Had a nice steak dinner planned...things went a little sideways with some tough family news. Honestly went to Eurocave and snagged something without thinking. I saw what I had grabbed and thought no way, a 2017??? but what the hell. Damn this was open and alive and it was fantastic. Man the fruit...the tannins and acid just electric tonight for a young legit cab that was popped n poured.

It was one of those nights when wine takes a distant backseat to life....yet you are overwhelmed by its simple pleasure.

Well done Kian, Karen and team.

9/16/21, 7:32 AM - Thank you very much!!!! We think the 17’s are fantastic also. Shame some painted the 2017 vintage with such a broad stroke and thought the entire vintage was compromised for everyone. There are some awesome wines out there waiting for homes. And more importantly, we hope your family challenges are overcome. Karen & John

We had not been drinking Bordeaux varietals for some time, but when i fired up some NY Strips on the grill, i had the hankering for a nice Merlot. Boy did the JEC Merlot deliver. Popped and poured thru an aerator, and drank over about 40 minutes, this reminded me why I liked it so much at a tasting a bit back. Lush dark fruit (plums maybe), with a medium to full body and a perfect amount of acidity to keep this fresh tasting and in balance. A hint of sweet tannins on the finish. This went fantastically with the steak. Will have to reorder...Kudos Karen and John for a great bottle.

Immediate intoxicating nose of blackberry, plum, and other dark fruit with a hint of pepper. I could park my nose over the decanter and be happy for a long time. There was some sediment - a few crumbles on the bottom of the cork, and some crumbles & powder in the decanter. This is absolutely delicious and has been since release. It's getting less tannic but still has sufficient structure. What a bargain!

Dark and dense. Needed a couple hours in the decanter. After opening up a bit, the nose shows sweet red fruits, pencil shavings, and chocolate.

This completely coats the palate with black current, blackberry, cassis, and cherry. The finish is full and long. I like that this isn’t just a huge fruit bomb.

30 minute decant. Insanely dark color, hangs to the walls. Dark black fruits on the nose. Little heat but in a way that adds. Oak well integrated, cassis, herbaceous (very savory) almost, all little anise, slight Tobacco/dried leaves. Delicious right now but a good number of years left.

Very deep dark magenta color. Tobacco leaf, cinnamon gum, black cherry and cedar on the earthy nose. Velvety palate with good acidity. Firm, full tannins on the medium long finish. Too Bordeaux-like for a California Cabernet.

3/7/20, 2:09 PM - Sorry you did not enjoy this wine and its style. Our Yates cab is definitely more “old world” than others we produce and not everyone’s style. We have several cabernets and hope you’ll give one of them a try.

Sadly, you could taste that there was an amazing wine under that TCA taint. I will try again soon with another bottle
  • Taylor56 commented:

12/9/19, 10:10 AM - Very sorry for the flawed bottle - unfortunate as it is a lovely wine and, of course, we will gladly replace the bottle. We will email you regarding shipping a replacement.

Remnants of a nice wine, but sour and shrill. Could not drink. Bought on sale from NJ store. Same as previous taster?
  • Taylor56 commented:

3/19/19, 9:41 AM - NJ store on Rt. 22? If so, not great storage conditions and they bought that wine from a former distributor about ten years ago. Can you email details to us at wine@jeanedwardscellars.com. Thank you.

When she had her first sip of this, my girlfriend reached for the bottle and upon seeing the label said, "Jean Edwards. Of course. They're SO consistent." I've yet to try a varietal that they didn't completely ace. I'm terrible with descriptors, but would would just say that this has a good backbone, a great lengthy finish, terrific mouthfeel and has this elegance that I don't find in a lot of other malbecs. Terrific stuff.

Great wine that really opened up and filled out with some time in the glass. Powerful yet still has the trademark finesse of the '12 vintage. Probably best to hold for a few more years but drinking very well now.

PnP.
Wine is deep purple, opaque.
Deep intoxicating nose of black fruits, gravel, baking spices, vanilla.
Med+ to full body, tannic but integrated, plush texture, layered, long finish.
Black fruits dominate, great earthy gravel and wet stones come through to balance, slight toasted almond vanilla.
Really great balance of Napa fruit and mountain terroir.

Great story about this wine, i bought the '11 at a local wine shop and the bottle was corked.
I simply posted "corked" on my CT.
Was immediately contacted by the producer with offer of a replacement. Not only did they deliver on their promise, they hand delivered to my house, personalized the btl, and upgraded to a far superior vintage.
Not only is the wine phenomenal, that is just amazing customer appreciation and passion for your product.

I'll be on the lookout for more of this juice...*sorry for the long note but much deserved.

PnP at restaurant, cork broke.

Edited: As I thought about this bottle, I believe more and more that it was flawed. While not a complete waste, it was not nearly as good as last bottle that i had a few months back. The thin and a bit sour profile would seem to confirm that, and I believe it to be "off".

Bought at a discount from a store that may not have given it the care and love it deserved. If not purchased directly from the winery (and particularly if you got it where I did) you may want to beware...

As noted - my other bottle was okay so YMMV
  • Taylor56 commented:

3/31/18, 3:11 PM - We know the store and unfortunately their storage conditions are not very good and temperatures are suspect. This particular wine was sold to them by a past distributor when we discontinued using them.

Dusty fruit up front of black cherry and cassis. Beautiful core of tobacco, Asian spice, and subtle notes of bell pepper, mocha, and cedar. Nice balance, smooth tannins, good finish to it.

Tasted over two days. I think it is a wine that Jean Edwards winery will be proud of for many years to come. It is still a 'youngster' (even after 4 hours of decanting), but it opens up.
The nose open up very nicely on the berry fruits (a bit more of the pepper as the time in decanter increases). Now, after few hours the earthy tastes do open up. Very dark color (Dark, Dark Ruby/purple) . Long legs. IMHO, well balanced on the palate. Works well with small meats and veggies I got for lunch. I think it can also enjoy lower temps in general (aka- not a summer in New York). Medium plus finish, and leaves you with a feeling of more (I want more...)

What was interesting about the 'nose' of the wine is that I decanted it again Friday morning, left it in the microcellar and went out. When I came back and opened it again it felt like a brand new wine. [Still, feels like a youngster.] Overall: I would vote BUY. The only thing that makes me sad is that now I have only two bottles to see how they develop over the years :( . But, I took one for the team. And it was well worth it. Enjoyable drinking and will develop for years to come. Great with small meats and veggies. We voted with our glasses and the bottle is almost done :-)

Well done, Karen and John. Well done.

(92 with a positive prospect once it gets more cellaring time. Currently recommended few hours decanting)
