Parfumed nose of violets, cherries, raspberry, spice, forest floor and dried mushrooms. Velvety and light-bodied with sour and fresh red berry fruit. Light, cherry stone bitterness, and sleek tannins. Long, balanced finish with spicy and earthy notes. Great value Burgundy, in a nice place right now.

Lovely Syrah from Pax Mahle - Mr. Wind Gap, and the guy on relentless search for cool climate Cali plots. This one called “the bench”, from a vineyard cooled down by the Golden Gate wind gap. 100% whole cluster fermentation and aged in 500L French oak puncheons for six months.
Robust and fresh aroma expression of cranberry juice, blue plums, violets, nutmeg, pepper and dried meat. Juicy and fresh on the palate, with rich and ripe red fruits, warm spice notes, some black fruit and liquorice. Savoury meaty flavors in the mid-palate. Medium body, vibrant acidity, and light but firm tannins. Medium long finish, ending in spicy warm red fruits. Very enjoyable.

My god. Mature GG riesling. Schatzel and Pettenthal just raises all my neck hairs - here in the 2011 vintage. Perfectly poised minerality and petro touch. Rich aromas of apricot, nectarine, ripe lemon, saffron, and still a floral whiff. Lovely concentration of fruit, with a nectar-like feel and tingling acidity. Rich, but delicate. Detailed and long, ending on a mineral and sour-fruity note. Beautiful.

rich aromas of red apple, raspberry, nectarine, grapefruit, toast and hazelnut. Delicate texture with elegant bubbles, fresh acidity, ripe yellow stonefruit, apple and citrus. Fruit-driven, with delicate minerality. Brioche and spice notes in a long finish. Excellent Christmas champagne - both with our traditional Christmas courses and chips ;)

Playful Friday with Rajat Parr wine Club Anika Mourvèdre. Turbid ruby. Cranberry, blue plum, blackberry, blue forest flowers, peppery notes and some liquorice. Fresh red berries initially, and a more plum-like fullness with delicate spice on the mid palate. Subtle tannins. Juicy, but not funky. Cool wine.

Diebolt-Vallois Fleur de Passion 2006 is exquisitely elegant. Brioche, cool and lean fruit in the form of green epple, slightly sweet lemon and cool, lean yellow stonefruit. The slightest touch of nuts, and well-integrated mineral notes. Light as a feather and velvety on the palate. Beautifully balanced and elegant. Complex in a light and etheral manner. Long. An absolute delight, and lucky to have some 2008 lying around as well

Made of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, from three of the top vineyards in the appellation (Sanford & Benedict, Rinconada, and Bentrock) - inspired by Selosse. 4 years on the lees.
Delicate aromas of toast, hazelnut, peach, ripe citrus, redcurrant and a slight herbal note. Fruit-driven palate, with balanced acidity and small, elegant bubbles. Medium complexity and length, with a slight bitter note in the finish. Very pleasant wine, and my only regret is having only one.

Red blend with a classic Piedmont feel to it. Rose petal, anise, rosehip, mushroom, cherries and morel on the nose. Medium bodied, with fresh acidity and firm but pleasant tannin structure. Slightly rustic, bit with finesse.

Keller’s Limestone riesling is just a ridiculously good kabinett. Timid nose, with lemon, green apple and minerals. The magic happens when this lean, fresh, delicate and mineral wine hits the tongue. Pure and cool lemon, fresh mountain spring water, touch of tart green apple. Zingy acidity and racy minerality. Some sweetness to make it a perfect partner for sushi or other asian dishes - or just as the best grown-up candy you can imagine.

Russel Joyce to the rescue with a charming take on Gamay. Mild smoke and toffee over sweet-sour red cranberries, redcurrant and raspberry. Hint of blue flowers. Fresh and slightly sour red berries on the palate. Touch of pepper. Light-bodied, with pure fruit and mild tannins. Mild spice and herbs in the finish. Likeable.

Lovely Chenin richness and finesse in this butterfly. Baumards Papillon in the 2011 vintage bursts of spicy yellow fruits like nectarine, apricot, apple and grapefruit. Telltale aromas of lanolin, honey, beezwax, honey, safforon and hints of flint. Rich and spicy yellow stonefruit, strong minerality and balanced acidity on the palate. Complex and powerful, with a long, balanced, mineral driven finish. Elegant power-Chenin, this one.

