Nose: Dark berries, thyme, strawberries.

Palate: Full entry with lots of fruit and some herbs. Mid-palate has licorice and ammonium chloride, continuing in the aftertaste.

    12/3/23, 7:40 PM - Hello Ozric,
Ammonium chloride? Does it logically follow that you occasionally sip tincture of ammonium chloride as an aperitif or night cap? Please describe the nose, palate and aftertaste. Thanks! - Winedupe

Maybe this bottle was defective? but note to self - don't take the advice of only 2 individuals for some unknown wine. Too sweet, and grape juice-ish.

PnD. Let air for 2hrs.

Consistent with previous notes. Solid with grip fruit freshness and complexity. Great value. I predict a WS Top 100 selection

Very prescient call! Thanks for your consistent ratings. Based on your notes, I snagged 2 cases at $15/bottle locally, and am glad I did!

2011 Trapiche Malbec Broquel Mendoza

These were outstanding value upon release. Sadly, they have not held up well at all. Disjointed...off flavors...hardly recognizable as the wine it once was. I can't help but wonder if the DIAM cork had anything to do with it.
  • winedupe commented:

    11/4/22, 8:06 PM - Hello Thesternowl,
Was the cork actually labelled as "DIAM"? There are a large number of "agglomerated" corks out there, and I doubt that Broquel used authentic DIAM corks in 2011. My understanding, having red extensively on the topic is that all DIAM corks are labeled as such. Please pipe in on this.
My curiosity comes from having just opened a old 2011 Broquel Malbec, which was surprisingly good. Unfortunately, I did not pay attention to, or save, the cork.
    Thanks - Winedupe

Such an extraordinary wine. Among all of the many Cali cult cabs my friends have shared with me this year, none had the depth and beauty of this wine at age 19, and probably none of them will develop it in time. Dunn Howell and Ridge MB are my two favorite American reds, and they have yet to let me down, including plenty of Dunns from the 1980s bought second- (or third?) hand, as this case was. I see the CT drinking window starts in 2024. No doubt it will be great then and for a few decades thereafter. But I'll give it a 98 right now. Fantastic mix of primary and secondary flavors, all in harmony, with length and beauty. A great wine that is absolutely ready to rock your world.

My web page says "Drink 2013-2031". Where did you get 2024?

Quite light color; strong aromas of cotton candy, buttered popcorn, greeness, alcohol; pungent flavors of lemon, apple, metal and plenty of heat. The strong acidity keeps this balanced. Full throttled CA chardonnay but no simple butter bomb. This should please the whole range of wine drinkers: on one end you've got your great aunt Ida and on the other is Dieter the bespectacled odd wine snob from the IT dept. Aunt Ida, "This is really good honey, could you get me a couple of ice cubes?" Dieter, "Das Californians fall very short of a 2007 1er Cru Puligny-Montrachet Les Caillert but I vill still drink this."

12/2/17, 5:35 PM - Racer, ROTFL! I have been working through a case of the 2013, and have tried one bottle of the 2016, which seems similar (restrained, but good). Have you tried the 2016? Given your spot on analysis of the 2013, I would value your take on the 2016. Thanks - Winedupe

My sister really enjoyed but I'm not a fan.

Dark purple color. Bell pepper (pyrazines), black cherry on nose. Blackberry, black cherry fruit primary palate with some herbal undertones - Medium+ body, medium- acidity and medium finish. I had a hard time getting over the nose on this wine. Would not purchase. 87+ for my palate.

2/7/17, 8:47 PM - CWILLIAM, Bell pepper compound is a pyrazine, not pyrizine. Ironically, I smell it often in red wines from Chile, for example Santa Rita Carmenere 120 and Cabernet. I am curious as to why grapes are expressing a pepper compound. The two plants probably diverged hundreds of millions of years ago... For me this is a serious defect in a wine. I like bell peppers in my salad, and chili peppers in my chile, but not in my wine.. -Winedupe

Pray tell where you bought this for $11. My local discount wine shop (Woburn, MA) sells it for $17. I would love to get it for $11. Thanks
