The stunning 2013 Hawke's Bay vintage is evident here; deeply concentrated, luscious, ripe yet not jammy. A wonderfully floral nose with violets and lavender, mint and rosemary. Palate rich with complex layers of dark fleshy plums, berries and blackcurrant, solid tannin structure, with a long finish of coffee and chocolate. Still young, tannins still tight, even the next day; little tertiary character yet. Revisit 2020+

I did a Coravin sample they day before and then opened the bottle and thought it was mediocre at best. A bit thin and drying for my taste.
  • F1NUT commented:

9/10/18, 5:52 AM - I wonder if something was wrong with your bottle. Its definitely not Napa Cabernet richness but its not drying for me. Wonder if you get the chance try it again now. If you still don't like it - we must respect each others' palates and preferences. For me its rather Bordeaux without the barnyard forest floor and very much the better for it.

Decanted for couple of hours. Still fruit. Not past it at all. Probably near it's best for it's age. Still have 1990 in cellar. Has anyone had one recently? Cork had been touched but not very far. Thanks

2006 Winslow Turakirae Marlborough Red Bordeaux Blend
This wine has become my benchmark for all other top quality wines. Great nose and palate. Who would have thought Marlborough grapes could produce a world class Bordeaux. If only they made more.
  • F1NUT commented:

6/4/17, 12:32 AM - I believe Winslows is (was?) a Martinborough winery so its Martinborough fruit I think. The comment is still valid as Cabernet and friends not commonly planted there either. Turakirae was however their flagship very special red.

6/5/17, 3:48 PM - Hi Nathan. I located a bottle in my cellar and you are absolutely right about the fruit from Marlborough! I've enjoyed Turakirae 1996, 1998, 2001 and lastly 2006 vintage 2 bottles not yet tasted! However I did have a 1997 Nautilus Cab-Mer (also no longer made) a couple of weeks ago and it was awesome. Yes, maybe they should be trying the Bordeaux varieties again in Marlborough!

- view: cherry red and small evolution in colour
- nose: little intensity. Hints of coffee and leather. There was also a certain "stink" in it, but this went away after some time.
- palate: soft start in the mouth. Hints of wood, leather and mushrooms.
Quite soft and juicy in the mouth.

This wine needs some time to open up, but is too old to my personal taste.

3/26/17, 2:39 AM - Despite the price of this wine, the drinking experience is sometimes not what one would want. Depending on one's own palate of course, my experience with this wine is lack of fruit and its not on my buy list.

{cork, 13.5%} Despite its immaculate appearance, I'm a bit dirty on this cork. The wine has a terminally musty quality I just can't get past. But is it the cork's fault? I don't know. There are aged aromas of mulberry/ripe fruit, subtle and restrained. Mild dusty tannin, moderate acid. But the wet carpet character is also strong. Admittedly, it doesn't have the rank cardboard of full-blown TCA, but the mouldy character never goes away. The finish is just too anonymous - and mushroom-tasting - to be convincing. Also, although the texture seems to persist on the medium-weight palate, it seems to be all tactile characters, and very little actual flavour. A perplexing wine (of unknown provenance) which needs to be opened alongside some sibllings to be sure. I still think - drink - on this evidence.
  • F1NUT commented:

3/26/17, 2:38 AM - It was probably corked. I've had one which was magnificent and one which was "dull" to say the least. Corks, bah - curse of the cellared wine. A way to tell is open another bottle (I bought 6). 2 out of 3 ok. One was pitiful and got poured down the sink. C'est la vie. I'm prepared for a failure in the remainder.

Opened three hours in advance, horse stable, spicy, but with more time a musty smell, obviously corked!

This is a pretty and well made wine. Balanced, decent structure, but for the money and reputation I expected either (a) some tannin structure OR (b) weight of fruit OR (c) complexity OR (d) crazy aromatics. This had none of the above. Slightly bewildered and underwhelmed.
  • F1NUT commented:

6/19/16, 4:23 AM - Mount Mary Quintet is often an elegant wine in the extreme. You have to examine balance and imagine the wine in 20 years time. 2010 is rated very highly by critics and I agree with them but its anything but a weighty Robert Parker wine. You will however guaranteed enjoy this wine in 15-20 years due to the cellaring potential. It will never be a "big" wine but it will take on bottle maturity gracefully. You could even come back in 40 years and it will be enjoyable for the elegance and balance.