Corison makes some of the more elegant and restrained Napa Cabs. This one has aromas of violet, currant, blueberry, cedar, mint, liquorice, mild cocoa and a dusty whiff. Quite tight and acid-dominated at first, with light, dry powdery tannins. Opens nicely with some hours out in the free air: more integrated and balanced. Delicate and nuanced, fresh acidity, floral and elegant. Long. Not many manages to pull of such elegance in Napa, which is why Corison is one of my definite favourites.

Gotta love this muscular but elegant riesling. Aromas of ripe, rich citrus, nectarine, pineapple, flint and a slight petro note. Lean at low temperatures, but builds body with a couple of degrees more. Juicy and ripe yellow stone fruit and citrus on the palate. Fresh acidity nicely balances the rich fruit and wet stoney mineral structure. Good complexity. Big, but not bold - and lovely balanced. Long fruit- and mineral-driven finish.

Rajat’s take on Palomino: buttered popcorn, salted almonds, green olive, ripe lemon, rich nectarine and grapefruit zest. Full, yellow-fruity and saltish mouthfeel. On the modest acidity side, but nicely structured by dry elements and saltyness. Long, mineral-driven finish. Just an exciting wine from Rajat Parr’s wine Club. I want more.

One of my favourite Canadian producers, Lock & Worth, regrettably stopped making this beautiful Cabernet Franc. A lovely balanced wine with aromas of cranberry, raspberry and blackberry, baked red pepper, slight baking spice and smoke note, and a touch of forest floor. Ripe and rich, with fresh acidity, ripe and sleek tannins. Slight cherry-stone bitterness in a fresh and gently sour finish. I want more.

Jadot Fourchaume 2013 offers sunripe and rich lemons, green apple, chalk, wet gravel and mushroom notes. Good concentration. Balanced. In a nice place between youthfulness and age. Nice match to some fruits of the sea, and good company in a long, bright evening.

Francois Chidaine is a Chenin wizard. Even when showing Chenin from it’s rich and generous side, it is always with a becoming restraint and elegance. Les Choisilles 2017 has rich yellow stone fruits and apples, ripe citrus, lanolin, acacia honey, wax and chalk on the nose. Rich yellow juiciness and a medium to full body is elegantly tamed by fresh acidity, chalky minerality and some dry phenolic notes. Beautiful balance. The intriguing chenin paradox par excellence in one bottle.

Vrede Pinot Noir from Hannes Storm is in my mind his best cuvée. Hannes is situated in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in South Africa, and is not to be confused with his brother Ernest Storm whom by the way also makes excellent wines on the other side of the Atlantic, in Santa Barbara.
The Vrede PN 2018 is an elegant and welcoming wine. Lovely parfyme of warm strawberry, cherries, violets, cinnamon, chocolate and liquorice root. Sweet and sour rich red fruit on the tongue. Medium bodied with balanced fresh acidity, warm spice and mild cocoa notes. Discrete and lightly firm tannins. Playful acidity. Lovely balance. Crowd pleaser with layers, this one.

This basic Saumur rouge proves why Guiberteau is a buy-on-sight producer to me: an elegantly balanced and perfectly ripe Cab Franc. Aromas of blackberry, red cherries, roasted red pepper, wet gravel and hint of violet. Savoury but fresh, with lovely balance and purity of fruit. Well-integrated and slightly drying tannins. Mid-long peppery and mineral-driven finish with slight touch of cherry stone dryness. Smashing value, and good introduction to a great producer (don’t get me started on the whites).

Eben Sadie’s Soldaat 2016 is just a fabulously balanced grenache. Ripe strawberries accompanied by more subtle blackberry, sweet liquorice, black tea, cumin and the slight overnote of blue flowers. Impressing balance, with surprisingly fresh acidity, pure and precise fruit, well-integrated tannins, and medium mouthweight. Long finish, driven by sour red fruits, subtle earthyness and hint of spice. Lovely bottle.

