolute pleasure to sip on it's own or pair with lamb or duck.

Very one dimensional, a bit sweet with tastes of maple syrup, the same from beginning to end. Much better can be found at this price point. They spent a lot of $ and effort on the appearance of this "special" bottling, which is always a concern, since what we want is great wine first and foremost, you can't drink the glass or the label. Suitable for an unsophisticated pallet; a dominican cigar vs. a fine cuban. An expense account dinner wine where a client is being taken out and the supplier wants to impress on appearance and brand, vs. real taste and value. Maybe a tad better than Silver Oak or Jordan.

Deserving of a good meal-- I had it with rack of lamb and a nice souffle. Smooth, cassis and blackberry flavors, not a rough edge. Long finish. Requires an hour decanting and from then on opens up for a very long time. We enjoyed it over a 3 hour dinner. Later we had a Georges de Latour 2009 which in comparison was one dimensional.
