Outside dining at Juanita & Maude's in Albany. 6 hour decant. Served blind to Charles, Walter and Michael. Purple in color. Very aromatic. Bold prune, dried apricot and dried fig flavors. Long finish. All guess vintage Port (but all at least 2 decades too young). Almost certain to still be great in 2030. A profound Port!

Watching Super Bowl with Walter. Decanted for 3 hours. Served along side a 1989 La Lagune to accompany a savory pork loin roast that Walter had made. Dark ruby in color. Berries and leather om the nose.
Superb from the get-go in the mouth. Velvety yet complex. Evolved during the game, but remained at high level until consumed. Must be at peak.

Watching Super Bowl with Walter. Decanted for 3 hours. Served along side a 1990 La Lagune to accompany a savory pork loin roast that Walter had made. Cigar box and cedar on the nose. In the mouth we do have some fruit (dark cherry and plum), but primarily tobacco, earth tones, and nuances of meat. Initially, ight to medium body, it added substantial weight throughout the game. Although it never quite reached the level of the 1990 La :agune, this was a delicious wine, nonetheless.

With leftover holiday dinner. Pale yellow in color. Lemon zest and apple on the nose. In the mouth, sweet white peaches, citrus, a nuance of slate and a touch of salt. Nice acidity sweetness balance. Likely to become even more complex over the next decade, but too delicious a food wine to currently resist.

Sunday Football with Walter (49'ers vs Saimts). 2.5 hour decant. Bright red in color. Floral (lavender?) aromatics. Dark cherries, black currents and raspberries on the palate (Surprisingly fruity for this age). Tingling spices and herbs in the background. A touch of mocha. Tannin essentially subsided. Still a bit of acidity. Lengthy finish. A beautiful wine!

Sunday Football with Walter (49'ers vs Saimts). 2.5 hour decant. Brownish purple in color. Heavy cherry cough syrup on the nose. Bold flavors of dark cherry licorice amd leather on the palate. There is a barnyard nuance (Beaucastel like, not unpleasant to me).Full bodied with some tannin still remaining. Big finish. I enjoyed it.

Along with Danny, celebrating Estie's birthday at home. We have take-out from China Village in Albany. Medium yellow in color. Aromatics of white stone fruit. White nectarines, poached pears and a bit of citrus on the palate. Bold. Nice sweetness-acidity trade off. Good finish. Certainly an excellent companion with our dinner.

Thursday Night Football with Walter (49'ers vs Seahawks). Walter brings this and indicates it had been decanted for 2 hours. Purple red in color. Nice nose, but to me it is initially reticent on both the nose and palate. After an additional hour, it begins to blossom with a flowery nose and dark fruit in the mouth. Some of the inital chalkiness remains. I save some for my dinner the next day.
This was even better than my last glass on the previous evening. Still a nice bouquet with some ollaleberry pie flavor and some beef au jus nuance. I also got a touch of cardamom. Good body. This should age nicely for a while.

Thursday night Football with Walter (49'ers vs Seahawks). Two hour decant. Medium red color. Floral nose. Initially surprising dark fruit on the palate followed by the expected earth, leather and garrigue. Medium body with tannin subsided. Went nicely with grilled cheese sandwiches and meatballs. After 90 minutes, it began to fade a bit. Still a very nice drink that may have peaked a little earlier.

Sunday afternoon football with Walter (49'ers vs Patriots). Two hour decant. Served along side the 1989 Sociando-Mallet. violet purple in color. Black currents on the nose. Somewhat muted flavors of dark fruit on the palate. Unlike the 1989, initially this wine seemed closed and a bit chalky, but after 90 minutes, the chalkiness disappeared and this blossomed into something wonderful,. Flavors of blackberries, cocoa, and red licorice. Herbs and cedar in the background. This was the reverse of many of my 1989 vs 1990 Bordeaux tastings where typically the 1990 js immediately great, and the 1989 opens later. Both were very good, but I suspect this 1990 may go another 5-10 years.

Sunday afternoon football with Walter (49'ers vs Patriots). Two hour decant. Served along side the 1990 Sociando-Mallet. Purple in color. Dark berries and minerals on the nose. Surprisingly jammy on the palate with nuances of cedar and cinnamon. Delicious from the get go. Smooth, tannins resolved. Nice finish but faded a bit after an additional 3 hours.

Watching Sunday Night Football with Walter (Eagles vs. 49'ers). Decanted 3 hours before serving. During decant perfumey aroma wafted through the kitchen. Purple-ruby in color. On the palate, I get dark fruit i.e. blueberries, cassis, but particularly dark cherries (I might have guessed Pinot Noir if tasting blind).Walter tastes cinnamon-nutmeg, perhaps allspice. This is a supple velvety wine yet complex. Good finish. Delicious. I believe this wine is at peak, but could stay there for some time.

Watching the 49'ers vs Jets injury brigade with Walter (wearing masks, social distance). 2 hour decant. Purple in color. On the nose I get dark fruit and a little cigar box. Initially somewhat tannic and chalky, but after 20 minutes, this subsides. On the palate, I get cassis, blueberries and a bit of leather. Walter says "cinnamon", similarly I'm thinking nutmeg. Walter says "the peak may have been a year ago". Because of the initial tannin,I'm thinking the peak may be a year away. We'll see. Still, a very nice wine for a California cabernet from the "troubled" 1998 vintage.

Rosh Hashana dinner (from Saul's in Berkeley). Opened one hour before dinner. Dark ruby in color. Dark cherries and spice box on the nose. In the mouth we have black raspberries, black pepper, some meat nuance and the expected CdP garrigue. A little tannin, but seems almost elegant. Went nicely with my beef brisket.

