This 2016 SSS is turning out nicely. Complex nose of strawberry, cherry, raspberry and gravel. Rich fruit on the palate balanced with almost austere minerality and acidity. Long finish. Love where this wine is rn.

Classic Stony Hill, all about the pure natural fruit. Nose of apricot, honey and gravel. Crisp delicate fruit flavors with a backbone of minerality and firm acidity. Medium finish with nice complexity in the resolution.

This bottle was pretty good, but might be a bit past its prime. Nice garnet color with a hint of brick. A nominal amount of sediment in the bottle shoulder. Spice, minerality, graphite and straw on the nose. Plenty of red fruit - strawberry, sour cherry, tart currant - caramelized sugar with somewhat sharp and not too pleasant acidity. Long finish, sweet but also some bitterness.

Pulled from the eurocave not sure what to expect given its age. Cork slid out easily, had a bit of crystallization but not a lot of sediment in the neck. Good color, fresh and young looking. Nose of red fruit with a lot of oak, not a lot of subtlety here.
Palate of sour cherry, red currant, oak and some alcoholic heat. Medium finish with some nice complexity. Overall a decent bottle but far from stellar. Drink up.

Deep inky purple with nose of ripe blackberry and cedar. Full fruit with notes of black currant, syrupy feel and plenty firm tannins. Nothing like the previous bottle, which had that strange mineral thing going on. No need to rush, should be going strong in 2029.

Another off-the-beaten-track blend from Mark Herold that delivers a big dose of tasty fruit, some nice complexity, and stands up to bold dishes like brisket and ribs. Recommended.

Opened and slow ox for 2 hours before tasting. Deep ruby-black in the glass. Complex nose of fruit, earth, leather. Huge, dense, flavorful in the mouth. Black fruit, chocolate, cigar box, seared meat. Initially seemed incredibly smooth, but firm tannins emerged a bit later in the evening. This was a fine year in the Medoc, and the wine has years of improvement ahead of it.

Opened and slow ox for 2 hours. Lots of crystallized sediment on the cork. Deep ruby-purple color. Tobacco and leather in the nose, alongside blackberry and cherry. Very balanced black fruit, currant, spice, touch of gravel. Moderate tannins. Long finish. A good wine from an ok vintage, nice but not stellar. Probably best in the next 5 years.

Loved this single-section Pinot from the fertile lower section of the Confluence vineyard. Rich purple fruit, excellent balance of acidity, long finish. Very good as a stand alone wine, and interesting to see the deconstructed components of the full Confluence bottling.

Deep matte purple color, with just a hint of garnet at the edge. Huge nose of black fruits, vanilla, earth and oak. Nice balance of acidity offsetting the softness of the merlot grapes. Very nice flavors, with a moderately long finish.

Very nice color and a lush nose of tobacco, leather and red fruit. Firm acidity and nicely balanced fruit on the palate at first, but giving way to a smooth and somewhat thin midsection. Medium long finish. A good wine, but not a great one.

So good -- slow-ox and settled for 3+ hours, observed ongoing emergence of earthy leather aromas to complement bright fruit notes. Good level of acidity, plenty of complexity. Maybe not completely integrated at this point, not sure if it is in the process of coming together or unraveling. Nonetheless a delightful wine.

Much has already been said about the '86 HB, but today's bottle was flawless. Slow-ox and settled for 2 hours, then poured from the bottle. Claret-colored, not too dark, no sign of bricking. Classic rich earthy leather and tobacco nose with a hint of eucalyptus and understated red fruits. First impact on the palate is smoky dark fruit, earth and stone, resolving to almost a madeira-like sweetness. Smooth and round, but with some tannic structure yet to go. We had a superb 1998 Spottswoode as well, but the HB overshadowed in every dimension.

Classic Husic cab: deep purple-black color; somewhat closed nose of black fruits and wet stone; big fruit-forward taste with strong notes of blackberry, cherry and oak, with an almost syrupy feel; firm acidity and a long finish of honey with a hint of cocoa. High alcohol, not a lot of restraint on display here, but count me as a fan.

The wine was kind of out of balance today, a moderate note of bitterness among the usual restrained fruit and earth flavors. I don't think the bottle was spoiled; hopefully it's 'just a phase'.

Mild sediment deposit on cork. Slight brick color on first pour. Closed off nose initially, but opened some after air, still austere and with graphite aroma. Color returned to claret purple after an hour or so. Lush black fruit with much structure and firm tannins. Caramel and pepper notes over river stones. Long lingering finish. Very nice, has many good years ahead.

First experience with Dom. De la Cote. Lovely color. Restrained nose of red fruit, spice and earthy vegetation belies what comes next: an explosion of complex flavors. Red currant, cherry, vanilla, spices, astringent tannins and an undercurrent of minerality. Really delicious, did not expect so much complexity and refined power.

