Fairly forward nose of cassis, with a non-intrusive backdrop of cedarwood. Medium bodied with a balanced, but not substantial, palate. Perhaps lacks a huge amount of depth but still drinks very well indeed. Despite the reputation of its sibling I cannot see huge ageing potential here, but that does not take away from its drinkability now.

Dark purple fruits & salty black liquorice on the nose. Meaty palate with a lovely sanguine acidity. Robust, masculine, and drinking well.

Settled into a nice vibe. Lovely classic nose of bracken, blackcurrant and demerara, albeit somewhat straightforward. Nicely balanced palate but lacking in some punch. Good value, easy drinking Bordeaux.

Terracotta at the rims. Nose of cherry, cigar box, ash, green pepper, white pepper, with a lift a a green citrus fruit. Well integrated but strong tannins, well balanced with fine raspberry finish.

This is singing right now: lovely balance, tannins have mellowed, plenty of fruit and secondary earthy characteristics on the nose. Just on the turning point, starting to orange at the rims but by no means past it. Good finish, much more rounded structure now. Tannins still present but not overly bitter and certainly not rummy and over-ripe, just a pleasing backdrop to an accessible and well structured palate. Excellent.

Dark amber. Some residual mousse which quickly faded - but that's OK. Warm, rich nose, classic Bolly spices with layers of caramel, toffee and toast. Surprisingly zesty finish. Completely intact after 30 years, and quite delicious.

Bright, translucent amber in the glass. Enticing, rich and complex nose of hazelnut, peaches, tropical fruits, caramel. Very little botrytis. Delightful mouthfeel, not at all weighty, effortless and lengthy finish. A difficult year for Yquem and perhaps lacking some of the weight and depth of other vintages; nonetheless I enjoyed this immensely. Interesting, accessible and eminently drinkable. Can't say fairer than that.

Deep purple/crimson. Nose is heavily dominated by earth, and although there are some pleasant undertones of red fruit, sweet spice and demerara they are all somewhat vying for attention. Tannins of soft and rounded with and light to mid-weight palate. Overall, a little earth heavy and out of kilter on he nose, but rounded and drinkable with some typical characteristics.

Dark and glossy, initially a little reticent on the nose but with hints at luxurious dark fruits backed by a warm toasty, nutty odours. Firm and well structured palate but fiercely tannic. Slightly closed down at the moment. Very good potential overall.

Sweet dark fruits on the nose with rich new oak undertones. Heady, alcoholic palate is overwhelmed by woody, oaky finish; good bite but no complexity. Considerable power for the price, but lacking in real character.

Dark red in the glass. A touch of sweet black cherry on the nose, overlain with coffee, brown paper and dark chocolate. There is touch of oak but it is pleasingly understated, allowing the merlot to predominate. In the mouth, the sweet tannins are fine and fresh. There appears to be little scope for further development, but altogether this is a delicious and thoroughly drinkable wine.

Deep ruby in the glass. Very fresh nose, heavily dominated with young oak, but with a very pure, precise background of ripe red currants and other red fruits. Cutting through it all there is a vegetal note which I am a little unsure of. Fabulous tannins, certainly under-ripe at the moment, initially a restrained bitterness but following through an effusive, sweet, rolling finish of excellent length. Excellent potential, provided everything integrates as it should.

Initially dominated by vanilla and spice, then after an hour or two an over-ripe scent of plump black cherries came to the fore, with a hint of black liquorice and mint leaf. Not much attack on the nose but with a pleasing, rounded, understated sexiness. Firm, tart palate with medium-weight tannins providing good structure. The promising integration of the oak bodes well for this wine and I feel it has still not reached its peak.

Despite only approaching it's 10th birthday this wine is surprisingly mature. Deep crimson in colour with a brick red/orange rim, it has a hearty, beefy nose of earth, burnt sugar and stewed fruits. The tannins are a little rugged, but rounded and approachable with a neat balance overall. Very good, and excellent value.

Dark purple in the glass. Lovely fresh lift on the nose, with black cherries and a smatter of sweet spice. There is a slightly funky, feral backdrop. Light to medium bodied palate, straightforward and inoffensive. A little muddled perhaps, with so many varietals vying for attention, but well produced and good value at this price point.

Very dense in the glass with the slightest hint of bricking towards the edges. Ripe fig, black pepper, and a hot, heavy, animalistic funk which is ever-present but never overpowering. The segue in to the palate is smooth and consistent, with fine, fluent tannins and substantial, rich mouthfeel. There is a definite sense of more to come from this wine. Excellent.

Very dark crimson in the glass. Black pepper on the nose with ripe blackberries, figs and black liquorice. Lots of heat. Finish is strongly spiced and very dry, of medium length with a twist of bitterness as the tannins kicks in mid-palate. Good balance overall; the rich, dark fruit acting as a much needed counterweight to the Shiraz-heavy spice.

Deep plum colour. Dark fruits on the nose with a higher sweet note of raspberries and strawberries. Burnt toffee, crumble and cream represent the pleasing oak characteristics, with more subtle floral and light spice elements. Smooth tannins, consistent but not opulent, with a medium length finish. The palate is sharp but not just from the tannins; there also is an enjoyable acidic bite in the mouth, akin to pressed cranberry juice. Still room for development, but excellent now with great potential.

My first Pegau. Seemed very tight and tannic on opening: ended up being decanted for 4 hours. It has a wonderful poise this wine. A delicious nose of cinnamon, blueberries, and raspberries with funky leather, liquorice and cedar undertones, with an almost seamless segue into a gentle, sweetly spiced and wonderfully smooth finish. The funk and character is always present, and the consistency from start to finish makes the whole experience utterly more-ish and totally satisfying: the complete package.

Not decanted. First impression was a fragrant musky scent - it reminded of me of a dishcloth(!)- however thankfully this soon lifted to reveal a fine, perfumed nose with a herbal, fresh overtone to dark fruits, tobacco and coal smoke beneath. If the nose hadn't already betrayed the pedigree, the palate certainly did: the tannins were youthful but so perfectly smooth and fine, so rich in texture and flavour, that the whole experience was seamless. Still, it took a little concentration to eek out everything this wine had to offer - it is still a little understated. Time will tell what more is to come.

The nose is the star here: full on, heavy and rich with stewed red fruit, spice and old tobacco. The finish is medium length, still some lingering tannin; just a little hollow mid-palate where you would expect more fruit to fully complement the enticing nose.

Fragrant, eathy nose is appealing but could do with a little more punch and complexity. Needs a little more sweetness/fruit to tame the rather austere and hollow finish. Struggling to asert any real character; perhaps a good match for the right food.

This wine is massive, dark and broody; the colour of crude oil in the glass, completely opaque. The nose is an impressive and enticing mix of blackest cherries, figs and dates, with undertones of coal smoke, acetone and black liquorice. The texture is beautifully smooth but the tannins are puckeringly bitter straight out of the bottle. When things eventually mellow the length is firm and impressive, with a stocky complexity underlying the eye-watering early tannins. Excellent potential; but needs a few more years to chill out.
