Double-decanted for about 5 hours before drinking with sirloin and rib-eye. Sweet black fruit, menthol, mint and pencil shavings on the nose. Fresh and juicy on the palate with blackberry and black cherry flavours, and a touch of cedar. Tannins are fine. Medium finish. This is a nicely balanced wine, albeit still quite primary.

This was our first bottle from a 12-pack and I would say this wine is open for business. However, I won't rush to try the next bottle as I think it has a lot of time in front of it and that its development will be relatively pedestrian.

Cherry menthol, mint and spice on the nose. Lovely fruity palate with a touch of spice. Incredibly smooth texture followed by some serious puckering from the tannins. Great balance with a medium finish. This was our first bottle from a six pack and we were unsure if it would be too early to try but it wasn't. It will certainly develop over the next decade but is fantastic drinking now. Drunk with spaghetti Bolognese on day one and lasagne on day two.

Made from 90 % Grenache Noir and 10 % Grenache Gris grown on schist soils. The solera at Domaine Pages was started in 1921 and continued until 1962 when it was forgotten about until Pierre Gaillard bought the estate and discovered this wine which makes for quite a find.

As others have noted this is a fantastic wine. We drunk it over many weeks, a little at a time. Dried fruit aromas, nut and chocolate on the palate. Very long finish, absolutely delicious. A great alternative to a port or sherry and excellent value for money.

Initially very primary on both the nose and palate with lots of dark and fresh fruit to the fore. On the palate there is juicy black fruit and a touch of black olive and spice. There is searing acidity that really makes you're mouth water. Tannins make themselves known but are unobstrusive. This has plenty of life ahead of it and is probably worth leaving alone for a couple of years at which point I might expect it to score higher.

2007 Spinifex Shiraz - Viognier Barossa Valley Shiraz Blend, Syrah (view label images)
1/12/2020 - mtarrant003 Likes this wine:

Clear and bright in appearance with no signs of ageing. Fruity on the nose with that extra lift from the 6% viognier in the blend. Smooth and supple on the palate with lots of dark fruits, cedar, vanilla and tobacco. The wine is fresh with good acidity and the tannins are mellow. The wine has a medium finish. I would expect this to develop more secondary and tertiary character over the next five years or so. Decanted an hour prior to lunch and drunk with roast lamb.

A blend of 55% syrah, 35% grenache and 10% mourvedre grown on brown schist. The syrah and mourvedre spent 14 months in barrels (25% new) and the grenache was aged in vats.

Very fruit driven at this early stage with the mourvedre making itself known. Fairly tannic with good acidity, full body and a medium finish. We drank this with fried up spagbol leftovers and they went very well together.

A lovely wine from this Pierre Galliard estate in SW France and excellent QPR.

Dark, dense purple colour that is fresh in appearance. Brooding on the nose with black fruits to the fore, in particular blackberry. Dark fruits on the palate, good acidity, medium tannins. There is good weight to this wine without it being heavy or overpowering. I would expect this wine to hold up well for a number of years yet.

A lovely Mouvedre driven wine that was enjoyed by all after a two hour decant. I also found this to be a great contrast to the Cuvee Imperiale CNDP made by the same producer which is 100% old vine grenache.

The colour is still very fresh with no signs of bricking. On opening the nose immediately hits you with characteristic graphite, cassis and tobacco. On the palate this is classic Pauillac at its best with blackcurrant, plum and leather coming to the fore. The tannins are smooth, there is good acidity and the finish is medium but lingers. Decanted for two hours and drunk over the next four hours both by itself and with roast beef. This is an excellent wine that is just getting into its stride and will offer lots more in the years to come.

I would have to agree that this is a unique wine, I've never had anything like it before. Our group was split with two really enjoying it and two not. On the nose there is honey, bitumen and lanolin and with swirling some stone fruit. On the palate there is a streak of citrus followed by more waxy and honeyed flavours. There is great weight to this wine, akin to a Rhone white, with a certain viscosity and a lovely texture in the mouth. I would expect this wine to have a relatively long life ahead of it. Drunk over six hours with no decant.

