Restaurant purchase for Fathers Day; decanted and throughly enjoyed with dinner. Much different from the 2011 which seemed more earthy and austere. By contrast this is much riper, fuller, and concentrated with bright black and red currant, lots of mocha, and nicely balanced with fruit, tannin and acid. Still primary, but I expect this will be a real jewel in another 2-3 years after it gains some complexity and settles a bit. Worked well with braised short ribs, pork carnitas, and a gourmet burger. Excellent and long finish.

11/12/18, 2:20 PM - great review. I became your fan after I saw you liking the 2011 Heitz which I loved. Curious if you had a chance to try the 2013.

on opening lush tannins delicious to drink now. After one day of slow o the wine evolved and I tasted the toasted wood and cedar, fruit in the background - needs more (or less) air time. Will try to post next day tasting note.

I'm no expert but I think this wine has closed down, if I have the meaning of that term correct. It's all tannin now with very little fruit getting through. The same tastes are there: dark cherry, leather, tobacco, but they're way in the background, which leaves the tannins feeling unbalanced and harsh. Perhaps it could just be past its window, but I drank a bottle within the last six weeks that was excellent. I'll probably let it sit overnight and try it again tomorrow. Weird, they don't even seem like the same wine. It could also be a faulty bottle.

I checked. It's been eight weeks since the last bottle.

1/30/16: The bottle sat stoppered in the fridge for five days and then I let it get back to cellar temperature and tried it again. Much better than earlier, still a bit too tannic but the fruit is more forward. I may have been having an off night last week, or I just paired it with the wrong food. I'm drinking it with olives and a mixture of cheeses tonight but it would probably go much better with a steak. Still not as good as the last bottle but way, way better than when I first opened it. Probably should be decanted and given lots of time to breathe. We'll see how the next bottle goes. I upped it from an 85 to an 88 based on tonight's tasting.

12/7/16, 6:45 AM - This was my go to cheap favorite Chateau, till yesterday. Don't know what the heck happened but it was tannic and very little fruit was coming out of it. Not what I remember it being. Left it for day 2 to try. Maybe it did shut down, however last one of these I had was about 3 months ago and it was excellent.

This is a wine we buy almost every year. It is made in a rich, full style that my wife enjoys. Oak, spice and lush fruit. It seldom disappoints and over achieves for its price. On form again in 2014.

I loved the 2012 but was disappointing with 2013. Is the 2014 better than previous year?

Heavy nose of fruits and tropical flavour on first pour. Too strong and can only be drunk alone.

5/5/15, 8:12 AM - this goes great with Shrimp or Lobster ... just has to be paired with heavier food to not overpower it.

Russk. I brought to Leftovers at Pablo's. 2hr+ decant. The beautiful nose gives it away. Yes, oaky and full of dill. But in a good way. Nice acidity. No rough edges. So supple. Wish I had more. Tied for WOTN with the 2004 Valpane Valpane. Best wine with the cedar smoked salmon.

    thank you.

beautifully balanced with no flavors too obvious, apple, pear, slight oak on entry and slight butterscotch on finish. Had with King crab legs

Any others you'd recommend from your experience?

Ok .. maybe this is just not my kinda wine as I am noticing high sensitivity to acid and tannin. For me this was light on the nose, too much tart, and avg finish. Consider that I am no wine pro though. Maybe I'll grow someday to these kinds of wine but for now, this is just too dry for me. Maybe it would have went better with high fats food like a filet mignon or something.

1/7/15, 9:38 AM - it was also maybe a bit too early to open up. Should have waited a year or two.

Beautiful scotch. Not as musky or harsh as some out there. More on a smooth, a bit sweet side. I usually go for Glenlivet 21, Balvenie 17 Madeira, but this one is right up there for me.
