I feel like I was supposed to be more impressed with this wine, given what I had been told by others. It was nice enough, but not remarkable. Good darks fruit and nice primary notes, good structure, but not a lot of details on the nose or palate. If it were an $18 bottle, I would have been happy, but it wasn't.

If you love Napa cabs, you'll love the '13 Materium. It's big, opulent, fruity with plenty of tannins. If you're more of a Burgundy kind of person, you'll find this bottle to taste like candy, or, you might even find it offensive and wonder what some us are thinking. On the other hand, if you're anything like my middle brother, who lives in Norway and loves California wines, you might find yourself fantasizing about grabbing the bottle in front of your friends and running away to a hiding place where you can drink it all by yourself even if you know it would be social suicide. And even then, it might be a close call whether or not to go through with it. The '13 Materium is that good.
I think you can make a lot of comparisons between Hundred Acre and Maybach. They share a lot of characteristics but I think the Hundred Acre wines generally just offer up a bit more structure and complexity.

Christopher Tynan: Get out your differential equation cheat-sheet kids because this Syrah is one PRI-MAR-Y panther. If you even know what a ‘linear polynomial in the unknown function and its derivatives’ means, or think that a0(x)y+a1(x)y′+a2(x)y′′+⋯an(x)y(n)+b(x)=0 is a good opening for a Hallmark card, then 1.) Why are you on Cellar Tracker? (You should be minting money at some dot-com startup in Palo Alto), and 2.) You will love the 2018 Tynan Judge Syrah in its current form. Blackberry seed, crunchy blackberry, rigid red licorice (like when you used to bite the ends off both sides of a Red Vine, shove it in your large icy Coke at the movies, and use it as a straw), and frozen blood (like in The Thing) flavors straight-arm their presence over the palate with authority and steely-eyed intent. Acid pops and clenches on the cheeks, closing out with a finish that is direct, no-nonsense, and quite frankly, wickedly irresistible. It’s like watching a favored anti-hero playing Jeopardy! and mopping the floor with the competition. “Who is… Snake Plissken?!”

And just when you think the Daily Double has ya all caught up and you’re about to lose everything, a hefty swirl in the glass awakens meatier roast beef, sanguine, salami, olive, black cherry, and purple plum skin notes that add motivational layers and budding complexities that beam with signals of what’s to come of this wine. It’s a bit of a young Cornas-Hermitage half-breed, and is most certainly planted more in the meatier plot than its year-older 2017 sibling, which is a redder-fruited and floral Cote Rotie-type of contrast. This 2018 reminds me of a taut 2015, which is a great thing, as I love what the 2015 is morphing into as time goes on. The 2018 has more overt freshness than I recall from the 2015 when it was at a similar stage, but a time-machine forecast of the 2018 seems to indicate it is off to a racing start. Just know that the track its on is more of a long-haul competition. Of course, if you’re looking for cocktail plush party bomb gratification, maybe best to head west over to Hall or something equally cotton-candied. If you’re a cerebral cool-climate Social Network kind of Rhone Ranger, then this is your wine without question. Hold bottles until you figure out the Diophantine equation and master the summing of three cubes.

To use a term that my kids’ generation frequents, this is FIRE!
Bright red fruits explode from the glass - underripe strawberry, cranberries and wild cherry (I know that’s dark red but it’s the only cherry I like). Pretty but not austere or boring. Deft acidity that seems to interject itself in all the right places, at all the right times. No better example than in the finish where, without it, you might be saying “Meh”. Instead, I’m yelling WOW!
I’m a huge fan!
(Thank you Tegan. Not only for this project but as much so, for changing the style of Turley’s Zins - Balance, even while maintaining full, rich fruit and the Zin-typical, high ABV’s.)

2019 Base. I usually let my champagne sit a few weeks after shipping, but couldn’t help myself pulling this one immediately. Hailing from Celles-sur-Ource, Etienne and his wife Anne took over the family estate in 2006, but only started bottling anything on their own in 2014 (less than 1,000 bottles). Blend of 80% Pinot noir and 20% Pinot Blanc, disgorged 25Feb22 with 2 g/l dosage. The nose has lovely fruit to it, and the first sip Carrie’s a ton of green apple, with that slight tartness of acid that can accompany. There’s some other ripe orchard fruit on the outside of the mouth providing some sweetness of fruit, and some really nice spice notes from the Pinot Blanc. This is enjoyable but I think will be great with a few years of bottle age. A really good first showing.

Extended decant, Deep, dark color, nose of dark fruit with some floral notes and secondary notes. Pure, linear, smooth mouthfeel, tannins smooth but present. Long finish. Very pleasing.
  • DaButtah commented:

2/21/23, 10:08 AM - Excellent review. More people need to reference the PLEASING aspect of wines. I personally would like to see a rating scale based solely on how pleasing (or not) a wine is. Maybe a Pleasing Scale of 1-5 (assuming "very pleasing" would slot in around the 3-4 range but I'm willing to discuss) is the order of the day?