Confected fruit, cherries and a touch of menthol on the nose. Rich red cherry, black cherry and a really suave and silky creamy texture on the palate. There is quite a bit of weight to the palate and a real sense of body to this wine. Medium finish that lingers for a good 30 seconds. At 14.3% the alcohol did not stand out or in any way detract. This is a fantastic wine that offers great complexity and IMO is best drunk by itself. Drunk over 2-3 hours after a one hour decant.

We drank this with roast chicken dinner with no decant ahead of time. As others have noted, this is lighter in colour than other Barossa Valley wines, but with nearly 50% Grenache in the blend that is what I would expect, more akin to a CNDP. What struck me with this wine is the more prominent acidity that grabs your attention on the palate, but the sweet fruits and spice are still there too. This was delicious, went really well with the meal and I would expect it to drink well for another five years.

This is developing nicely both on the nose and the palate. The constituent wines, particularly those declassified from the domaine's premier cru holdings, really shine through, as does the quality of the vintage. I don't think this is for long term keeping but I suspect it will drink nicely over the next 5 years or so.

What a wine! Some bricking on the rim. Great complexity on the nose, cherry and violets to the fore. Fresh with good acidity, fruity and tannic on the palate. The alcohol is quite high at 14.5% but did not detract. This was not an expensive wine but is a great example of how good the 2006 vintage is. This has plenty of life left in it and will continue to develop favourably in my view.

Very enjoyable mature Barsac that was delicious with lemon tart and cream. This is the second bottle from a 6-bottle case and we are 'two for two' with corks that disintegrated on opening and were a real pain to remove, not something I would expect from a wine of this age. The merchant assures me storage was good so I wonder if the chateau had a bunch of duff corks as I've seen at least one other tasting note where the same issue was noted.

Two hour decant before consuming with roast chicken dinner. Cedar, spice and dark fruits on the nose. Quite sweet on the palate but the cedar and spice prevents it from being too much. Loads of acidity keeps things fresh and the alcohol does not overpower. Medium finish. This has the first signs of aging on the rim so it will be interesting to see if the sweetness mellows in time. I would expect it to be in good form for at least the next five years.

We have enjoyed this as both an aperitif and an after dinner drink, both in the summer and on cooler autumn days. Fruity on the nose and smooth on the palate with medium length. While fortified the alcohol is not that noticeable or overpowering. A great find and one we will no doubt revisit.

Slight orange hue on the rim. With a little time and coaxing, aromas of cherries, orange and cinnamon come to the fore. On the palate this is very juicy, nicely fruity and incredibly tannic, but the tannins are not harsh. Medium finish.

This is a delicious wine that is going to continue to improve for the next 10-15 years.

One hour decant before drinking with roast chicken dinner.

Loads of primary fruit on both the nose and palate with blackcurrant being the dominant fruit. Incredibly tannic but not astringent, although I suspect it might be tough going by itself.

This was enjoyed by all, has plenty of life ahead of it and has a great QPR.

Decanted two hours before lunch and drunk with lamb cooked on the BBQ. Red fruits and spice on the nose with a little smoke developing with time in the glass. Lovely and smooth on the palate with good levels of fruit remaining and that touch of syrah spice. Medium finish. A really excellent wine that I would suggest will develop for at least another five years but is very drinkable right now.

Grenache blend with 70% Grenache Gris. Honey, apricots, white peach, jasmine, marzipan on the nose. Luscious and fat in the mouth somewhat like a Roussanne but with more noticeable and refreshing acidity. Short-medium finish. A delicious wine for summer drinking but would also pair well with poultry.

Decanted an hour before lunch and consumed with roast chicken dinner. Noticeable bricking on the rim indicating some age but otherwise looking in fine form. Still plenty of fruit on the nose as well as the palate. Silky smooth on the palate with an initial hint of the alcohol present (14.5%) but this was not noticeable thereafter. Medium finish.

A lovely wine that is drinking well now and I would suggest will remain in fine form for a few years to come.

