Just saying.

2011 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Chardonnay

What a ballerina. There is some age showing but it is so well balanced. Really lovely reduction (even day 2) and whipped cream tendency. The mineralty of this wine is simply killer. Had next to Dom Perignon 2012 and while that wine had broader shoulders and offered up some red berries the Comtes just smashed it out of the park finesse-wise.

8/23/22, 2:57 AM - Thanks I have the choice between exactly these two wines at a restaurant I just booked so I guess I'lll try the Comtes, then!

The 2006 Jean Grivot Richebourg exhibits opulent Vosne Romanee scent with superb richness and intensity. Tasted blind – A serious bouquet of dark fruits with good dose of new oak. Muscular with inner floral note and liquorice spices of Vosne Romanee. Classic winemaking, destemmed and generously oaked. Grand Cru weight, hints of savoury note and the drying tannins on the palate reminds me of 2006, a vintage that is savoury with slightly austere tannins for red Burgundy. Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees (right next to Richebourg)? 2006? Meo Camuzet? (88/100)
  • Atreyu commented:

1/20/21, 1:57 PM - you use adjectives as superb, serious, grand cru and are guessing vosne 1er. Thank you for the note, but 88 points seems extremely low for such an assession.

1999 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Chardonnay
Skränmunkarna May 2014 (Minervaskolan, Umeå, Sweden.): Blind.
Light yellow.
Dark, mellow and a rather unattractive "spicey" nose that was attractive to some tasters, but not to me. Towards sweaty teenager.
In the mouth, it has a fabulous, creamy mouthfeel. But... This murky special character towards cummin and Mexican food does not do well to marry my taste buds.

My score is for mouthfeel and the fabulous concentration and intensity of this wine.
But:

I would NEVER buy this!

8/8/14, 1:10 AM - This must have been a bad bottle. There is absolutely nothing dark about a good one. The one we opened yesterday was perhaps the brightest champagne I ever had.

Cork was wet. Both bottles were oxidized but showing hints of former greatness.

6/25/14, 1:36 AM - perhaps it would be better to mark it as flawed instead of a point score, since they were oxidized.

A real treat! Lovely purity and lift. Very appealing nose with yellow apples, chalk, flint, a light presence of oyster meat and gunpowder. Good length and delicious creaminess. Excellent with norwegian lobster. Liked it a lot. (93-95 pts)

classic mesnil aromas of flint and lime. Medium bodied with a long finish but not very complex.

2/7/14, 2:19 AM - Den er pur ung og trenger lagring. Jeg vil si ti år er absolutt minimum og den bør nok helst ligge til 15 års alder.

Interesting DP with the beautiful black label. Surprisingly open. Lovely fragrance of mixed citrus. Lots of soft citrus fruit on the palate. The acidity is lower than usual, which may portend a shorter life than the typical DP.
  • Atreyu commented:

1/8/14, 10:47 AM - high acidity is not important for a long life. RE: 1959, 1976.

The big names in champagne do keep a high standard, but if one takes the time (and money) to explore some less know brands one can also conclude that there are champagnes out there that are just as good, if not better, for 20-30 euro less.
This is true also for the PR brut rosé 2004. A very good wine, but why not seek out a less known rosé?
  • Atreyu commented:

11/11/13, 12:10 PM - because most small producer rosé are simply crap, or interesting for a unique style more than outright quality. Classical vintage rose from small producers are a true rarity, Paul Bara Special Club is about the only one I can think of.

Simple, sweet but rather good.
  • Atreyu commented:

10/20/13, 5:29 AM - I have had many bottles of this and it is consistent with previous ones. This was the second from my case, and I see I also scored the previous bottle similarly. This was most likely a 2010 disgorgement. I love Pol Roger vintage, but I think the NV is not up to scratch.

Again an oxidised Burgunian wine! And for this caliber it's a bloody shame! Bought in auction so my 60 euro's are gone...
  • Atreyu commented:

9/25/13, 4:12 AM - I'm not so sure. There was recently a tasting of 20+ vintages of Dom. Leflaive wines in Norway, and 70% of the bottles were reportedly oxidized.

Plump yellow fruit,, lacking freshness. Probable 06 or 07 base, nowhere near the quality of the 08 base.
  • Atreyu commented:

7/14/13, 1:58 PM - I cellar most my NV champagne for at least a couple of years. Too bad so few put the disgorgement date on the bottle so you'll have an idea what to expect. I find the pol reserve a bit too sweet, but the acidity should catch up to the sugar with age so it might be a good idea to lay them down.

We are not sure if there are issues of bottle variation here but the bottle, cork and all looked very good. The nose was on the light side, light toasty, rich fruit scent. Teh problem was that on the palate it had almost zero vitality. Where is that Dom precission and focus and life? Note sure what is going on here but not of Dom level. Maximum crouwd pleasing power though.. 90 performance this time round and looking at our notes a lot of variability over the last few years

This second bottle from a case opened two months ago was much, much better than the previous one. The nose immediately grabs you with a forceful minerality normally reserved for the most prestigious champagnes. It is folllowed by forceful fruit with hints of vanilla and tertiary notes of coffee just starting to emerge. The combination of great poise and focus with a rich and enveloping mouthfeel completes the package. I know it isn't supposed to be this good but this really is the best non vintaged champagne I've ever had and that includes Krug that's been cellared for 15+ years. Somebody faked my Charles! I really can't go below 94 on this one and I'm leaving about two points on the table just because it looks so stupid to score it that high... Drinking at absolute peak right now. But the last bottle wasn't like this, so...
  • Atreyu commented:

2/14/13, 10:42 PM - This was the 2008 disgorgement. I had the 2009 disgorgement in 2010 when it was first released and I was disappointed by it. A lot of yellow fruits and not nearly as much power as the 2008 and later disgorgments, sorry... I had the new label 2011 disgorgment at the domaine on Monday and it was amazing, even better than the one in my note.

This is a wonderful wine. It seems to be at its peak. I was nicely balanced with fruit, oak and acid. It was a lovely wine to sip by itself.