Same as the last couple of bottles......both good and bad. The good is that this wine is still very good......classic high-end Napa CS and classic Dominus. Was decanted for about an hour and a half. The bad is that this was, I believe, the fourth bottle in a row where only the top half of the cork came out.....and the remainder more or less crumbled. The crumbling was so bad that I had to decant a second time with a cheese cloth filter because there was so much fine cork crumbs floating on top after the first decant.

One other comment......there are a lot of bottles of this wine still in cellartracker.com inventories. It is not going to get better from here. We should be enjoying this one now.

This was just a train wreck of a Cabernet Not corked, just terrible. Nothing but half measures that resulted in disaster. A real lesson in what not to do.
  • DaButtah commented:

6/28/22, 2:19 AM - Many specific things and all of them related to trying oh so hard to be something it isn’t. Disjointed & manipulated extraction. Strikes me as classic “let’s make a specific wine that a specific customer demographic will buy” instead of making a wine that’s completely informed by the vineyard and vintage. I have no doubt plenty of people will enjoy this but to me this is pure marketing in a bottle and an easy PnP straight down the drain.

A blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (80-85%) with some Merlot (approx. 15%), Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot (0-5%). Aged for approximately 20 months in oak barriques (40% new). 14,6% alcohol. Tasted in 2011-2000 Togni Cab vertical.

Dark, slightly translucent and somewhat evolved deep pomegranate color. Savory, somewhat earthy and a bit restrained nose with slightly evolved, layered aromas of wizened blackberries, sweet dark plums, some autumnal notes of damp leaves, a little bit of toasty mocha oak, light blueberry tones, an evolved hint of smoky campfire character, a touch of fresh blackcurrant and a whiff of exotic spices. The wine is firm and full-bodied on the palate with a chewy, structure-driven and rather Bordeaux-like overall feel. There are intense flavors of ripe blackcurrants and fresh dark plums, some earthy tones, light woody notes of cedar, a little bit of gravelly minerality, autumnal hints of damp leaves and sous-bois and a touch of old leather. The wine is impressively structured with its high acidity and quite ample and still rather grippy tannins. The finish is savory, rather grippy and slightly warm with persistent, dry flavors of earthy and autumnal tones, some licorice root, a little bit of of toasty oak spice, light crunchy notes of fresh blackcurrant, a woody hint of pencil shavings and a touch of leafy greenness.

A very impressive and structure driven Cabernet that is slowly inching towards its plateau of maturity. Structure-wise this is still a strapping youngster, showing still impressive tannic frame and good acidity, but fruit-wise the wine is starting to display more tertiary tones along with the juicy fruit flavors. The overall feel is rather ripe, but not excessively so, making the wine come across as a very "Napa" for a Cab, yet in a delightfully old-school style. As a whole, this wine is almost on par with the terrific 2005 vintage, but if push comes to shove, I'd say 2005 is slightly better with its slightly less obvious ripeness and moderate level of alcohol.

Had a little taste before decanting for two hours - fairly harsh tannins as you would expect but a lot of fruit. Silky smooth after time in the decanter and by the end I was battling with my fizz-loving girlfriend to finish the bottle. Delicious wine and was a great accompaniment to my bone-in ribeye.

I dislike the VA, but can appreciate the dark core of this monster. I want more terroir I want more soul give me more verve. I suspect a lot of confirmation bias on the whole 100point scale thing as more people pop bottles

Edit: Day 2, one glass left over in the bottle. Even worse! Wine meet drain. Not sure how anyone can like this wine. I got lots of hate mail for this note, score, and suggestions abound of me having a flawed bottle. What happens if others just have flawed palates?

2004 is one of the worst vintages for red Burgundy in the last 2 decades, many 2004 red Burgundies are vegetal and have been maturing in an unappealing way. Tasted blind – Maturing array of dark cherries, meaty undergrowth, green stems and hints of cabbage. Light bodied but tannins are austere. Weak vintage? 1994? Rhone CdP? Fonsalite? (66/100)

Received from a friend. First experience with the producer. Was advised to decant for awhile if opening soon (which I did). 55/45 Old vine Mourvèdre and Carignan blend. Wild nose on this and sinfully delicious on the palate. Strikes me as incredibly nimble even at this young stage and could pair well with a wide range of food. Stands up on its own as well. Super intrigued by this and very happy to have experienced it. If all Mourvèdre smelled and tasted like this...well a hell of a lot more folks would be drinking it.

I bot 3 bottles. Opened 1st. Very sour and not much else in the taste, little aroma cardboardy, likely corked. So opened 2nd. Smelled like detergent and tasted like it. Definitely corked/TCA. So opened 3rd. Tastes like a Cali pinot which I would rate very well at 94 points. All 3 were drunk side by side and all different, 2 flawed. I will never buy this producer again and I recommend others against it. For a 2012, unacceptable conditions at the winery to have 2 of 3 bottles tainted with TCA, likely due to how they clean their equipment based on my understanding of what would cause this issue. So for $225 can buy 1 good bottle of wine and waste time on 2 others. Pass.