This wine is deep inky purple red in the glass. Highly aromatic nose of red currant, gravel and eucalyptus. Big fruit bomb of cherry, currant and cassis, hints of dark chocolate, overlaid on a bed of minerality and firm tannic structure. Long finish, resolving to mild sweetness. Overall a bit rough and tumble, needs some time to find balance and integration.

Delicious magnum! This bottle was in great shape with plenty of life. Deep ruby color with no sign of bricking. A fair amount of sediment, but we poured direct from the bottle regardless. Nose was reserved at first, but opened up into a gentle but complex mix of dark fruits, evergreen and minerality. Blackberries, vanilla, cedar and earth on the palate, with well-seasoned tannins. Lovely.

Pretty purple in the glass. Spicy, earthy nose of currants and cherries. Ripe blackberry, gooseberry, cherry and a good dose of gravelly notes, held in a structure of fat tannins with moderate acidity. Nice finish, very harmonious. This wine is young, I'd say wait a few more years for it to really settle into itself.

This old soldier is inky purple in the glass with garnet at the edges. Reserved nose of blackberry, forest, chocolate and wet stones. On the palate it is soft cherry, blackberry and caramel with a backbone of minerality. Tannins definitely rounded but still have a bite. Feels a bit past its peak, a bit off balance but still very enjoyable. Long finish. Compared to the '99 Silver Oak Napa we had recently, this is more Bordeaux style than California, but less well put together.

Deep, clear ruby color with no sign of bricking. Nose a bit closed at first, but opened over the evening. Delicious fruit and forest, with rounded but still well-structured tannins. Moderate finish. Cork was a bit delicate but showed no sign of leakage. This 18 year old has plenty of staying power, drink now or hold.

Another delicious fruit bomb from Mr. Herold. Tempranillo 66% and Grenache 34%, not your average California blend. Lush strawberry, cherry and blackberry jam flavors, bold and firm with a nice balance. A great wine for hearty, saucy dishes.

Very interesting wine, 100% Tempranillo. Deep ruby red in the glass, with a very fragrant nose of predominant red fruit and a touch of gravel. Lush full fruit flavors, bright and spicy, surprisingly complex for a pure varietal. Enjoyable by itself and an excellent pairing with italian comfort food.

This bottle was in a strange place. A seeming wall of minerality stood between the palate and the wine; ripe lush black fruit typical of Husic flowed around the edges of the stony block, complemented with firm, structured tannins. Clearly this was not a spoiled bottle. But the dominant note was that curious stony mineral. No integration of flavors after 3 hours. The following day it had moderated somewhat, so I suspect this is just an odd phase in the wine's development.

Dark ruby purple in the glass, with a nose of earth, tobacco, red fruit and black pepper. Smooth attack with ripe red and black berries, some wood, spice and a touch of gravel. Well-balanced acidity. Less complex than the blended Gowan Creek bottling, but a very nice wine from a somewhat difficult vintage.

On opening, this bottle showed interesting potential behind a solid wall of youthful acidity. Ruby red in the glass, nose light and sharp with red fruit. Red currant, cherries, strawberries and gravel, plus the aforementioned strong acidity. After a day, the acid had mellowed revealing a richly textured and well-balanced pinot with prominent fruit, suggestive of good things to come for those who wait for this one.

A very nice Cali cab from an excellent vintage. Bright ruby-violet color, uniform to the rim. Aromatic nose of black cherry, tobacco, vanilla and a hint of pencil lead. Firm tannins with bright acidity are balanced by lush fruity blackberry, raspberry and cassis alongside minor notes of strawberry, bell pepper and stone, followed by a long finish of honey and raspberry. This wine has miles to go before it sleeps, check back in 5-10 years.

Bottle was properly stored, but at this point seemed past its prime. Color was deep purple red, no sign of bricking. Lots of sediment in the bottle. Soft nose of red & black fruit. On tasting, acidity overpowered the much-softened fruit and wood notes. The second day, some balance had returned and the wine was reasonably pleasant but unremarkable. If you have it, drink it up.

Deep purple color. Dark fruit and wood dominate the fragrant nose. On the palate the wine is lush, full-bodied and fruit-forward with strong but integrated notes of blackberries, cherries, cedar, cassis and chocolate. Medium-long finish as the flavors unfurl and dissipate. Plenty of structure to support continued development for at least 10 more years.

Transparent ruby in the glass. Earthy, tobacco-y nose. Young tannins, subtle fruit, black cherries and plums, hint of pepper and minerality, promising complexity that will hopefully continue to develop over the next few years. Nice wine.
