Purchased at Total Wine for 50, then brought to Colicchio's Craftsteak @ MGM w/ 50 corkage. Quick decant & pour, since we'd prefunc'd with screwdrivers in the room. Nice.. but with any Sorella from the last decade.. I expect way more. Paired fine, if not immemorably, with our Wagyu split. Perhaps too young?
  • Donnyhead commented:

9/13/17, 9:51 AM - Yes, I agree with you. It's a bit young. Was just at the Andrew Will release party and the 2012 sure compared favorably to the 2014 Sorella. As they said, 2012 was the last of the "cold year" Sorellas, so I think this one could benefit from a few more years (3-5). IMHO

Tre Bicchieri (San Francisco): Tasted right after the Schiavenza Barolo. This is a classically “pretty" Barbaresco. Red cherry, hints of incense, sandalwood. A bit of oak baking spices (partly oak casks, partly barriques). Tannins are a bit less than Barolo - still high tannins, though. Score: Around 8.5. Well-done, but a bit primary for me.
  • Donnyhead commented:

4/10/17, 7:12 AM - I see you gave it a lower score (85). Do you think part of that may have been that you tasted it after a barolo? I mean, it's hard to beat a good barolo!

2008 Leonetti Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley
Pop and pour. Big wine. Rich, forward. Very prominent blue fruits, purple fruits, vanillin oak plentiful, touch heat.

Touch bitter on finish.

Fruit profile Reminds me of QC but without the finesse.

Dumped last glass. Open 5 hours. Overall, disappointing for the price and reputation. Just too clunky and one dimensional.

9/18/15, 12:08 PM - I've been finding other wines that are better tasting and priced than Leonetti (eg Dunhams). But the reputation carries them on.

much better than the '06 Napa Valley. More fruit forward and rounder bodied. I would drink sooner rather than later.
  • Donnyhead commented:

9/18/15, 12:04 PM - I have held blind tastings if the Silver Oak Alexander and Napa Valley wines. The Alexander Valley wins.

High alcohol on the nose, kind of hard to get through. but after some time, we got some fresh cedar, sage, dried loganberry, moss and kalamata olive, watermelon jolly rancher. On the palate, vanilla, oak, buttery honey and a medium tannin. Still very young, would wait a least another year.
  • Donnyhead commented:

8/6/15, 9:23 AM - Thanks for the comment. I just purchased 3 bottles and based on this I think I'll keep it in the cellar for a while. Interesting that it got 94 points by Robert Parker.

8/7/15, 10:29 AM - Well, I'm on the mailing list of Impulse Wine of Seattle. Been on it for a while but had never purchased anything. I got an email that they had a few bottles of the 2012 Quilceda Creek CVR available, so I made my first purchase from them with an order for 3 bottles. You could check with them on-line and see if they still have some. I got the email just a day or two ago.

Tasted at release. beautifully dark, nose of dark fruits, medium to full body, lots of tannins, moderately complex, some savory notes, long finish. This one will last for years. Beautiful merlot.
  • Donnyhead commented:

5/6/15, 9:08 AM - I'm starting to feel that Leonetti a bit over-priced for the quality of the wine. I'm finding I like some other wines better that cost much less. That's not to say Leonetti is a bad wine, it's not. I like it. But with the cabs at $95-$96 per bottle, it's getting pricey. What are your thoughts on value for the money?

  • Donnyhead commented:

6/16/15, 12:32 PM - I think that's true. The challenge is finding the good ones before they become cult wines.
