a bit young still, but ever so delicious, very complex, meat, kirsh, exotic spices with a hint of bacon fat. will probably warrant a couple of notches higher points a few years down the line.

Dinner with Nick and Erin. A step up from previous bottles I've had, maybe just bottle time, felt less hot and more complex with the opulent fruit.

Got so excited about the 1990 Montrose the other week that I had to try one of the 89s again. Whilst also a very big and opulent wine, it is just not hitting the high notes that the 90 seem to do, also some acid notes keep atttacking the palate.

Hard to fault anything in 89 HB, as it got everything I look for in a wine. Nose, aromatics, mouth feel and complexity, and it feels like it got plenty life ahead.

Bottle in very good shape, haven't had this in a while so a nice surprise that it delivered yet again, in no way does it seem to be past its peak or tired, just full on opulence.

Miles away from the finished product, still very primary and hot. Sure the back bone is there in fruit and structure, but wouldn't touch another bottle for 10 years.

Feels more like Napa than Tuscany. Absolutely packed with fruit, but pulls it off without being jammy as there are some prominent acidity around, very very 2003, you can feel the heatwave from the ripeness of the fruit. Wife loves it, but I prefer the 2000.

This wine has filled out since i last had it, very thick oily texture, defintely a food wine. Actually think i preferred it younger, just a bit too rich now with burnt toffee, butterscotch and less fresh acidity.

Blockbuster of a wine that still fels incredibly young at age 16... Felt it very similar to the 96. Had more of everything next to the Latour from the same year, both showed beautifully, but with the Harlan you get more fruit, concentration, complexity and length.

Held it's own vs a Harlan from the same year. Kept gettng better in the glass despite a long decant, still quite a lot of oak present I thought, red berries and cedar, next to the Harlan this was much lighter in colour and did not have the massive concentration an complexity of the american wine, but found the Latour to be slightly more refined.

2001 horizontal @ home. Anglus came out on top being the most well balanced and elegant of the line up, beating Montrose, Eglise Clinet, Ornellaia, Montelena and Tore Muga all from the same year. The common feature is how highly extracted and fruit forward all these wines were. Ornellaia was a crowd pleaser and came second followed by Montrose. All wines were tasted blind and funnily enough nobody got more than 3 right, even the tempranilllo based Torre Muga was hard to spot.

Prefer this to both Sassicaia from the same year as well as the 97 Sammarco. The fruit is purer both on the nose and in the mouth coupled with very fine silky tannins.

Sunday Paella Nice, haven't had a bottle of this for a while. Cigar box, saddle leather, plummy fruits and a bit of Cordier funk. Overall very nice, although I feel the gap to the 82 Gruaud has widened.

Incredible well rounded and has entered into its prime drinking window, lovely 'busy' mousse, straw gold colour. Fullbodied and expands nicely in the mouth. Fresh acidity that marries nuts, dough and toffee very well.

Could have fooled me for being a Le Montrachet from a decent producer. Incredibly rich on the palate displaying honey suckle, acacia flower and citrus fruits, high alcohol 14.4, but very nicely integrated. SAdly only one bottle left.

A perfectly stored bottle and dare I say even more youthful and vibrant than the recent bottle I had with reichken and co.
It's splitting hairs whether I prefer this or the 82, they both got that nice meaty/gamey, leathery, plummy notes that marries well integrated sliky tannins. Will try to get some more of this.

Pheasant feast at Elwing's. Yet another perfect bottle, although it was consumed at midnight after numerous previous bottles, it came through nicely with that trademark floral nose. Fruit is holding up well, still some tannins, but they are silky smooth. These bottles have been perfectly stored in a damp Scottish cellar and i think they still have 10 plus years of life ahead.

Hawksmoor lunch, my last bottle went down well with the grilled squid. Every bottle in this case have been good and it seems to age well, easily 5-10 years more in it. I guess Leeuwins success is the purity of the fruit with not too much oak.
