This was utterly brilliant. No formal note, but so much intensity on the nose. An incredible amount of perfume and flowers. Perfectly balanced. Long finish. So, so good.

    How good is it!
Really impressive for a "Villages", the color is brilliant ruby, the aromas of cherries, raspberries, spices spring from the glass.
On the palate, the wine is chiseled, concentrated, harmonious, expanding, the tannins are fine and the finish very long.
    Is already drinking beautifully.

It is exactly at this stage that I like aged wines. The tannins are supple but still quite severe, characteristic of the vintage everywhere in France. Great success.

Tasted blind; immediately shows some of the class and ripeness of the 2006 vintage. Lots of very pure, mineral laden scents of yellow orchard fruits, lemon, biscuity aromas that give way to more defined floral notes that only add elegance. Great long, fresh finish with lifted acidity and chalky minerals. Unfolds to more brown spices with air time; incredibly layered. 94+ today.

Piedmont Tasting (Plum Market - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. They opened this 4 hours pre-tasting, and decided to decant, which I think was well rewarded. Rich black cherry with slightly sweet spice. Very good balance, moderate concentration. Still slightly astringent on finish, this should soften with another 2-3 years in the cellar. My favorite of the tasting.

2015 Marcel Juge Cornas Syrah
Pretty svelte for the vintage, although still big dense fruit and obviously needs much time. Savory with layers of goodness (floral notes came out after hard swirling which I usually don’t get with Juge). Beautiful wine. So sad we won’t see this anymore.
  • angryphoton commented:

2/1/18, 10:46 AM - Juge is retiring as he is really old, no one is taking over so 2015 is his last vintage.

  • angryphoton commented:

2/4/18, 10:53 AM - You are correct, he is already officially retired years ago. 2015 is the last vintage he made wine with this loophole.

SO GOOD. Opened for over a hour before I got to it and it's really fleshed out and full of that graphite/mineral texture that is high elevation cornas. Beautiful deep concentrated fruit. Not much more to say. 2013 is such a great cornas vintage.

You can see the relation to the regular 2011 Saumur, but this kicks it up a notch with a bit more depth and complexity, hints of mint and basil. Retains the 11 elegance and earth, dialed up to... 11

Tuesday Night $20-$40 Double Blind (Bin 75): Wow, this is not what I was expecting from a young vintage of this wine, it shows phenomenal balance, sweet but not overripe fruit, pleasant grip, larger alcohol but it doesn't stand out, also good acid keeps this fresh; a complete package that I expect to age gracefully for 20+ years; one of the most exciting young wines to date.

Coravin 6/20/14: Surprisingly deep golden color for such a young wine; intense but complex nose with beeswax, lanolin, citrus fruit, apricot, very slight baking spice; palate is medium-full bodied, fully dry, good acidity at first and throughout while still being a bit waxy and coating on the palate (good!), a bit jarring at first with the flavors like each thing hits you in turn without gliding into the next, needs a lot of time to integrate, some white fruit throughout that fills into apricot towards the end, great freshness, very slight salinity towards the end; finish is long and ends with a minerality/salinity not seen on most of the rest of the palate, high acidity is refreshing for the next sip. This is fascinating. A completely different experience from every other Chenin Blanc I'v'e tried, this is obviously very high quality, young, needs a lot of time to integrate, and is a serious wine. I could just smell the nose all day. A great buy at K&L given the discount, and my last two bottles will be spread out over the next 10-15 years. 94-95++ with potential for even more greatness.
Update: As this warms up, it gets even more integrated and even more complex on the palate with some citrus rind. This is a true world-class wine even now, and I'm looking forward to what it will become.
Opened 6/26/14: Still just as wonderful. This is a world class 95+ point wine with great complexity, great acidity on the palate, mouthwatering flavors and aromas.

Clear, perfect gold colour, good legs. Clean, med intensity, overwhelming oxidised smell that morphs an older Gewürztraminer petrol taint - most unusual for Chablis. The smells are too strong to sense the underlying fruit. Dry, med. body, med alcohol, no tannins, light on acidity, again a creamy texture, honey, molasses, green gage, slight minerality, low intensity, slight lemon yet a short finish.
