2015 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville
This is way to young. It was delivered today so I had to try it. So here goes. Lots of heat, with notes of smoked meats, bacon and cough syrup. Cough syrup is almost right on the button.

4/8/19, 3:55 AM - I get 4 cases a year of Far Niente. 2 of which is the current vintage release. In my opinion you can't go wrong with Far niente. Even the bad years are really good.

This is certainly getting better as it matures. This is the best showing its had yet. The best year Gloria Ive had was the 2009.

2/25/19, 2:34 PM - Wine is a natural product so who knows. I haven't had any Chateau Gloria that was near as good as the 2009 as of today. But who knows what the future brings...

Really great nose. Soft and elegant. Musty and dusty with red fruits and burnt coffee beans. Very much like an aged Bordeaux.

What a piece of crap! Value is garbage! This was the 2nd bottle we had. Regular caymus is better and not just for $100 Cheaper. If you want want to drop that money buy Spottswoode for a 100 and the same price.
  • floridawinedrkr commented:

7/24/18, 3:35 PM - I realize we all have different tastes but I can't drink the regular caymus. The SS is really a great wine but it is very rich and teeth staining. My wife says its to sweet for her and the heat of Florida its to sweet for me some times also. I can see how some people may not like it.

  • floridawinedrkr commented:

7/24/18, 4:50 PM - Yea I agree. The Caymus SS is a great wine no doubt. And I dont like spottswoode but a lot of people do. If you love caymus the review he posted would certainly offend you no doubt. We drank 5 bottles of the 2013 Caymus SS on Monday. Its not crap in my opinion.

Pretty good actually. Lighter in body. Red fruits, mushrooms, tea leaves, smoke and burnt wood. Finish was what held back a higher score.
  • floridawinedrkr commented:

5/20/18, 5:05 PM - Well this is the first wine from Lebanon I have ever had but rich to me is Caymus special selection, Harlan, Bond, Realm, Maybach to name a few. This wine was certainly not that. And since I drank it at capital grille in Naples by my home I would have no idea how they stored it or where it has been since 2005. But I have had a lot of big wines in my life and this wine was not big in any way to me.

Still a massive wine with huge oak. 15.5% alcohol. Lots of power. This is an in your face type of wine. Not subtle or subdued. But well balanced and loads of flavors dance across your mouth. This evolves constantly as it opens. This needs 3-5 hours to start to settle down. Comes out a little hot.
  • floridawinedrkr commented:

Wine started out with lots of Oak. As time went on it seemed to become very thin, flabby and become very sweet. Was very tight. Perhaps needs more time in the bottle. Myself and my wife did not care for this at all. We didn't finish the bottle.

I got to say I think it may be better than the 2013 or perhaps just more approachable. Really outstanding. Massive depth without being overly extracted and overly rich & sweet. Smooth, sexy, and really balanced. Chocolate, berries, vanilla extract, and sweetened coffee with cream. Flavors are very defined and absolutely outstanding. It dances on entry. I said wow. 96 may be low. The finish is longer than a minute. This will be a blockbuster.
  • floridawinedrkr commented:

1/29/17, 5:45 PM - Yea its a 2014. They all need time. Thats why I said it "will" be a blockbuster. I loved it right now and usually dont like 2013 & 2014's just yet. I prefer older vintages.

I'll be the first to say it, maybe not the last...this is probably not worth the extra money from the regular Spring Mountain Cab ('13). This wine is currently going for $250 in my area vs $70 for the regular Cab.

One of the things this has is a lot of grippy tannins on the finish...a longer finish. It has very high volume, full throttle acidity and dark fruit. Second day was better. Taster csimm1161 echoed a lot of my experience with this wine. Second day saw more depth. I think I will buy more of the regular '13 Cab.

Upon opening it was like Minute Maid Blueberry juice and Welchs Grape juice. Couldn't drink it on day 1.

Day 2 It has settled down and is much more drinkable but still has lots of blueberry and grape juice notes. Finish is dry with Oak and alcohol . Still haven't decided if I like it yet.

Im to impatient and I dont have enough room to store that many bottle. I only buy whats ready to go for the most part. But I believe this bottle needs a lot of time. No big deal, its just wine.

Amazingly rich Bordeaux nose with hints of vanilla & carmel. Very smooth, deep, rich mouth feel. Mouth coating almost syrupy mouth feel. Very dark almost black in color. Balanced very well, blueberry & Raspberry pie fruits dominate throughout. Slight heat on finish but we believe this would have burned off if we decanted it. Excellent wine. Really enjoyed. This finished 2nd for the night.

Drank this with David Pearson (CEO Opus One) along with the 2000, 2005, 2010. Sat next to him at dinner Friday & Saturday at the Naples winter wine festival. The 2012 has a slight nose of dusty & Musty bordeaux. It doesn't smell like California at all. It comes in layers of evolving waves across your palate. Lots going on. Lots of chocolate, cola, Asian spices, tobacco, with some musty notes.

Tasted at the winery. Lacked the depth I would expect from Shafer HSS. Not much of anything going on. Seemed flat and one demential. We had a 2002 and 2010 Shafer HSS with us also and the 2011 was miles behind. Not even in the same league. 10 people in the tasting and no one was impressed with this at the stage it was at. I have consumed loads of Shafer HSS and this was perhaps the weakest one I have consumed. Perhaps this will turn around with some time.
  • floridawinedrkr commented:

10/12/15, 4:12 PM - I agree keeping up with the 2002 is difficult and the 2010 was perhaps better than the 2002 so the 2011 had some tough competition no doubt. But most 2011's I have had are not great including the Shafer HSS. I dont think I have had any 2011's that were amazing all thought the 2011 Caymus SS was not horrible. Just a bad year and I will do my best to avoid the vintage from all vintners. The 2012's are just to good.

