Dark red colour, few signs of aging. Nose was a bit funky at opening but stabilized quickly. A typical left-bank nose, fresh and pleasant but with little complexity. Cabernet clearly dominates. Palate is better, medium to high balanced, good structure and balance, more complexity too and a fine acidic tension. The finish is linear. Decent but not the best '86 Pomerol.

11/27/23, 2:32 AM - Definitely yes, the nose was evoking a typical Cabernet Franc-driven, left-bank Bordeaux wine. Not very spectacular and not as one could maybe expect. Right-bank Merlot lushness could only be detected in the palate, but with no extravaganza. As I'm sure you know, VCC is atypical in the sense that it has a very high proportion of CF (30-40% if I remember correctly), something which was very apparent in this bottle.

I was completely blown away by this bottle which had it all and represents a supreme example of what you should serve your guests who question the status of Bordeaux as one of the most accomplished wine areas in the whole world. Elegance, balance and power all in the same glass. Nose is wide open right upon opening, clean and pure fruit profile with great complexity: black fruits and a little touch of sudiste aromatics /olive, herbs). Perfect balance in the palate, iron fist in the velvet glove kind of. PGCC length. Really stunning at this moment!!

9/15/19, 11:10 AM - Hi Mark and thanks for the feedback. To be honest I was not expecting too much of that bottle and was about to give up on La Mission HB altogether: I had previously been left non-plussed by 1988 (twice) but also by 2001 which I had had at ten years of age (so the same mileage that this 2008 bottle now). I am glad I finally got a chance to revise my opinion, but I also think you have a point when you say that great wines should be great at several time points of their evolution, and not only after many decades. From now on I will drink my Bordeaux younger!

Really in a great place right now, the nose has opened up since last time but it is the palate and the wonderful mouthfeel which sticks out for this wine. Very pleasurable!

1/28/19, 12:57 AM - Hi, the wine was popped 'n poured, so no special preparation. The wine was delivering right after opening. I was fortunate to taste Rancia 2004, 2006 and 2009 in a very short time period, and at this time I have the impression that it is 2009 which is giving the most right now, 2004 was probably better but is starting to show its age!

The wine seems to have evolved very rapidly compared to the bottle I had in 2006. It started to dissociate rather quickly and the fruit layer was very faint. Somewhat disappointed compared to the emotion I felt with the first bottle, which to me had a perfect balance. No point in waiting if the bottle is already giving you pleasure, further improval with age will at best be only marginal and you risk catching the next bottle on its way down....

8/15/13, 1:05 AM - Hi. You're correct, I use the rating scale in a personal way so that 92 corresponds to a good wine, but nothing more than that. In my note, I wanted to express the disappointment I felt compared to the emotion I had a few years back with the same wine. The wine, far from getting better as Baroli are supposed to, had actually started it's descent. So in that sense a 92 for me would probably score lower for you :-) That's why it is (more) important to read the accompanying note!

Martin Weiner Clos Vougeot Dinner: Leroy, Anne Gros, Méo-Camuzet (Martin Weiner's home in Westwood, Los Angeles, California): Slightly bricking medium red color with pale meniscus; baking spice, red bean, baked red fruit nose; very tight, tart red fruit, baking spice palate; medium finish

11/2/11, 1:41 AM - Great tasting and great posts! As you mentionned 2003 was a very dry year and HN parcel lies at the top of the hill. The bottom of the hill, which usually accumulates humidity in a regular year, was for once privileged in 2003 (as exemplified by your note on Leroy's 2003 which was on par with other vintages).

This wine is ready to drink and it's not a blockbuster. Don't save it.

10/1/11, 9:55 AM - Saw your note and your previous one on the same wine from Feb 2011. What happened for the wine to crash in a so short amount of time? Didn't it stand the comparison to the other wines you had on the same occasion? Thanks for any additional information!

Purple royal full-bodied and beautifully balanced - a great mid palate with rich and luscious fruit, sweet tannin, and Smucker's black current make this North Carolina toasty tobacco, multi-dimensional marvel much better than many give it credit for. A finish to dream about.

1/9/11, 4:58 AM - Thanks for nice note. I have one of those waiting to be drunken, but was inclined to think it might be too early. From your note it doesn't seem to be the case, so I was wondering if the wine had been decanted and for how long?

Just received 6 of these today so it's probably not fair to open one yet, but I did anyway. This is a deep, dark, brooding pinot. Tannic & somewhat singular frame to it with sweet fruit. Not much on the nose (my thing) & the palate seemed a bit washed out. Picked up a lot of earthy oaky characteristicsCan't make sense of it, but it does seem to have the stuffing & hope it improves once it settles out & has time to rest.

11/11/10, 5:16 AM - Thanks for the note, I have three of these waiting but given your evaluation and the fact that Gouges wine take a notoriously long time to settle (although I heard it is not so true nowadays as it used to be a couple of years ago) and show some of their charm, I think I'll leave mine to rest for some years... Drink well!

I can't find my notes on this wine, but it was a beuty with dense sappy cherrie fruit and a long finish. Has improved remarkebly.

5/10/10, 3:05 AM - I am with you here, the bottle I last drank in September 2009 was gorgeous and had no resemblance whatsoever with the previous one I drank in April 2008.
