11/27/23, 2:32 AM - Definitely yes, the nose was evoking a typical Cabernet Franc-driven, left-bank Bordeaux wine. Not very spectacular and not as one could maybe expect. Right-bank Merlot lushness could only be detected in the palate, but with no extravaganza. As I'm sure you know, VCC is atypical in the sense that it has a very high proportion of CF (30-40% if I remember correctly), something which was very apparent in this bottle.
9/15/19, 11:10 AM - Hi Mark and thanks for the feedback. To be honest I was not expecting too much of that bottle and was about to give up on La Mission HB altogether: I had previously been left non-plussed by 1988 (twice) but also by 2001 which I had had at ten years of age (so the same mileage that this 2008 bottle now). I am glad I finally got a chance to revise my opinion, but I also think you have a point when you say that great wines should be great at several time points of their evolution, and not only after many decades. From now on I will drink my Bordeaux younger!
9/17/19, 7:44 AM - I can certainly drink to that. Cheers!
1/28/19, 12:57 AM - Hi, the wine was popped 'n poured, so no special preparation. The wine was delivering right after opening. I was fortunate to taste Rancia 2004, 2006 and 2009 in a very short time period, and at this time I have the impression that it is 2009 which is giving the most right now, 2004 was probably better but is starting to show its age!
8/15/13, 1:05 AM - Hi. You're correct, I use the rating scale in a personal way so that 92 corresponds to a good wine, but nothing more than that. In my note, I wanted to express the disappointment I felt compared to the emotion I had a few years back with the same wine. The wine, far from getting better as Baroli are supposed to, had actually started it's descent. So in that sense a 92 for me would probably score lower for you :-) That's why it is (more) important to read the accompanying note!
11/2/11, 1:41 AM - Great tasting and great posts! As you mentionned 2003 was a very dry year and HN parcel lies at the top of the hill. The bottom of the hill, which usually accumulates humidity in a regular year, was for once privileged in 2003 (as exemplified by your note on Leroy's 2003 which was on par with other vintages).
10/1/11, 9:55 AM - Saw your note and your previous one on the same wine from Feb 2011. What happened for the wine to crash in a so short amount of time? Didn't it stand the comparison to the other wines you had on the same occasion? Thanks for any additional information!
1/9/11, 4:58 AM - Thanks for nice note. I have one of those waiting to be drunken, but was inclined to think it might be too early. From your note it doesn't seem to be the case, so I was wondering if the wine had been decanted and for how long?
11/11/10, 5:16 AM - Thanks for the note, I have three of these waiting but given your evaluation and the fact that Gouges wine take a notoriously long time to settle (although I heard it is not so true nowadays as it used to be a couple of years ago) and show some of their charm, I think I'll leave mine to rest for some years... Drink well!
5/10/10, 3:05 AM - I am with you here, the bottle I last drank in September 2009 was gorgeous and had no resemblance whatsoever with the previous one I drank in April 2008.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
