John's Goodbye Dinner (take 1) (Le Coq Rico, NYC): Pollen and petrol. Orange marmalade with gasoline nose. Light but intense and a great end to the evening with the floating dessert and mille feuille

John's Goodbye Dinner (take 1) (Le Coq Rico, NYC): Double decanted 5 hours prior to service. A good year for Lafite. This is classic Bordeaux with cedar and blackberry aromas and flavors. Regal. Round and loaded with fruit, graphite, and wood. Lead pencils. Awesome drying tannins, subtle and well integrated vanilla and oak, and incredible finish.

John's Goodbye Dinner (take 1) (Le Coq Rico, NYC): High toned. Red, big acidity, red fruit, super dry tannins. Salty nose with raspberry flavors. Opens up prettier and more integrated with some evergreen and black tea flavors & tannins. Probably good on its own but paled in comparison to its competition
Red

John's Goodbye Dinner (take 1) (Le Coq Rico, NYC): My WOTN for it's surprise and texture. The nose would lead you to think its dead, but upon first sip it revealed it most certainly was not. Awesome chocolate notes with a silky roundness. Full, rich, with sweet spice up front and smoke on the finish. Earthy and punchy on the finish, too. Awesome.
White

John's Goodbye Dinner (take 1) (Le Coq Rico, NYC): So sexy and sultry. The texture! Absolutely seductive with amazing concentration of flavor. Buttery and rich in flavor but not heavy, amazing acidity, and incredibly long. An impeccable wine that was perfect with the mac and cheese (oh my!) and chicken jus potatoes.

John's Goodbye Dinner (take 1) (Le Coq Rico, NYC): Wow! So aromatic and "pungent" (dan). Loads of apples (bruised and baked), nuts, vanilla. A huge Champagne with richness and density. Apples on apples with cloves and bright bright acid. Great now and a great counterpart to chicken terrine and foie gras.

For me this is what aged white wines are all about. Orange in color with a sublime nose filled with cider, caramel, Christmas spice, baked oranges, apricot, nuts, and apple core.... Although there was definitely some apple present, the dominant flavors were those of cider and spice, clear indicators of aging gracefully into meditative bliss. I love this wine.