Huber-Verdereau is still unexplicably underrated, providing elegant and balanced wines with great potential. Their Monthélie «La Combe Danay» is distinctly floral, with subtle violet and lilac aromas. Lean raspberry and morel, subtle earthyness, champignon and touch of herbs. Fresh acidity, sleek tannins. Lovely balance and medium length. Still one of the better value Burgundy buys in NO in my mind - both the bottle and the producer.

Alex Foillard, son of natural wine icon and gang of four member Jean Foillard, has some ambition of his own as well. In 2015 he bought some vineyards of his own in Brouilly - formerly unknown to the family. His Brouilly comes from 5 year old vines in the plot “La Folie” (a pretty steep one to work in). The wine has delicate aromas of violet, red cherry, strawberry, mid herbs and wet gravel. Lovely balanced wine with nice purity of fruit. Medium fruit- and mineral-dominated body, fresh acidity, subtle tannins. Delicate and smooth mid-long finish, with a herbal and mineral touch. Falling apples and trees etc..

The Fontalloro 2011 is in a nice place right now: primary aromas of cherries, blackberry, anise and sage, but also more developed traits of leather, earthy notes, cedar and sweet tobacco. Fleshy and ripe fruit, medium body, and a lovely terracotta-like rusticity to the palate. Ripe, well-integrated and nicely balanced tannins. Fruit, anise, earth and chocolatey finish with good length. In the spot where I like them - between playful youth and developed maturity.

Van Loggerenberg Trust Your Gut 2018 strikes a lovely balance between generousity and constrained elegance. Nectarine, apricot, honey, beezwax, floral notes, black tea, sapphron and cinnamon notes. Seems like a lot, non? However; the juicy and rich fruit is tightend up by fresh acidity, elegant minerality and some orange peel bitterness - keeping the wine balanced and exciting. Long, mineral- and spice-driven finish. Lovely now, but will hold up for at least 10 more years.

A «simple» Langhe Nebbiolo, really showcasing the La Morra elegance. Burzi had become a favourite amongst the young Piedmont winemakers. The Runcaja has subtle aromas of rose petal, anise, sour red cherries, rosehip and sage. Fresh acidity, and slightly spicy red fruit on the tongue - anise and cherry stone bitter notes. Medium body, elegant dry tannins. Balanced finish. Easy drinking, but serious. Love this one.

Nice way to kick off 2022: Domaine de la côte Pure 2019 is litterally smokin’. Expressive on the nose, with smokey notes over red and dark cherries, sour raspberry, morel, liquorice root and wet mould. Bright palate, with fresh and vibrant red fruits, earthy notes, hints of liquorice and milk chocolate - with a whiff of violets. Medium bodied with subtle tannins. Playful but serious - just the way I’d like my 2022 to be.

A bit tight straight out of the bottle, but quickly opens up with air. Violet, syrine, red cherries, morel, some blackberry, cumin and hint of smoke. Tart red cherries and redcurrant floats over in darker cherries, liquorice and some mild herbs on the palate. Fresh acidity, medium body, and a long, balanced finish - ending on fresh red berry fruit and a hint of stone bitterness.

Burn cottage PN with a few years on it’s back. These are lovely fruit- and floral-driven in their youth. This kid has acquired gentle aromas of forest floor and mushroom over the continuously shining fresh red cherries, blackberries and cola. Mild cinnamon notes as well. Smooth, medium-bodied and fresh. Very gentle tannins. Tad bit short, but likeable. Nice balance, and in a good place now. Ending on a cherry stone and spice note. Would not give this one much more time in the bottle. It can, but I definitely enjoy these with the lovely fruity and floral aromas still in play.

Golden straw. Baked yellow apple and citrus, chalky minerality and honey. Bone dry, medium body and racy acidity. Yellow fruit, honey and chalky minerals builds on the palate for a long curve - landing in seashells and faint apple notes. I definitely drink my Chablis too young. Probably you too.

The Xisto Cru from Louis Seabra is born in blue slate - a field blend on rufete, touriga franca, malvasia preta, alicante bouschet and donzelinho tinto. Slightly restrained tart red fruits, savoury blackberries and blueberry. Earthy tones of wet gravel, a flinty whiff and liquorice root. Mild herbal touch. Fresh acidity and medium plus tannins. Concentrated and powerful, yet nicely balanced with freshness and floral/herbal elements. Long.

