Overrated in a big way. Save the money. I had an $18 Chablis last week which was more enjoyable.

1/28/18, 2:57 PM - I was seriously disappointed and I wasn't trying to be cheeky or embellish the truth about the $18 Chablis being better. It was much better. I have a hard time imagining anyone would find this wine to be a good value.

1971 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Nebbiolo
I think there are several reasons for the mixed reviews on this wine. Bottle variation and storage can play a big role but personal preference is probably the major factor.

I popped and poured a small sip. The rest went into the decanter. For the first two hours, this was far too tight and acidic. Nothing like you would encounter with an old Bordeaux. Direct opposites, in fact. I'm very familiar with Nebbiolo so I expected this.

I tried it over the course of five hours, with food at one point, and it just wasn't approachable. Not enjoyable. Left it sit overnight. Next day, it had mellowed substantially and was okay. Paired it with some pasta and the food cut what was left of the acidity.

If you don't own it, I don't recommend purchasing. It is definitely not worth the money. If you do own it, I recommend drinking now but let it sit in a decanter for a day before you touch it and pair it with food. It does have a bit of that sherry feel to it but it's not exactly like sherry. Some people enjoy that taste and some do not so I think that explains the wide range in the ratings.

I bought this because I had read some reviews which called this the best Liberal ever. I was underwhelmed. Decanted for an hour+. Still a little acidic. Left for another hour. Opened up and became much better but it lacked any sense of complexity. It's an ok Bordeaux but there are better values out there.

5/1/15, 12:24 PM - Good point. I haven't had all the major years but I've had several vintages and I can't say that any were that striking. I guess all the hoopla about 2000 had me hoping for more but I agree that the verdict is still out on that year.

Ugh. Do not bother. If you own it, try to sell it. Even if it's for half of what you paid. Take the money and buy something you know you like. I've had several second labels (Echo from Lynch Bages comes to mind) and they never come anywhere close to the first labels. 2004 isn't considered a spectacular vintage but I've had '04 California wines which were far superior for a third of the price.

12/13/14, 2:05 PM - Everyone certainly has their own tastes. That's the beauty of drinking wine. And I certainly didn't mean it tastes like a low-end bar wine but it falls dramatically short of the first label and for the price, there are so many better options. Talbot, Beychevelle, Gruaud Larose, etc. All are more worthy imho.