  • floridawinedrkr commented:

Tasted this in good company. It certainly is flawless, but it is also without any character. Typical overripe fruit, alcohol level where it no longer is invited back to the dinner table. I do not expect it to age very well in the sense of improving. The lack of complexity was appalling next to a nice bottle of Cos and a lesser vintage, but beautifully drinking bottle of Vosne-Romanee

A decent bottle but very different from the 2005 Far niente Cave collection. A little disjointed and some heat. Not horrible but not amazing and not what I expected. The cave collection 2005 bottle we drank was ridiculous. I wouldn't buy this again for its price point over the cave collection if thats how its going to be. Perhaps this was stored improperly.
  • floridawinedrkr commented:

9/6/15, 4:42 AM - We opened both them side by side and however or whatever they do with them, the cave collection bottle was very different. Actually completely different. I did however buy the 2005 Cave collection at Far niente last year and I did not get the other 2005's from the winery. So perhaps someone stored them improperly. There was 8 of us who tasted them Blind and all preferred the Cave collection.

  • floridawinedrkr commented:

9/6/15, 6:13 AM - And I guess that was the point of my review. Both 2005's were so different we were shocked. I noticed you didn't have any cave collection in your cellar. Maybe order a 2005 cave collection from Far Niente and try it yourself against one of your 2005's and see how it comes out for you. I am interested to know.

  • floridawinedrkr commented:

9/8/15, 3:28 AM - You can buy the cave collection wines direct from far niente. That's where I purchase mine from. I am a member of the cave collection. So if you are concerned about buying poorly stored bottles simply buy direct. They also have very good prices . I get 12 bottles of cave collection reds per year for about $110 per bottle.

Expected this to be better than the 2004 and it was not at all. The 2006 was weaker, thinner, flatter, and had less dimension that the 2004. I was not impressed and it was not a memorable wine. The 2004 was a "WOW" wine.

But dont get me wrong, this is still a very nice wine. I simply had higher hopes. We did not decant either. Perhaps that would helped.

This Futo has rounded out, integrated, and even better than the bottle I had last November. The last bottle was slutty in a way like a girl walking around your house naked. • floridawinedrkr commented:

7/19/15, 7:05 PM - No its not worth $650. Too many amazing wines like Shafer Hillside, Colgin, Hundred acre, and Bryant (to name a few) that you can get for half that price that are mind blowing wines. The more Harlans I drink the more I think they aren't worth the price. We drank a 2009 last night and it was simply out classed by wines half the price.

Not really my style. On a night filled with big cabs this fell well short to the 2002 bond vecina, 1991 & 2006 Shafer Hillside select, and 1999 Robert Mondavi reserve to kalon as well as the 2008 kistler natelie pinot.
It was week and flabby. Seemed to have no body or length on the finish what so ever. Way to thin and light to me. Not my style. It got lost behind some great wines.

First I have to say I dont drink a lot of wines from France. We drink a lot of high end Napa cult cabs.
Upon first sip its lighter in body, darker ruby red color, with light edges. The color is really amazing. A beautiful dark Violet color. Nose of black berries and flowers. Good fruit up front with a lighter mouth feel. Easy to drink. Not heavy what so ever. Flavors of raspberry candy, flowers, oak, dust. The finish just wasn't all together upon opening. It finished somewhat off from what a bottle at this price should deliver. Parker said it will drink best from 2018 on. So maybe it just needs time to come around. The potential is there for 100 points. Still spectacular right now though.

We drink a lot of Shafer HSS and the 2008's are not ready to be consumed and have not showed their best stuff yet. Over the last 2 days we have drank this 2008 as well as 2005, 2006, and (2) 1991's. The 2008 as it is still an excellent bottle was certainly disjointed as far as Shafer HSS are concerned. It was still enjoyable but it was not what the others were. The finish was rough, it was rough through the mid palate. It wasn't what an HSS usually is and we have drank everything from 1996-2009 as well as the 1991's. We have a very large collection of Shafers. We decanted this bottle for 4 hours and I do not believe it would have improved much with a longer decant. It needs a few more years in the bottle to come around but I do not believe this will ever be a superstar for Shafer. Not even close to the 2001,2002,& 2004's.

Unfortunately we popped and poured this wine at the Brazilian Court Palm Beach. This wine was very approachable now but needs more time in the bottle for sure. Excellent wine, very dark, and inky in color. Nose of a rich bordeaux, with vanilla and spices. We really enjoyed this bottle. We rated this a 97 because we think a 5 hour decant would have made this an excellent wine tonight ( and it was still good without the decant). Zachy's Wine Auction - Winter 2014 (Smith & Wollensky (48th & 3rd Ave)): Let me first start with a wow - this wine was just fantastic and I am very glad we have three bottles in our cellar and would happily have been in the bidding for the 3 more on offer at the auction yesterday if I hadn't had to step out. Started off much more closed down and less approachable than the Hundred Acre, but only took it maybe 20 minutes to come around. I think it was drinking @ it's peak around an hour after opening although still lots going on 4 hours later. Coffee, cinnamon, currant. The fruit is just a hint of flavor in the overall wine. Great earth. It's so wonderful and beautiful and if I called the Solaia elegant this is another level of that. It was a show-stopper.
