2015 Château Capbern St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
8/29/2021 - J. Jedema Likes this wine:
89 points
Very deep dark crimson colour in the glass with thick legs. Significant sediment in the bottle requires decanting or careful pouring. Medium to good concentration of mainly black fruits (blackberries, blueberries). Full bodied, with tannins a bit softened but still present and medium finish. This is a good Bordeaux, but still a bit closed. The second day it was even nicer which makes me think it will have the ability to evolve even a bit further. 89p for now.

Inky dark red. Sediment in the bottle, careful pouring. Oak spices, earth and cassis nose. Medium bodied, black currant, blackberries, soft polished tannins and a long finish. 2010 is known as a good vintage, and this wine definitely lives up to the expectation. Good QPR!

Dark garnet red colour. Some sediment in the bottle. Nose with ripe black and blueberries. Intense fruit flavours of largely black fruits with some complexity of cedar and spices. Velvety tannins very polished with balanced acidity and medium to long finish. Its really a joy to drink this already, and has a good future ahead. I am really happy I bought a full case of this.

The first bottle from a case of six. The cork pulled a bit too easy. The nose is great with warm black and red fruits and nice complex aromas. However at first sip it tastes exteremely acidic. I think I’ve never tasted this much acidity before. I’m not sure if it’s vinegar, but certainly too much for me to handle. I flushed the entire bottle. Hopefully it’s an off bottle and the remaining ones are better. Will try another one soon.

This blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is drinking perfectly now. On the nose blackberries, cherries and plum with some herbaceous notes. It’s very fruity and great companion of a nice steak.

Barnyard forest floor smells. Interesting. Totally different than I've tasted before. With pizza very pleasant. Nice fruit and a bit sweet. Full concentration.

Deep dark red color. Expressive on the nose with blackberry, strawberry and spices like clove, cinnamon and a little tobacco, coffee and chocolate. On the palate full bodied with medium acidity. Lot of fruit concentration and nice balance with an almost sweet fruity taste. Tannins very soft and velvety. The finish is long.

Ruby red in the glass. Somewhat closed on the nose. Not the typical Rioja association. On the palate it lacks the fruit, and is highly acidic. It lacks balance and the finish is sour. I’ve had better vintages of this wine before.

Nice dark ruby colour. Still quite young and benefits from some air. Strong concentration of dark red fruits with prunes, cherries, cassis and strawberry jam. Aromas of oak ageing, little vanilla. High acidity, soft tannins and medium finish. This is a very good value Bordeaux.

I read some disappointing reviews for older other vintages of this wine. But my personal experience is much more positive. I don’t drink Chardonnay that much, but this one I could clearly appreciate.

Light yellow almost golden color in the glass. Aromas of citrus, lime and green apples with a wooded toasty undertone. It has medium acidity, with a soft oily almost buttery texture. The finish is flavourful and very long lasting. Overall a very balanced wine that could even evolve with time. I’ll definitely buy some more of this.

Dark ruby red colour. Initially a bit hot but this disappears with some breathing in the glass. Afterwards expressive on the nose, with dark fruits, blackberries, blueberries, black plums, but also strawberries and spices like almond and cinnamon. On the palate it has medium acidity, juicy texture, very concentrated fruits and soft tannins. Finish is long and spicy. Given its concentration and balance I expect this wine will have many years ahead. But for now, this is already a real joy to drink.

I’ve had this little more than a year ago and was not very impressed. This time it was better and much more expressive. It has a dark yellow colour with a brownish rim. On the nose it has citrus, mandarin and spices marzipan. On the palate light to medium bodied with medium+ acidity with notes of pear, peach and apple. The texture is a bit thick almost buttery. It has developed nice complexity with a very long nutty finish with hazelnuts and almond.

Quite sharp and acidic. Not at the same level I have tasted before from the 2012 vintage. Blindly tasted I would not recognise it as a Rioja.

Medium ruby colour. On the nose cassis, plum, and hints of pepper and rhubarb. Expressive notes of oak and spices like cinnamon and almond. On the palate relatively light medium bodied with medium plus acidity and very soft sweet tannins. The finish is spicy and long. This is well balanced and easy to drink with a good meal or on its own. I would say this is at its peak now, but will be good for some years ahead as well.

Deep dark almost black colour, little sediment in the bottle. On the nose very dense black fruits with black currant, cassis, plum and oak. The palate is full of fruitiness smooth, tobacco, vanilla and chocolate with medium acidity. The fruit perfectly balances the fine and supple tannins. It finishes very long. It was great already immediately after opening and the second day softened out. This wine is drinking beautifully now and has a good future ahead.

Dark ruby red colour. First day a bit closed on the nose. Classical Bordeaux with still some rough edges from the oak tannins and alcohol. Given the price you might not expect that much, but over the 2nd and 3rd day it transformed into a softer more pleasant drinking wine. In my view this has good potential and just requires some more rest in the cellar. Try again in two years.

Drinking this on the 3rd day is much better than the 1st. This suggests that a proper decant is required or just wait a few more years and it will much likely improve. On the nose it’s beautiful perfumed with cherries, anise, cinnamon and leather. On the palate nicely balanced with barely recognisable tannins, and nice acidity. Long finish. Definitely a good wine, and I think I drank it too early. Still very good nonetheless.

Very dark colour. On the nose a very nice aroma of blackberries, black currant, prunes and nutmeg with oak influences. On the palate strong presence of astringent tannins. With some air it becomes much softer and rounder. Medium concentration of fruits with blackberries, blueberries and raisins. Medium finish. I think this will benefit from a few more years in the cellar.

Light transparent garnet colour with brownish rim. Drank for dinner without decanting. Classical barbaresco nebbiolo perfumes with roses and tar. On the palate medium to high acidity and very fine soft tannins, not astringent at all. This was balanced with red fruits like red cherries and cranberries, with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, cedar and leather. The finish is nice and long. On the second day the wine was still in good shape. I like this very much, and I think it has definitely entered its optimal drinking window now, and will be good for several years ahead.

Deep dark red colour. Full concentration of fruits. Nose somewhat closed. Dark forest berry fruits with several spices, amongst others some clove. I think I drank it too quickly and next time I need to apply some more serious decanting. But overall a very good wine, which has many good years ahead.

Garnet colour, with some sediment in the bottle. On the nose red fruits with tones of cedar and spices. On the palate medium bodied, soft texture and very smooth tannins, drinking beautifully. On the finish the fruit fades away and becomes a little thin. Probably a bit past it’s peak, but still very enjoyable.

Classic regular Bordeaux. Evolved quite nicely. Nice perfumes on the nose of blue fruits, cassis and cedar. Clear influences of the oak ageing. On the palate it lacks a bit the concentration but acidity is good and tannins are very smooth. It’s drinking very pleasantly now. Not overly complex but very nice and exact what a classic Bordeaux should be.

Deep golden colour, looks magnificent in the glass. On the nose perfumes of peach, apricot, honey, hazelnuts and flowers. On the palate a bit oily buttery texture, very soft and pleasant. The finish is medium. I have the feeling this is a bit more closed than the 2015 I had last year, but it’s still great quality for the price. It won’t hurt to leave this in the cellar a bit longer.
