After trying 2010 and loving it, now coming back with a fresher, but just as fine vintage. Made from biodynamically farmed vines planted at 1900, no sulphur added, aged for 8 months in used oak, not filtered. Medium+ intensity aroma of damp earth, barnyard, fruity and fragrant notes cherries, raspberries, red currants, rose petal hints, touch of kvass. Medium body, fruity and fresh with lively and crunchy structure, juicy herbal and vegetal tinged fruity flavours, green fine sandy tannins, medium+ acidity.

The nose is typically Beaujolais with a hint crushed strawberries. The mouth is smooth and balanced with a nice precision. I’m wondering how this will evolve.

Interesting and buy-worthy Chablis with strong QPR. Shows a little hay and almond butter on the nose, with some not-quite-oyster, maybe clam-shell minerals, with lemon curd. I like the 19 better but this does have the stuffing.

8/3/22, 8:27 AM - In what way was the 2019 better? More powerful or sweeter?

  • Fre commented:

8/3/22, 1:29 PM - Thanks a lot for your reply. I had the feeling that in most Chablis, the 2020 is more a classical vintage than 2019 with more acidity. Where the 2019 can have more exotic fruit flavours. That’s why I had this question when I read your comment. I will open a bottle soon and post my impressions. Gr Frederik

2017 Domaine Jean Chartron Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Pucelle Chardonnay

This started out a little funky and stubborn in the early going, with a completely muted nose and lifeless linear execution of “flavor:” lemon juice acidity and perhaps a little chalk on the palate, but otherwise fairly insipid for the first hour. Final sips were the best here, with some green apple, yellow pear, and lime notes peeking out around the yellow citrus core.

It got better, but it never got that interesting. It seems to carry a true sophistication, purity, and class that showcase focus and academic acumen (which will obviously be appealing to those seeking out these wines), but it doesn’t deliver wholly in the complexity and depth departments at this juncture.

Will time help? Perhaps, but I don’t suspect this will ever be a showstopper kind of P-M. Chartron’s style can often be higher register and more agile indeed. Traditional, classic, refined, and all the mildly standard attributes one could deem as positive in this wine can also come off as anemic, lackluster, and average...depending on how forgiving and altruistic you feel on any given day.

I was more benevolent with my last valuation of my previous bottle of this a couple of years ago, in hopes it would show signs of a pulse after some short term cellaring. Not so much (Yet? Still? Perchance?... Who knows). In any case, just know what you’re getting into here. If you enjoy playing Cribbage with your 95-year-old grandma in her assisted living facility in Plano Texas, then you will love the Chartron Pucelle.

3/24/22, 1:55 PM - Thank for the review. I would expect a Pucelle 2017 in a closed phase. Your TN confirms this. If you have more bottles, try to keep another 5 years (or more). A top notch 1er cru PM should be given 10-15 years to fully show its potential. Of course, premox de always lurks behind the corner. That’s the trade off you need to make.

Classic Viognier. Pronounced apricot, peach and gingerbread spice. Long finish. Great wine to pair with chicken, pork or fish.

Bright, breezy an refreshing. Gooseberry, elderflower and some dusty licorice-like ('salmiak') minerality. Medium-bodied, soft fruit-like acidity.
A slamming value with its under 10€ pricetag!

Quel beau vin! 93-94 pts

My last bottle was corked. This was beautiful in a 2005 way. The fruit is very present but remains retrained by the tannin profile of the vintage. Lots of cassis in the nose with a boysenberry lift to it, quite appealing. The Flavours are round and confident. Engaging.

What a balance, what a joy. Prefer this above a village Côte de Nuits from a mediocre winemaker. It’s not it’s complexity or length what you’re need to look for. But finesse, balance and the harmony.

what went wrong here ? fruit is practically not present and a very aggressive burnt tire smell welcomes you on the nose and continues in the mouth. Either keep this 15 years hoping the pirelli tire goes away or don't bother...highly rated by wine critics....go figure!

11/26/19, 11:09 PM - 2015 is now in a closed phase. Given the caracteristics of the vintage, it will probably stay there for some while. Hold for another 10-15y, I would say

Nicely crafted. Deep black cherry fruit mixed with Liam and earth notes. Palate is quite freshness, with a tart edge but otherwise accessible now. Chalky finish. Needs some time to develop aromatics.

Opens with a big blast of pencil shavings from the oak, but it backs off with some airtime. What it doesn't do is offer a very much fruit - it feels hollow in the middle and austere around the edges, with tarry/gravelly flavors more prominent than the fruit and a boxy, austere structure. Some plumminess comes out the next day to flesh it out and smooth it out a bit, though the wood inflections surface again too. Not up to its usual standard this vintage.
  • Fre commented:

6/9/19, 11:13 AM - Thanks Keith. I'm surprised by your TN. Got 91-94 from Meadows & Netl Martin (92-94). Maybe the wine comes into a closed phase? The Morey vieilles vignes 2016 last year was great. I'd give it at another 5 - 10 years in the cellar to develop.

Pnp, drank over 2 hours. Some minimal fruit, some earth, flat. Needs more time, or past its prime, or just this is it?
  • Fre commented:

8/8/18, 12:56 AM - I have had a similar experience. But drunk this boy also in his youth when visiting the winery. I can't image that all the good elements just dissappeared. I've tasted a 2004, not immediately a stunner vintage, in 2014 and he put a lot more expensive bottles that were served that evening, in his shade. Hold another 3-5 years I would recommend
