2009 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend
2/9/2019 - Guzzzler Likes this wine:
97 points
Decanted for 11 hours.
Fabulous nose. Summer fruits, summer pudding, fruit licqueur.
Massive on the palate. Brilliant attack of fruit and acidity. Tannins smothered by the fruit. Almost an element of vanilla custard on the nose. Bit of charcoal and smoke. Cinnamon and clove on the nose.
Very long finish. Slightly saline and bitter fruits.
After 13 hours in decanter the bitterness subsides. The fruit keeps on coming. Beautiful. Finer tannins emerge, and if anything, this gets more balanced.
Still a blockbuster on the fruit. Just wonderful.
Obviously still too young, and suggest future bottles are opened the night before.
This will obviously keep getting better.

2/10/19, 12:38 AM - ‘Fraid Not. It was opened in the morning, and I only returned in the evening. Not much risk in my mind, given the other notes on this wine. I am not absolutely convinced that this will go for the next 40 years, but it will for the next 20.
