Drunk with goose breast and garden produce. In a sweet spot this combined still vibrant plum and cherry fruit with iron, earth, leather and animale elements. The palate was perhaps more complete than the nose which drifted in and out. ****

Opened around 2 hours before serving. Pale ruby in colour, slightly younger looking for its age. The profile is very consistent with producer and site - pure cherry fruit with red raspberry type hints, floral notes, tar, sweet spice, and passing hints of truffley development. With air the wine gets richer and loses the crystalline feel it had earlier. Probably at the front end of its optimal drinking window, though this was my last bottle… ****++

Last bottle and despite a little more ullage than usually expected, this was in a perfect place after a gentle decant for an hour or so. While there were notes of blackcurrant and baked red fruit remaining, the profile was mainly about a very arrractive richness richness - both in the nature of the fading fruit and also leather, grilled meat and smoke; there are some dark earthy notes but not much evolution in the forest floor etc direction at the moment. Really excellent ****1/2+

Double decanted two weeks before drinking and consumed occasionally across six months.
The colour is almost like cognac but with more of a light orange tone. Although initially a little fiery, after the first couple of weeks the nose settled down to show a patina of bitter marmalade, dried citrus, vanilla, dates and molasses, with various rancio elements such as cedar, polished leather and old furniture. The palate feels largely dry, with moderately intense flavours of seville orange peel and dried apricot, bitter lemon, figs, dark honey, cloves and almonds. The finish has a mild fire to it, though not so much that I would have thought the liquid to be all aguardente rather than a mix with sercial. Certainly very unique and charming. It perhaps lacks a little intensity though at the same time has particularly striking length, with the slight viscosity one associates with old whisky. ****1/2+

Decanted for 2 hours. Still deep in colour. Quite a rich profile - slightly brambly blackberry and dark cherry fruit, with some faint evolution of undergrowth, smoke and just a little meatiness; a prominent mineral background underneath. Really needs another 5-10 years to be at its best ****(*)

Light gold. Has come on nicely since last bottle 3 years ago. Pure nose of ripe lemon and apricot confit, with a clear drizzle of light honey. The palate shows hints of nougat and savoury pastry coming out with air. Hugely enjoyable ****1/2

Deep amber in colour, with darker rim. Burnished orange, dried apricot, jellied quince, dark honey, early emerging mature notes of nuts, possibly figs. There was a good balance of freshness, high sweetness and delineation, very enjoyable. ****+

Bottle believed to be 1988 but without vintage neck label or any sign of year on cork. Decanted briefly as cork hard to extract. Light gold in colour, the wine showed a little younger and fresher than expected. Ripe peach with elements of grapefruit, lime and quinine sat against a slightly honeyed and spiced background, with that distinctly dry slightly slatey finish, and prominent length. ****

Two recent bottles showed consistently: has matured quite a lot in the last 4-5 years since previous bottles. Still that prominent rich yellow fruit with orange and saffron overtones, but with the slate background now softer and with an aged element of tea coming through. Showing well but might be slightly past peak ****

Two recent bottles, opened slightly in advance. Creamy yellow fruit, with white floral and orangey peel elements and a cool undertone. The natural richness from the village has come through well with age - I would say this wine is at peak now ****

For J’s birthday at the Flitch. Gently decanted before serving. Very similar to last bottle in 2017 - soft Cabernet fruit towards the redder end of the spectrum, leafy development, mellow leather and tobacco, with a comforting background of embers. This was very elegant but is on a slight downwards slope ***1/2+

This must be the best macvin around - probably because the age of the Marc used. A complex nose with prominent Marc character alongside burnished yellow and orange fruit; the palate is much more fruit focused with sweet yellow fruit but again with the orange and burnished elements. ****+

Label was torn over vintage but cork revealed 1991. Great level and colour when poured was only light gold. Medium weight, typical profile of white peach, floral tones, golden slightly honeyed citrus and an almost quinine-like edge - slightly sweet feeling but stony and seemingly dry on the finish. Particularly enjoyable for its balance and perfect maturity ****1/2

Magnum. On opening this was tight but opened well across 2 hours. Rich lemon, redder apple, hazelnut, toast, very lightly honeyed. Maybe wait 5 more years for next magnum ***1/2

Good fill level and condition but I was a bit disappointed - not sure if it’s just where the wine has got to or was slightly sub par. Fading red fruit, saddle-type leather, burning embers and light notes of garrigue. There were still some firm drier tannins which is probably a combination of vintage and the fruit having faded a lot. A softly spoken expression which I hoped would be better ***?

Opened this to make sure it was developing ok, needn’t have worried - tight on opening, double decanted for two hours; quite a medley of fruit - apricot, peach, quince, melon, slight exotic notes - with other notes such as pine nuts and light straw; rich and a little fat but with plenty of freshness. I would say this can go another 10 years but might be close to peak now. ****1/2

Bottle had slight older seepage so I opened now rather than holding. Needn’t have worried - wine was in top condition. Decanted for 5 hours and out on substantial weight. Similar to my last experience with Graham’s 1970: lush waves of primarily red fruit - strawberry, darker plums, cherry - but with notable development - soft leather, dark chocolate, fig notes and a light mint element; spirit was very well integrated and the tannins soft. This is past the voluptuous stage but was still 50 years young really ****1/2-*****

Similar to last note but perhaps with more of a dark earthy character. There is definitely a slight caramely evolution on this but only very much in the background. Nice and terroir expressive but not of particular interest. ****

This had evolved pretty quickly over the last 3 years since last bottle (assuming this was a sound one). Yellow fruit somewhat faded, rich pastry and dried fruit, an orange liqueur element, acid sitting a bit uncomfortably. Given how good this was when young this didn’t show well ***

2008 base. Given a bit of air, this quickly opened up and was dense and expressive. Relatively little prominent oxidative character, the fruit was pretty rich across citrus, green apple and a slightly orange element; light bread, hints of pastry and nuts were underpinned by something stony and cool, almost slightly wintery. Felt like a big step up vs the Initial ****1/2+

Needed a little air on opening but was reasonably ready to go. Maturing citrus and stonefruit, quite ripe and rich, with a classic old school Burgundian buttery edge and a slight stoniness in the background. Perhaps just lacking a little complexity but that didn’t decrease the enjoyment much ****+

First bottle; will age the rest of the pack. Decanted very gently as was pretty tight on opening. Quite ripe green apple with a clear hint of bluey-purple fruit, light but reasonably rich pastry and a chalky minerality with just slight savoury Pinot hints. Promising but didn’t seem to have the same energy as the 2012 at this stage. ****+

First bottle from case. Decanted for 2 hours. Probably not long enough. Profile still seemingly quite young, although drinking quite well now: dark cherry, liquorice with hints of cedar, chocolate and figs. After a couple of positive early bottles, this was disappointing - all of the issues with Portuguese dry reds - too hot, clumsy feeling, lacking freshness. Not sure what has happened to this really, maybe just a bad bottle or needs more time **

Last bottle was 30 months ago but this is ageing well. Green fruit, almonds, straw, strong vein of freshness, almost with a saline quality. Texture from the skin contact is a positive element. There is clearly an oxidative element to the style but it is nicely in balance ***1/2

Opened an hour before serving. Slightly dried cherry fruit with notes of fruitcake, leather, smoke and incense. The ripasso nature is very clear but the wine isn’t heavy or overly rich. There are faint VA overtones but in the background such that they add slightly to complexity. In the later stages of peak maturity. ****++