Served with our first BBQ of the year and paired nicely with the rump and sirloin steaks. Decanted about 90 minutes ahead of time which it certainly benefited from.

Lots of red and some black fruits on the nose. Plenty of acidity on the palate along with red fruits and a very smooth creamy texture which I think is the oak still showing itself to a certain extent.

A hugely drinkable wine that is delicious and ready to go but I suspect there is still quite a bit of secondary evolution to come as it wasn't showing too much of that today.

Red apple, citrus and honey blossom on the nose. Quite viscous and of course sweet on the palate but with lots of acidity that provides balance. Medium finish but it lingers with both fruit and a hint of something more secondary emerging. No doubt the sweet fruit will fade and the typical Riesling character will emerge in time but I suspect that is at least a decade away.

It's hard to believe that a wine with this much fruit, freshness and acidity is seventeen years old. This is my third bottle over the past year with very little variation indicating it will continue to evolve very slowly and I would imagine will develop favourably for at least another decade.

This is a real heavyweight of a wine with lots of fresh rather than cooked black fruit, earth, leather and spice. Tannins make their presence felt but are mellowing and not harsh. Full bodied with a medium finish.

Christmas pudding, Cornish clotted cream and a glass of Doisy Vedrines, I must be living the dream. I love this wine by itself and with hard cheeses but this pairing with the pudding and cream was something else.

The wine is gaining in complexity with some honeyed and marmalade notes. It has good weight and viscosity but also good acidity to balance so it not overly cloying or sweet. Excellent QPR.

We offered this the respect due and gave it five hours in the decanter ahead of Christmas dinner which was duly repaid.

Lots of black fruit and confected cherries on the nose from the get-go, with tobacco and spice emerging as time went on. Incredibly weighty on the palate but also very smooth with a medium finish. Somehow a little of this remained until Boxing Day and was still going strong with further emergence of spicy and earthy flavours. Good times.

This is clearly only just getting started and has a very long life ahead of it during which it will no doubt gain in complexity. My most recent point of comparison for this vintage was a bottle of Cos d'Estournel, just over the St Estephe-Pauillac border in close proximity to Pontet Canet and so for me is a helpful comparison. The Cos was also excellent but quite a bit more evolved than the PC and maybe a sign of things to come here.

Kicked off the Christmas Day action with smoked salmon, scrambled egg and a bottle of this rather excellent sparkling wine.

What really struck me this time was how much I could clearly taste the underlying Kit's Coty wine. Great freshness and acidity, flavours of green apple and citrus, but also elements of brioche. Medium body and finish.

A cracking wine that is entering its tertiary stages of life but I would expect to still be good and to further develop for at least another decade if in good condition.

Compared to the previous bottle I had there was lots of jammy and cooked fruit rather than the fresher fruit that came through last time. Plenty of cinnamon and spice too. All of which went well with roast lamb on a cold wintry day.

The alcohol is high but not noticeable or overpowering and there is also good acidity here providing some freshness and balance. I'm not sure how much this wine will further develop and improve but I would expect it to hold at the current level for a number of years. Great QPR.

Great balance of sweetness and acidity with plenty of weight yet not too viscous. Showing both citrus flavours and more spicy, honeyed, even marmalade flavours. I am continually impressed by the QPR from this chateau both for this vintage and across many others.

Drunk with steak and pork cooked on the BBQ after a 2 hour decant. This was surprisingly tight and not giving away anywhere near as much as I was hoping for but certainly was holding the promise of so much more to come. Beautiful purity of fruit and that lovely sense of austerity I find typical of Barolo. My gut reaction is that this needs another 10 years but we shall see how it progresses in the next couple of years.

Drunk with roast lamb after 4 hours in the decanter.

On initial opening a ton of black fruit hits you in the face followed by an almost confected aroma which was both interesting and pleasant. This then faded to give more traditional black fruits and some pencil shavings.

On the palate there was plenty of blackberry, good integration of the oak and an incredible smoothness to this wine. The tannins are fine and there is great balance in this wine. This is a gorgeous wine that is really only just starting out and I look forward to more of it in the future.
