Now here we go! I've had like 5 bottles of this and they've been getting better each time. Not sure why the variation but this last one was delicious. Nose of blueberry, blackberry, chocolate covered raspberry and minerals. Fresh and really nice. I think the first bottle I has was either off or in a dumb phase.

8/1/17, 6:35 PM - I think the wine will definitely improve in the months and years to come. I found that it steadily improved over the past few months after initially letting me down and I really liked the last two bottles I had. If you can hang onto them for sometime. Unfortunately that was the last of mine. Going to sit on the rest of the single vintage stuff for sure!

Weird nose, iron like with minimal fruit. Very strange for myriad..bad bottle?
  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

4/30/17, 6:04 PM - I'm going to wait and try another one first. It didn't taste corked or madeirized, just had this strange iron taste and was very thin, almost no fruit. Not at all like the past myriad's I've enjoyed. Maybe in a dumb phase?

Christmas dinner so no formal note but the wine is a silky almost black in the decanter. Super smooth on the palate and so drinkable. Black and blue fruit with subtle tannins and acid. Drinking great now. Definitely a buy again wine.
  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

1/4/17, 4:45 PM - Unfortunately I have not, this was the first vintage I bought.

Dark purple robe, after a 3 hour decant there is a nose of delicate black and blue fruit. Mouthfeel is very smooth with balanced tannin and acid. Enjoyable but I can think of several wines of equal quality for half the price.
  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

11/30/16, 5:40 PM - With a couple hour decant I get a similar vibe from the '12,'13 hilary goldschmidt charming creek cab for ~$30 a bottle.

A little disappointed after loving the Estate version. Beautiful blackberry/currant nose on opening. Made the mistake of slow oxing for an hour and first sip tasted like a syrah- smoke, plum....no thanks, love Syrah but hate smokey Cabs. Decanted right away and the smoke blew off within 5 minutes. Afterward cherries, blackberry, currant, but also some stewed prunes. Was going to give this an 89 but with time cassis and vanilla is emerging and its getting smoother in the decanter. Must say, I don't understand people who slow ox, I feel like wine either needs to be decanted or drank from the bottle. Physics doesn't support slow ox working, surface area is too small to make a difference in less than 24 hours.

Final judgement, not worth the money, if you've got ~$80 to spend do it elsewhere. This would be palatable at $40. I will try to review a few more in this price range over the next couple weeks.

7/14/16, 9:01 PM - I decanted for a couple hours after the experiment, it just wasn't very good. Funny thing is I actually saw this on sale for $45 recently, didn't buy.

Opaque purple almost black robe, dark ruby/purple at rim, big legs. Nose of black and blue fruits, warm oak, vanilla, baking spices. Sweet black and blue fruits on the palate with a hint of thyme. Even after a 4+ hour decant the tannins are still there. This will gain a couple points when it matures fully. I bought this on a rec from wine store and I am impressed. It reminds me of Lewis Cellars cab and of course Venge.

4/1/16, 8:34 AM - Hey CSimm- I loved this wine and if you like Lewis/Venge wines you would definitely enjoy it. I agree with parker on this one for sure. I dont generally put much stock in WS or Vinous ratings. They over rate a lot of wines I hate and under rate some really good stuff. My LWS also has a BTK Janzen which I've gotta try soon!

  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

5/14/16, 9:22 PM - Glad you liked it, try the BTK, its very good.

4 hour double decant, more at restaurant. A huuuuge wine, black and blue fruite, big baking spice. Absolutely delicious.
  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

5/9/16, 11:38 AM - It will definitely improve with age, it was a massive wine compared to the much more delicate Lafite and Paul Hobbs. With a 4 hour decant it was really showing well though so I wouldn't hesitate to try some now.

Deep opaque purple robe. Nose of black cherry, blackberry, cassis, black fruit liqueur and cherry cola. A rich and extracted wine but also possessing a smooth minerality and quickly fading tannins.

Enjoyable, should be a solid 94 with a little more time for integration.

ETA: I decanted this for ~30 minutes and drank over 2 hours. I would recommend a 2+ hour decant at this stage.

Smokey and sweet, very powerful, rich. Named after Mom. Mom stopped the company going bankrupt 6 times so my brother and I wanted to do something special unique to honor her and here it is.

The best blocks from below the best of the best.

Needs more time. Ripe cherry, blueberry, oak. A bit acidic and overly sweet on the finish. Not really coming together despite a long decant. Disappointing for $70, would try again in 5-10 years.
  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

8/3/15, 9:53 PM - Thats what I paid, is it more expensive? If it is don't waste your money. I have the luxury of having a local wine shop with a large selection of very fine wines and a bunch of rubes running the registers. They also don't have the non barcoded wines in the POS system so its not uncommon to save $50 or $100 on a $200 bottle because the clerk just rings it up as a much cheaper bottle. They had recent vintage lafite out the door for $400 not long ago.

  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

8/4/15, 6:59 AM - Yup it was wax dipped. Maybe I'll pick another up to lay down and try again with some age.

Unbelievable bottle of Shiraz! Very smooth almost Grange like in body, but very vibrant and lively. Tons of fruit on the nose and in the mouth. Tannins are very present , but not overwhelming. The finish was very long and lingering. This was a fantastic bottle of wine! Lot sof years ahead with this vintage.
  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

7/31/15, 9:05 PM - I think you are mistaken, hundred acre is a cabernet?

  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

8/3/15, 9:44 PM - Will take your word for it, have not seen the Hundred Acre Shiraz.

Dark purple body. Nose of Blackberry, currant, pepper, smoke and meat. Smooth after a 1hr decant.

Last bottle of a case I ordered in 2012. Spent its entire life in my overflow rack, so the temperature swings may have accelerated it its maturation. If I knew then what I know now it would have been in the cellar. Wish I had more, this was very enjoyable and much more complex than I remember it.

Thin body, brick colored. Fresh red fruit, quite acidic and a bit astringent at the moment. Only bought one to test, if I had more I would cellar for 5 yrs minimum before trying again.
  • Shaun Mondavi commented:

6/3/15, 7:55 PM - Dude grow up, its wine, don't take it so seriously. Your first post was a 7.99 Costco wine that you said should be consumed in the first two years. Pot meet kettle?