Burnt orange and creme bruleee in the mouth along with nuances of something tropical. Sweetness nicely balanced with a bit of acidity. Hopefully, a sweeter year ahead.

Celebrating a couple of birthdays with family. Ordered Italian takeout from Little Star in Albany, so I decided to open 2 nice Italian wines (had this along side a 2000 Scavino Barolo Cannubi). Decanted two hours before serving. Dark in color. Black cherries and a hint of smoke on the nose. Dark plums, sweet soy and a touch of cocoa on the palate. Seems very smooth and elegant for a BdM. Delicious now, but I'm not sure how much longer it will remain this good.

With family, enjoying take-out from China Village in Albany. PnP. (opened along side a 2003 Donnhoff Spatlese.) Straw gold in color. Lemon zest and apples on the nose. In tje mouth I get honeydew melon, citrus with some minerlity (slate ?) in the background. Nicely balanced with good acidity, a measure of sweetness and that purity I look for in Donnhoff's Rieslings. This most likely has many years to gp.

Take out sushi with Estie and Danny. PnP. Pale gpld in color. White nectarine and lemon zest on the nose. Apples, apricots amd more citrus (lime?) on the palate. A bit sweeter than Spatlese, but not dessert wine like. Excellent balance. A touch of gravel in the background, but I suspect additional minerality will show itself in future years. Long finish. We loved this wine.

Wow! What a surprise. This bottle was given to me by my son and daughter-in-law (who live in Oregon) on my last birthday. I love Oregon pinot noir, but I was unfamiliar with this producer (and the vintage was unheralded). PnP at home with dinner from Gregoires in Berkeley. Medium ruby in color with red and dark berries on the nose. Initially slightly acidic, but this blew off quickly adding body and depth within minutes. Cherries, black raspberries and pomegranate on the palate with baking spices and other complexities in the background. Good finish. Almost as good the second night with only the finish being a bit shorter.

Father's Day dinner (takeout from 310 Eatery) with Estie and Danny. Opened one hour before dinner. Wine just as good, but notes a bit different from those I posted in December. Floral nose. No hoi sin, but certainly raspberry-blackberry overtone. Initially smooth and somewhat lush, but various CdP complexities arrived over time. It just got better throughout the evening.

PnP from half bottle with dinner. A tad darker than typical pinot. Initially hesitant on the nose, but opened nicely after a few minutes. A little black cherry in the mouth with some earth and background complexities arriving a bit later. Nicely balanced, and seemed full bodied to me. Good now, but likely to improve.

Brought to the Lehman's for our annual "pancakes" on Shrove Tuesday. I've had good luck with my 2007 CdPs, but this was even better than expected. Although I only had one glass of this before the bottle was emptied, it was quite memorable. Purple-ish ruby in color. Dark fruit on the nose. Blackberries and dark cherries in the mouth, certainly garrigue and an extra touch of sweetness. There is an intensity that lasts through the finish. It likely has more time, but delicious right now.

Served blind to Walter. Michael and Charles at Lalimes in Berkeley. PnP. Brioche and a touch of orange peel in the nose. On the palate, Charles says "caramel". Walter says "burnt peach", and Michael says "apricots, , rich, but with lots of minerality". I'm getting butterscotch, citrus, and some kind if tropical fruit.Much going on prior to a penetrating finish. Walter guesses 2005 Meursault. Because id the minerality, Michael guesses 2010 high end Chablis (Raveneau?). Charles guesses 2005 Chassagne. Michael says "it may be too rich for a Chassagne." All good guesses, but ut is a Chassagne. But then it is a Ramonet (Morgeot). It went nicely with my sea bass.

With Danny at El Mono in El Cerrrito. Another excellent 2007 CdP (I've had really good luck with these.) PnP. Good from the get go, yet still improved through out the evening. Deep crimson in color. Dark fruit and violets (?) on the nose. In the mouth, there are black currants, blackberries and a bit of kirsch. along with some herbs (garrigue) and a hint of licorice, in the background. Concentrated, perhaps some tannin still remains. Good finish. Went well with our beef heart and even our paella (excellent foil for the smoky rice). Likely has a number of years to go, but why wait?

PnP. Golden yellow in color. Tropical fruit on the nose. Flavors of mango, passion fruit and perhaps peach. Caranel in the background with a bit of saline.Good acidity. The usual Donnhoff "purity". Watching the NFL divisional playoffs with Walter (Vikings vs 49'ers). Walter makes a delicious 3 mushroom "impossible" beef Burgundy, so I open this. Garnet red in color. Violets, kirsch and a bit of sweet tea on the nose. In the mouth, I taste cherries, raspberries and yes, mushrooms. Medium body, with nice acidity and still a touch of tannin. NFL wildcard weekend football with Walter (Titans vs Patriots). PnP. Brick red in color. Dried cherries and flowers on the nose. Bkack cherries plums and cocoa on the palate with leather and eucalyptus in the background. Medium body wuth tannins fully resolved. Not as powerful as the bottle I had in 2015, but still a very enjoyable wine after a quarter century. (The shorter finish was perhaps the most notable difference.) Went nicely with my beef sandwich.

Port tasting at Mathew's on New Year's Eve, so I bring this. Decanted 5 hours earlier. Dark purple in color. Chocolate orange peel and dried cherries on the nose. However it appeared somewhat closed on the palate. At the tasting I only had one glass of this and could not seem to coax it open. Fortunately when I decanted this I had set aside a glass which I tasted a week later. What a difference! This was now open for business with flavors of honey raisin fig compote and a dash of nutmeg and clove. Surprisingly long finish! Conclusion: May still need time.
