Nowhere as impressive as the 95 Dom P2 I had few months ago. The 95 Oenotheque was fresh and young, but not showing the layers, depth and nuances of the P2 which resembled a Montrachet with bubbles. Lacking the tension you would expect.
  • Burgnick commented:

10/25/19, 4:00 PM - Hi, 95 Oeno was disgorged in 2005 while 95 P2 was disgorged in 2015. The 10 year difference actually makes the difference in my opinion even though the base wine is still the same. If you look at the market price, the P2 is 20-30% more expensive. Hope it helps.

The aroma is very prieure roch with rose petals and perfume. Palate is lean, sour and tart. Nose alone is 92 and perhaps only 85 on the palate.
  • Burgnick commented:

1/20/19, 1:35 AM - I don't think so. I have followed prieure roch for a while. Rarely does his wine gain significant weight with aging

Same batch from the last bottle but the nose was funky. I disagreed with some tasters that the wine was corked. Palate built up with dark fruit and tobacco in the glass. More vibrant with time. But the bottle tonight was not the best representation of this wine.

Slow oxed for one hour before serving. Nose displayed some white flowers, minerals, honey and yellow fruit. Palate was elegant and ripe. But for the vintage, the ripeness was well managed. The backend had hint of bouchard’s wood. A very elegant montrachet that is drinking at its peak.
  • Burgnick commented:

10/1/18, 5:20 AM - Yes. Surprisingly the acidity of this wine was still high despite the ripe fruit. When it was served blind, we guessed 99,00,04. Ripe vintage but not as ripe as 01

This is quite a beast but it took more than two hrs of aeration to open up the wine. Nose and palate are intense with black currant, spice, pepper and oak. Palate is extracted with lots of power but it still retains the regal finesse. I am not a big fan of this style but I appreciate the craftmanship of this beauty. It is still too young to crack a bottle now. It needs at least 5 more years in my humble opinion. The potential is 95-96 when it is fully mature.

93 is not a drc vintage. Nose has cinnamon, stems, and spice. Palate lacks sweetness with a bitter aftertaste. It is very earthy and medicinal. Doesnt taste like drc at all. I have to be mean on this wine especially how expensive it is. Drinking off the peak.

Bottle from a cold cellar, in neck fill, only bottom third of cork tainted. Slow ox’ed for 2h, followed by a 45 min decant. Still a fairly dark but clear garnet, no signs of browning whatsoever. Great, regal Pauillac from the first glass. Dark fruit, a touch sous bios and wood spices on the nose, plenty of iron on the palate, initially just a bit tight but really blossoms around the 60 min mark in the decanter, structure and tannins are still there but perfectly integrated with the still good fruit. Medium + finish of 45 seconds.
Unlike other notes here, and despite this being from a cold cellar, I thought it showed best somewhere at the 60-90 min mark in the decanter (+ 2h slow ox in this case), after that the fruit started retreating just a bit with the tannins becoming more evident. Still excellent but just a notch below the peak tonight.
Bottom line is this is a superb Pauillac, at First Growth level, and in my eyes in the middle of its peak drinking window. Likely to stay in this window for another 10-15 years and will be certainly still very nice to drink in 30 years.

Decanted for an hour. Nose has some cedarwood, truffle, cassis, and ink. Palate is still restrained with good power. It lacks the roundness and smoothness of the other cos vintage I like. The finish is a bit bitter. Perhaps it just needs more time?!

With 2.5 hours of aeration, 90 Lynch Bages is drinking beautifully. This is a classic paulliac with tobacco, dark fruit, red currant, truffle, earth, soil, cedarwood and smoke. Lots of power and complexity on the palate. Classic Paulliac firing in all cylinders. It is still very young but it has just entered its drinking window. One of my favourite bordeaux in the 90s.

I have had this wine many times since it was first released. The wine has declined a lot. It has the leroy perfume but the fruit is drying up with a bitter aftertaste. Over the peak. For people who are chasing this wine at >800usd now in auction, it is absurd and unwise.
  • Burgnick commented:

9/7/17, 7:04 PM - I have had like 5 bottles of this wine since it was first released. The first bottle was the best. This wine has dropped significantly. I can confidently say its over the peak. We blinded the wine. 4 people called it a 04 bourgogne including me. If you want to try a 04 leroy now, Gevrey is the best in relative term.

Decanted for 90 mins. Smoked fruit, licorice, tea, prune, sweet red fruit, tobacco and earth on the nose. The nose is beautiful. Palate is expressive with tea, prune and red fruit. It is still very elegant and refined brunello. I expected little more depth and complexity from a 97s, but its still very charming. Everyone likes it tonight.

The nose had vanilla, velvets, oak, caramel and black currants. It certainly could have benefited from a much longer decant. The palate had round fruit with a very balanced sweetness. This is a modern style super tuscan, but its actually pretty damn good if you enjoy a juicy, big and opulent cab. Give it 10 years or so. 92+

This is a big wine, colour is deep for Burgundy, nose is exploding with fresh fruit, well-controlled wood and some evidence of the usage of whole clusters. Mouthfeel is silky, tanins are refined and the wine seems to be on path for greatness when it grows up. Still tight and a little restrained, the other bottles will sit in the cellar for another 10 years before revisiting.

Agree with Jeff Leves note on this wine. From a perfect bottle, initially very tight and so decanted for 2.5hrs (about right). In the glass the aromas were initially some damp fur but with air the classic tobacco, cedar and leather notes of Haut Brion, albeit less expressive or intense than other vintages from the 80s. Lovely rich mouthfeel and surprisingly concentrated in the glass.... But really lacks complexity in the mouth, and there is a green and drying tannic finish which just makes me wonder how well this will actually age. Drank the whole bottle over about 2hrs but it didn't improve further. I'm not sure there will be much upside here from further cellaring, although I hope to be wrong. Drink to 2020? I love Haut Brion but this is a disappointing vintage for me.
