2014 A. et P. de Villaine Aligoté Bouzeron

Everything about this wine belies the reputation of aligote as an aperitif or something heaven forbid to blend in a kir. The color is a surprisingly rich gold compared to other aligote I've tried, with green highlights. The nose is full of ripe white and yellow orchard fruit, with mineral streaks, a light florality and almond nuttiness. Broad, full texture, which if not quite silky has a borderline luxuriousness before resolving in a bone dry finish. I felt it had the depth and heft of a wine aged in wood, and from what I could gather, it spends up to 12 months in large, old barrels. There's a lees-driven creaminess as well. Interestingly, the producer indicates this relatively concentrated wine is made from the aligote dore clone as opposed to the lighter, less aromatic aligote vert.

Bouzeron is the only Burgundy appellation dedicated to aligote and in the hands of M. Villaine there's no surprise it transcends its humble station.

Since it's already June 2019, I soundly reject the community drink date ending in 2018. Lots of life left here.

This wine just keeps on delivering after 15 years in bottle. Tonight the 2003 La Chapelle offersup an absolutely stunning and totally mind-boggling nose. The nose delivers layer after layer which seem to open up like an like an old map of what you can experience in a wine. There is elegant raspberry, strawberry, fresh thyme and mint accompanied by lemon and orange zest. A secondary layer delivers cacao but also milk chocolate and wet saddle leather. After a while the classical Asian spice box appears, just like in a good Chateauneuf. The palate adds perfectly to the overall impression with balance and total integration and not one hard edge. This wine is the definition of perfect integration. A totally gorgeous drinking experience tonight - but will last for many years to come.

3/2/18, 8:08 AM - Thanks for posting this note. I had one last night at a tasting and it showed really well! No rush on these, though, as this is almost certainly very early in its drinking window.

A16 Pizza, Sideways, & Some Fine Wines (Chez Dalluge, MN): I don't know who's bright idea it was to open '02 Dom after a gazillion pinots, but damn, it was genius - thanks Dave for opening this gem. Ok, where to start, it's '02, it's Dom, do you really need anything more. Fine, this is aromatic, gorgeous fine bead and creamy mousse, power and sophistication, toast, fresh baked bread, pear, intensity, brilliant minerality, impeccably balanced. Thank you sire, may I have another... and another...oh for pete's sake, just back up the truck. A wine I continue to adore.

No notes taken, but I really like this bottling from Turley. Drinking great right now. No reason to wait.

8/8/15, 5:34 PM - Thanks. I've only got one left and doubt it will make it that long, but I also have a 2009 that is approaching six years and will have to give it a shot.

Champagne and Pinot Noir Tasting: This bottle was singing from the get-go. Soaring nose of elegant red fruit with just a touch of spice. In the mouth this is barely mid-weight, with a silky smooth texture and perfect balance. This was wine of the flight and wine of the night. Many thought this was the DRC.