Dinner with a several friends from uni. Decided to try this wine out since the price is quite good. Well this nose is simply brilliant, chocolate, dark fruits and some oaks in the background. Palate is wonderful, medium bodied with tannins is fully integrated with the fruits with hint of chocolate and oak, finished is reasonablely good but I guess the only thing I can fault is the food and the wine did not go well.
  • F1NUT commented:

5/29/16, 3:09 AM - Its not worth commenting the food didn't go well, unless you say what food to avoid with this wine!

  • F1NUT commented:

5/29/16, 3:06 AM - That is alright! I love Supertuscanere and Tignanello not disappoint . Lovely nose of mainly cherry and a little black currant . Then a little dust, wet forest floor , cedar , licorice and dark chocolate and finally a sharp but finely balanced, touch of slightly burnt oak and Tahiti vanilla. In the mouth the wine is full and nice round with well-integrated tannins. The taste is dominated by red berries , dark chocolate and vanilla and perfectly controlled acid that keeps the wine beautifully together . Can easily keep +5 years.

Pulled this out -- theoretically a few years or ten years too early -- but some fatty pork paté was left on the table, and we were still enjoying each other's wild confabulations, and well, one thing led to another. Grapes of Wrath's notes are spot-on: burnt sugar, dried apricot, hint of zest. Great viscosity. I didn't get much in the way of limestone/minerality. This has 5-10 years left. Fantastic QPR -- guests were delighted/wowed.
  • F1NUT commented:

2/10/16, 3:50 AM - In early 2016 the wine is tasting more pineapple than apricot, but plenty of wild honey and some citrus and the acidity persists to clean the palate. The botrytis is prominent and this will preserve the wine for decades. Its sensational at this point and I hope to enjoy my dozen over the next 20+ years.

Among the dullest Sauternes I have tasted; thin, sharp alcohol, and somewhat disjointed overall. It tasted like a cheap, sweet wine. In a word, placeless. It wasn't flawed, and it is young, but unimpressive given the vintage. Time should help, at least a little. Pass.
  • F1NUT commented:

2/10/16, 3:46 AM - Really sorry for your experience and I think you must have had a bad bottle. 2011 to 2015 tasting not particularly young so the thin-ness indicates indicates the lack of the viscosity we see in the good bottles. Would encourage you to buy again as the rest of the reviews indicate its rather good.

Light yellow. Slightly sweet, fresh pineapple, lots of apricot, good acidity, still very young and fresh fruit oriented at this time. Good now, likely better later
  • F1NUT commented:

2/10/16, 3:40 AM - Think its more than slightly sweet but this may be the significant botrytis influence at this time. Agree the pineapple but not so much the apricot unless you are thinking syrup canned apricots. Certainly agree the acidity and this is what will carry this wine for a couple of decades together with the botrytis. Cellar this wine, you will not be disappointed.

This is excellent. There is lovely viscosity and richness to this typical Sauternes. Its deceptive. Yes it is sweet but also has the botrytis influence and for my palate has just enough acidity to clean the palate with a nice length of nice flavours. I think it is easy to dismiss this wine at this price but I think it it a truly great vintage, for what is supposed to be declassified Rieussec itself - a bargain then. It is reportedly 13.5% so excellent balance. Aside from the beautiful and typical Sauternes palate, this has a touch of orange, so if you like orange marmalade this is great. For a second wine this is superb, obviously a great year. I adore it as its very impressive drinking now but should also cellar 10 years. Try it!
  • F1NUT commented:

12/23/15, 2:29 AM - ...and by the way, a couple of bottles I've tried have clear crystals in the bottle and this indicates supersaturated sugars. So for 13.5% alc I think this wine is some achievement and congratulate Rieussec for this vintage of their second tier wine. I have not any of 09 Rieussec - should be wonderful stuff on this basis!

1998 Aussie Showdown dinner (Jade Palace Restaurant): Open before dinner for bottle breath and serve as 2nd wine for the night.
Dark ruby with glossy crimson hue, open up nicely for tasting with lots of minty character on the nose along with blackcurrant and cedar oak.
It has robust but smooth palate contributed by its age, with cassis, minty eucalyptus and hints of oak and earthiness. Layers fruits and seamless mid-palate extend into a long lingering finish with fine tannins.
Showing very well for the night and the group preferred this to Domain A. A Margaret River victory for this flight!
  • F1NUT commented:

6/21/15, 8:47 PM - Only had Domaine A twice. High reputation but I found it not completely ripe and not fruity and a bit one-dimensional. Voyager far more enjoyable.