A somewhat rare pearl from Rajat Parr: Scythians Palomino is like the baby of sherry and a fruit-driven Chenin: interesting nose, with flint, almond, green olives, sunripe lemon, yellow apple and beeswax. Soft touch, with medium acidity and juicy apple-and-citrusy feel. Lemon zest with slight bitterness. Nice mineral nerve. Long finish, ending on almond, smokey and lemon peel notes. An interesting Californian twist, indeed. (By the way; The Scythians were a group of ancient tribes of nomadic warriors who originally lived in what is now southern Siberia. Now you know).

One of my definitive go-to summer wines is Lock & Worth Semillon. Such fresh, citrusy and vibrant fruit character, mixed with green tea, mild herbs, white flower and just a hint of white peach. Enamel-peeling acidity. Touch of almond bitterness. Light-footed, but serious. Lightly chilled on a summer day, this is pure bliss.

Lukas Van Loggerenberg’s Geronimo is still in my head one of the more elegant cinsaults produced in South Africa. Strawberries, cherry sauce, smoked bacon, cumin, nutmeg and a hint of black tea. Spicy and ripe fruit on the palate. Playful and fresh acidity. Slightly drying ripe tanninns. Cherry stone bitterness in a medium long finish. Keep coming back to this one.

The Les Bournais has a moderately expressive nose of baked yellow apples, nectarine, apricot, grapefruit, lavender and rich warm spicy notes. Bursts of rich and spicy yellow stone fruit on the palate. Fresh acidity and citrus peel bitterness combined with a wet gravel mineral feel makes a solid backbone. Complex an layered. Long, spice-driven finish. Lovely balance.

Monsieur Chidaine is amongst many known as the king of Montlouis, and makes a variety of cuvées from different plots and soils - always with an eloquent feel for the balance between racy acidity, minerality, and the more generous side of Chenin blanc. Les Tuffeaux has an understated richness to it, with aromas of white peach, apricot, baked apple, honeysuckle, chamomile, and a chalky mineral touch. Just a slight sweetness on the tongue. Pure and ripe orange, baked apple, tangerine, and sweet lemons in the back. Tightens up with fresh, steely acidity, and an ever-present nerve of chalk and graphite. Great concentration. Long finish, ending on a touch of orange peel bitterness.

Cool and fresh red berries with lovely purity of fruit, juicy and light mouthfeel, lip-smacking acidity, and a medum long finish ending on notes of mild spice, fennel and cherry stone. Elegant and playful wine from the terraces in Domodossola, and yet another gem from @oneonthehill

Little William also stopped by this summer. He smelt somewhat floral at first, before revealing blackberries, red cherry sauce, cumin, liquorice, anise and black pepper. Domaine de la côte pure 2016 is an interesting animal. Initiates with a bit overload of cola and spices, but this settles with some air. Then pure berry fruit emerges: dark cherry, raspberries and cranberry sauce - still with mild baking spice notes, some cola and a subtle herbal touch. Medium-bodied with ripe and sleek tannins. Prickling acidity. Slight stone bitterness and mild spices in the finish. Not quite Bloom’s Field, but still very enjoyable.

On why you should drink more Loire Chenin: chalk and flint on the opening, quickly thereafter revealing wax, concentrated pure citrus, yellow apple, nuts, some vanilla and fennel. Pure grapefruit, lemon, yellow and green apple - with richness nicely constrained by the distinct Chenin acidity, mineral notes and a slight peel bitterness. Lovely balanced and long finish, weighted towards minerals, acidity and a whiff of smoke. Coche-ish reductivity. Dig this one.

Drink Chenin Day, and what better than to celebrate it with one of the best producers of this great grape? Guiberteau Les Moulins elegantly combines tart and structured elements with the more generous and rich side of Chenin. This one has aromas of beezwax, honey, tart yellow and green apples, grapefruit, chamomil and white flowers. Structured palate, with tart acidity but rich and pure yellow stonefruits, citrus and hints of spice. Nice note of peel bitterness. Lovely balance, and a long finish with tingling acidity and minerality.

Whilst in the saumur-zone.. Not only the whites of Guiberteau are worth mentioning. This entry-level Cab Franc is just a delight.
